Chapter 63 Pretender
Derek Blackwood's release from federal custody came with conditions—house arrest, monitored communications, forfeiture of all territorial claims.
"He cooperated extensively," the federal prosecutor explained to Kai. "Testimony helped convict Darius's entire network."
"So he walks free after trying to help murder Elara," Kai said.
"He serves five years house arrest and permanent loss of pack authority," the prosecutor said. "That's the deal."
Derek appeared at the estate gates two days after release.
"I need to speak with Elara," he told security.
"Absolutely not," the guard said.
"It's important," Derek insisted. "About threats she doesn't know about yet."
The guard called up to the house and Kai came down personally.
"You have nerve showing up here," Kai said.
"I have information you need," Derek said. "Five minutes, that's all I ask."
Kai considered then agreed, bringing Derek inside under guard supervision.
Elara entered the meeting room looking wary. "What do you want?"
"To warn you," Derek said. "Viktor wasn't working alone."
"We know about his consortium," Elara said.
"Not that," Derek said. "There's someone else, someone who's been orchestrating everything—Darius, Mandivus, Viktor, all of it."
"Who?" Kai demanded.
"I don't know their name," Derek admitted. "But Darius mentioned them once, called them 'the Architect.'"
"That's not helpful," Elara said.
"They're planning something bigger," Derek said. "Viktor's attack was supposed to be final solution but since it failed, they're regrouping."
"Why tell us this?" Kai asked suspiciously.
"Because I'm tired of being a pawn," Derek said. "And because watching people die for someone else's greed got old."
"Conscience is convenient now that you're caught," Elara said.
"Maybe," Derek agreed. "But the information is real."
"How do we find this Architect?" Kai asked.
"Start with Viktor's files," Derek suggested. "Federal seizure captured his communications, somewhere in there is evidence of who he reported to."
After Derek left, Elara and Kai contacted federal authorities about accessing Viktor's records.
"We'll need warrants," the agent said. "But given Derek's tip, we can justify expedited review."
Three days later they received partial files showing Viktor communicated with someone using encrypted channels.
"Can you decrypt these?" Kai asked Reese.
"Not me personally," Reese said. "But I know people who can."
The decryption took a week and revealed coded communications referring to "Project Whitmore" with timeline extending years into the future.
"They've been planning this since before you even reclaimed territories," Kai said, reading the files.
"Planning what exactly?" Elara asked.
"Complete control of rare earth deposits in the Pacific Northwest," Reese said, pulling up a map. "Your territories are just one piece."
"How many other pieces?" Elara asked.
"At least fifteen properties across four states," Reese said. "All containing valuable minerals."
"So this Architect wants to monopolize rare earth extraction," Kai said.
"And eliminate anyone who won't cooperate," Elara said. "Like my family."
"Exactly," Reese confirmed.
"Then we need to warn the other property owners," Elara said.
"Already doing that," Reese said. "But some won't believe the threat until it's too late."
Over the next month, Elara contacted twelve of the fifteen property owners, warning them about the Architect's plans.
Eight thanked her and increased security.
Four dismissed her as paranoid.
Two of those four died in "accidents" within weeks.
"They're moving faster than we thought," Kai said after the second death.
"Because Viktor's failure made them desperate," Reese said. "They need to secure properties quickly before more owners are warned."
"So we're in a race," Elara said. "Warn everyone before they're killed."
"And find the Architect before they succeed," Kai added.
The investigation intensified but the Architect remained frustratingly elusive—communications routed through proxies, payments untraceable, identity completely hidden.
"It's like fighting a ghost," Elara said in frustration.
"Ghosts leave traces," Reese said. "We just need to find the right one."
The breakthrough came from unexpected source—Emma discovered financial connections while researching environmental regulations.
"Look at this," she showed Elara documents. "Three shell companies bidding on mining rights all trace back to the same holding company."
"Which holding company?" Elara asked.
"Kronos International," Emma said. "Registered in Malta, owned by anonymous trust."
"Another dead end," Elara said.
"Not quite," Emma said. "The trust was established by a law firm that has exactly one other client."
"Who?" Elara asked.
"Elder Michael," Emma said.
The room went silent.
"Elder Michael from our pack council?" Kai said in disbelief.
"The same," Emma confirmed. "He's been moving money through Kronos Interna
tional for five years."
"Could be coincidence," Kai said weakly.
"Or he's the Architect," Elara said. "Hiding in plain sight.”
