Chapter 2 The Alpha’s Predatory Claim
The lock clicked into place, and the sound echoed through the room like a death knell.
Aria sat frozen on the edge of the bed. Her fingers were still wrapped tightly around the handle of her silver dagger. The weapon felt heavy now, almost like it was judging her for hesitating. Just an hour ago, everything was simple: find the Alpha, kill him, and save her brother. It was basic math. But now, that pulsing bond anchored deep in her chest had blurred the numbers. She couldn't see the answer anymore.
She looked around the room, trying to get her breathing under control. The space was exactly what she expected from a man like Cassian Darkridge. The walls were made of dark stone and cedar, built to last. The furniture was massive, clearly meant for a man who took up space by right. In the corner, a fire roared, casting long shadows that danced across the floor. It was a beautiful room, but it felt like a gilded cage.
Aria slid the dagger back into her boot, her movements careful and quiet. She didn't have much time. She stood up, her legs still a bit shaky from being near him, and started pacing. She needed an escape route or a way to talk to the Syndicate. Her fingers brushed against the small, flat transmitter hidden in her boot lining.
Buzz. Buzz.
The device vibrated against her skin.
She pulled it out, her heart sinking as red text lit up the tiny screen: Status? Target in range. Confirm kill.
Aria swallowed hard. The Syndicate didn’t care about "fated mates" or ancient laws. To them, Cassian was just a target, and she was just a blade. If she didn’t answer soon, they would think she had turned on them, and her brother Leo would be the one to pay for it.
Her thumb hovered over the screen, frozen.
Before she could type a word, the door creaked open. Aria shoved the device back into her boot just as Cassian walked in.
He wasn't carrying a weapon. Instead, he had a tray with steaming bowls of soup and fresh bread. Seeing a predator perform such a normal, human task was more terrifying than seeing him bare his teeth.
"The healer is busy with a birth in the village," Cassian said. His voice was deep and smooth, making her skin prickle. "He’ll be here in an hour. Until then, you need to eat."
He set the tray on a small table and gestured for her to sit. Aria didn't move. She watched him like a cornered animal, measuring the distance between them.
"I’m not hungry," she said quietly.
Cassian’s eyes darkened, the gold in them turning bright and intense. He took a single step toward her. Aria backed away instantly until her shoulders hit the cold stone wall. In a heartbeat, he was there. He leaned in, his arms braced against the wall on either side of her, locking her in place.
The smell of sandalwood and rain wrapped around her. It was intoxicating. Her own wolf stirred inside her, wanting to lean in and touch him.
"You’re lying, Aria," he rumbled. He was so close she could see the dark rings around his pupils. "I can hear your heart. It’s drumming like a frightened bird. Why are you so scared of me?"
She forced herself to look him in the eye. "You’re a stranger," she whispered. "A powerful Alpha who dragged a girl into his bedroom. Why wouldn't I be afraid?"
Cassian moved even closer. His chest brushed against hers, and the heat of it sent a spark through her body that she couldn't hide. He dipped his head, his nose grazing the sensitive skin of her neck as he took a long, slow breath.
A small, soft sound escaped her throat before she could stop it.
"You don't smell afraid," he murmured against her skin. "You smell... awake."
His voice dropped to a rough growl. "Like you want me to touch you just as much as I want to mark you."
Aria reached up to push him away, but the moment her hands hit his warm chest, her fingers betrayed her. Instead of pushing, she gripped his shirt. His skin felt like velvet over solid rock.
"We’re mates," he whispered, his lips tracing her jawline. "You feel it."
"It doesn't matter," she gasped, trying to find her focus. "We can't do this."
Cassian pulled back slightly, searching her face. His expression shifted from hunger to something that looked almost like hurt. "Why?" he demanded. "Is there someone else? A lover back with the rogues?"
The jealousy in his tone was sharp. Aria saw an opening and took it. "What if there is?"
A primal sound tore from his throat. He grabbed her waist, lifted her easily, and tossed her onto the bed. He followed her down, pinning her with his weight.
"There is no one else," he growled. "Not anymore. The moment I found you in the snow, your past ended. You belong to me now. My pack. My mate. My Luna."
He kissed her then—not a question, but a claim. Fire raced through her veins. Her mind told her to reach for the blade in her boot, but her body responded with a hunger of its own. For one second, the mission and her brother didn't exist. There was only him.
Cassian eventually pulled back, his breathing ragged.
"Eat the soup," he said, his voice husky. "I have a border dispute to handle. But when I get back, we’re going to talk about why a 'refugee' moves like a professional killer."
He stood up and walked out, the lock clicking behind him once more.
Aria slumped against the pillows, trembling. She pulled out the transmitter with shaking hands and typed: Target suspicious. Mate bond confirmed. Need more time.
The reply was instant: Two days. Blood Moon deadline. Choose a side, Shadow.
Aria looked at the silver dagger on the floor. She was running out of time, and she was running out of lies.
