Chapter 57 Hopelessness

Chapter 57 Hopelessness
After the lawyer left, Elara felt the weight of everything pressing down—four days until her bloodline claim was decided, five assassins still hunting her, and her son hidden away for safety.

Her phone rang with an unknown number and she almost didn't answer, but something made her pick up.

"Elara Whitmore?" a man's voice asked.

"Who is this?" she demanded.

"Someone who knows what Darius did to your parents," the man said. "And someone who wants to help you make him pay."

"Everyone suddenly wants to help me," Elara said. "Why should I trust you?"

"Because I have security footage from the night your father died," the man said. "Footage that shows exactly who poisoned him."

Elara's breath caught. "Poisoned?"

"Slow-acting toxin that mimicked heart failure," the man said. "Darius's specialty, untraceable unless you know what to look for."

"Why are you telling me this?" Elara asked.

"Because I was Darius's personal physician for fifteen years," the man said. "And I've been carrying guilt about the people he made me help kill."

"You helped him murder people?" Elara asked.

"I provided the poisons and the medical cover stories," the man admitted. "And I'm ready to confess everything if you'll guarantee me immunity."

"I can't guarantee anything," Elara said.

"Then talk to federal authorities," the man said. "Tell them Dr. Richard Foster is willing to testify about thirty years of murders ordered by Darius Silvercrest in exchange for witness protection."

"Why come forward now?" Elara asked.

"Because my daughter was diagnosed with terminal cancer," Dr. Foster said. "And I want to die with a clear conscience knowing I tried to make amends."

"The footage of my father's death," Elara said. "Can you provide it?"

"I'll email it tonight," Dr. Foster said. "Along with medical records showing the poison used and how it was administered."

The call ended and Elara immediately contacted federal agents who agreed to meet with Dr. Foster under protected conditions.

"If his testimony is legitimate, this could add dozens of murder charges to Darius's case," the lead agent said.

"Can you protect him?" Elara asked. "Darius has reach even from prison."

"We'll put him in maximum security witness protection," the agent promised. "No one gets to him."

That night the promised email arrived with attachments that made Elara sick—security footage showing a woman entering her childhood home with a bag, leaving thirty minutes later, and her father collapsing an hour after that.

Medical records detailed thallium poisoning administered over several weeks through contaminated food.

"Your father was murdered slowly," Kai said, reading over her shoulder. "Darius made him suffer."

"Because he was getting too close to the truth about my mother," Elara said.

"Which means Darius has been destroying your family for decades," Kai said. "And you're the only one left."

"Not for long," Elara said grimly. "The regional council meeting is in four days, and I'm going to make sure everyone knows what he did."

"That makes you a bigger target," Kai warned.

"I'm already the biggest target," Elara said. "At least this way I'm fighting back."

The next three days passed in a blur of preparation and paranoia, with Reese reporting that she'd located three of the five active assassins.

"What happened to them?" Elara asked.

"Neutralized," Reese said without elaborating.

"The other two?" Kai asked.

"Still searching," Reese said. "But they've gone dark, probably waiting for the regional council meeting when you'll be most exposed."

"Can you protect her during the meeting?" Kai asked.

"I can try," Reese said. "But regional council meetings don't allow armed security inside the chamber, only council-approved guards."

"Then we need to ensure those guards aren't compromised," Kai said.

"Already working on it," Reese said.

The night before the meeting, Elara couldn't sleep and found herself in Adrian's empty room touching his toys and breathing in his little-boy scent that still lingered on his pillow.

"Missing him?" Kai asked from the doorway.

"Every second," Elara admitted.

"Maya sent photos," Kai said and showed her his phone—Adrian playing on a beach, building sandcastles, laughing with Maya's son.

"He looks happy," Elara said.

"He is happy," Kai said. "And safe, which is what matters."

"I want him home," Elara said.

"Soon," Kai promised. "After tomorrow, after we win your bloodline claim and secure his future."

"What if we don't win?" Elara asked.

"Then we figure out Plan B," Kai said. "But we will win, the evidence is too strong."

Elara wanted to believe him but couldn't shake the feeling that something was going to go wrong.

At midnight her phone buzzed with a text from one of the two remaining assassins: "See you at the council meeting. You won't see me coming."

She showed it to Reese who cursed and immediately started making calls to increase security.

"They're planning to attack during the meeting," Reese said. "When you're most vulnerable."

"Can we postpone?" Elara asked.

"No," Kai said firmly. "Postponing shows weakness and gives our enemies more time to plan."

"So we walk into a trap," Elara said.

"We walk in prepared," Kai corrected. "And we trust that Reese and her team will keep you safe."

"No pressure," Reese muttered.

Morning came too fast and Elara dressed in formal pack attire—traditional omega ceremonial dress that felt like armor and prison simultaneously.

"You look like a Luna," Kai said.

"I look like someone playing dress-up," Elara said.

"You look like someone claiming her birthright," Kai corrected.

They drove to the regional council building with four security vehicles surrounding them, and Elara felt like she was heading to her own execution.

The building was impressive—three stories of stone and glass, built to intimidate anyone who entered.

Inside, two hundred pack representatives filled the gallery while council members sat at a raised platform.

Elara took her seat at the petitioner's table with her lawyer while Kai sat in the gallery with other Alpha representatives.

"The regional council recognizes the bloodline claim of Elara Whitmore regarding Whitmore ancestral territories currently held by Silvercrest pack," the head councilor announced.

"Let the presentation begin.”
