Chapter 36 Escape plan organising
Elara looked at Adrian sleeping on the couch, still wrapped in the hospital blanket, and felt her chest tighten because every plan put him in danger whether he was there or not.
"What if Mandivus realizes it's not Adrian?" she asked.
"Then you run and the federal team moves in early," Liam said. "Either way, Kai gets rescued."
"And Mandivus?" Elara asked.
"Gets arrested or killed," Maya said. "Preferably arrested so he can face trial for everything he's done."
Elara studied the maps and plans, looking for flaws but finding only risk after risk after risk.
"When do we start?" she asked finally.
"Now," Liam said and pulled out his phone. "I'm calling the federal contact, Maya will arrange the decoy, and you need to prepare for the hardest performance of your life."
"What about Adrian?" Elara asked. "Where will he be during all this?"
"Safe with me," Maya said. "Far away from the borderlands and hidden where no one can find him."
"I'm supposed to trust you with my son?" Elara asked.
"I know I don't deserve your trust," Maya said. "But I'm asking for it anyway, because this is the only way to save Kai and stop Mandivus."
Elara looked at Maya and saw genuine remorse in her eyes, saw the same woman who'd once been her best friend before money and status corrupted everything.
"Okay," she said. "But if anything happens to Adrian—"
"It won't," Maya promised. "I'll protect him with my life."
Liam made his calls while Maya prepared supplies, and within an hour federal agents were being briefed on the situation and a child actor was being transported to a secure location.
"They're moving fast," Liam said after his final call. "Raid is scheduled for 3 AM, which gives you until 2:30 to get inside and create your distraction."
"What kind of distraction?" Elara asked.
"The kind that makes Mandivus focus entirely on you," Liam said. "Which means revealing information he wants, offering deals he can't refuse, keeping his attention while agents breach the compound."
"So I improvise," Elara said.
"You survive," Maya corrected. "Whatever it takes to stay alive until the raid starts."
They spent the next eight hours preparing—going over maps, discussing contingencies, rehearsing scenarios—until Elara's head spun with plans and backup plans and emergency protocols.
At midnight Maya's phone buzzed with confirmation that the child actor was in place and the federal team was ready to move.
"It's time," Maya said.
Elara went to where Adrian was sleeping and kissed his forehead, memorizing his face in case this was the last time she saw him.
"I love you baby," she whispered. "Mama's going to fix everything."
Adrian stirred but didn't wake, and Elara forced herself to walk away.
Maya drove her to a neutral location where federal agents waited with body armor and communication equipment.
"We'll have you wired the entire time," the lead agent explained. "The moment you say the code phrase 'the deal is done' we breach immediately regardless of timeline."
"And if something goes wrong before that?" Elara asked.
"Then you use your best judgment," the agent said. "But understand that once you're inside that compound, you're on your own until we move."
"I understand," Elara said and put on the equipment they gave her—lightweight armor hidden under her clothes, an earpiece that would let her hear but not respond, and a panic button disguised as a bracelet.
The child actor was brought in—a boy around Adrian's age with similar features, drugged enough to seem lethargic but awake enough to respond to basic commands.
"This feels wrong," Elara said.
"This feels like survival," Maya corrected. "Now go save your mate."
Elara was driven to the borderlands in an unmarked vehicle, dropped off a mile from Mandivus's compound with the child actor in her arms and nothing but the clothes on her back.
She walked the final mile in darkness, following the road until the compound appeared—a sprawling structure surrounded by high walls and guard towers, exactly as threatening as she'd imagined.
At the gate she announced herself to the cameras she knew were watching.
"I'm here for the exchange," she said. "Elara Whitmore with Adrian Silvercrest."
The gates opened and four armed guards surrounded her immediately, checking her for weapons and finding nothing but the hidden equipment that looked like normal clothing.
"This way," one guard said and led her through the compound to a large room where Mandivus sat on a throne-like chair with Kai bound and kneeling beside him.
Kai's face was bruised and bloodied but his eyes were alert, and when he saw Elara they filled with horror.
"You shouldn't have come," he said.
"Quiet," Mandivus ordered and stood, walking toward Elara. "Let me see the boy."
Elara held out the drugged child actor and prayed Mandivus wouldn't look too closely.
Mandivus lifted the boy's chin and studied his face, and Elara held her breath waiting for recognition or alarm.
"He looks ill," Mandivus observed.
"Hospital infection," Elara said. "He'll recover."
Mandivus nodded slowly. "Then the deal is acceptable, I take the boy and you take your mate."
He gestured and guards cut Kai's bonds, pulling him to his feet.
"Wait," Elara said. "I need something from you first."
Mandivus raised an eyebrow. "You're not in a position to negotiate."
"I need your word that you'll leave us alone," Elara said. "No more hunting, no more threats, once I hand over Adrian we're done."
"You have my word," Mandivus said easily.
"Swear it," Elara pressed. "By pack law and borderlands code."
Mandivus smiled coldly. "You don't trust me."
"I don't trust anyone," Elara said. "Swear it or the deal is off."
Mandivus considered for a moment then raised his hand. "I swear by borderlands code that once I receive the boy, Elara Whitmore and Kai Silvercrest will be free of any claims or threats from me."
"The deal is done," Elara said—the code phrase.
Everything happened at once—explosions rocked the compound's outer walls, gunfire erupted from multiple directions, and federal agents poured through breached entry points.
Mandivus realized the deception immediately and lunged for the child actor who Elara threw aside as she dove toward Kai.
"Run!" she shouted and they sprinted for the nearest exit as the compound descended into chaos.
Guards fired at them and agents returned fire, and Elara felt a bullet graze her shoulder as they burst through a side door into the night.
Behind them Mandivus roared with fury and she heard him ordering his men to pursue, but federal agents were everywhere now and the compound was surrounded.
Kai pulled her toward the forest and they ran until Elara's legs gave out and she collapsed against a tree, breathing hard and bleeding from the shoulder wound.
"You came for me," Kai said, pressing his hands against her wound to stop the bleeding.
"Of course I did," Elara said. "You're Adrian's father."
"I thought you hated me," Kai said.
"I do," Elara said. "But I hate Mandivus more."
Kai laughed weakly and then kissed her forehead. "Thank you for not giving him our son."
"Never," Elara said. "He's ours and no one takes him from us."
Behind them the compound lit up with more explosions and gunfire as federal agents secured the area, and Elara closed her eyes knowing they'd survived but not knowing what came next.
