Chapter 175

Chapter 175
Renée's POV

Waiting for the police in Alex's study was one of the hardest things I've had to do in a long while.
I was all over the place. So restless and impatient.
Alex was surprisingly calm.
His eyes were shut.
Stuck in his own thoughts.

We hadn't spoken much because he had been mostly quiet. I understood that he was grieving.
But that didn't stop me from worrying about him.

My legs bounced rapidly, the action causing a consistent but soft vibration on the couch.

“Nervous?” Alex finally spoke and I stopped bouncing my legs, my head immediately turning to him.

“No,” Lie. I was nervous. “Just restless,” I answered.

“Why?” he asked as he opened his eyes, looking completely drained.

“I don't know,” I said, as I turned away.

I couldn't keep still just waiting for answers. It was nerve wracking. But I wasn't going to tell him that. It was insignificant in comparison to what was on ground and what he was going through.

Silence. I tried to control my legs from bouncing.
I focused on my breathing instead. Good distraction.

“I'm sorry” he suddenly said and I froze before turning to him.
Huh?

“Ummm, why?” I asked, clearly confused.

His eyes were trained on me as he sat up from the semi slouchy position he was in before.

“For making you feel like you can't talk to me” he said and I shook my head.

“That's not true. You're grieving Alex, I understand that” I said.
Why would he even think that? Dear goddess, the heart of this man.

“Yes, but still,” he paused , shaking his head with a sharp sigh. “I know I have been quiet and I barely talk to you and I know it's wrong. It's just… it all still feels like a dream and… I don't know…” he trailed off.

“But no matter what, it's not an excuse for me to push you away. I'm sorry Renée” By the time he was done, I was completely tongue tied and I just stared at him like he had grown horns.
He had nothing to apologize for and yet…

I couldn't talk, I just kept staring.

He sighed before moving closer to me.
“You're mad, aren't you?” He asked. I just stayed quiet.

“I'm so sorry” he said as he pulled me closer and wrapped his arms around me in a hug.

What did I do to deserve a man like this? How can someone be so thoughtful and sweet?

I finally got my voice back and pulled back slightly. He let me.
“Alex, I'm not mad at all” I said, my hands cupping his cheeks.
He looked at me with skepticism and I almost laughed.

“I'm really not,” I said with a smile.

“Are you sure?” He asked with an unsure look and my hands fell to his.

“Positive” I answered and his shoulders sagged in relief.

“I'm just nervous about the results, that's all. We narrowed it down to someone we know. Knowing there's someone else out there that has betrayed us is… a lot. I don't like the feeling of betrayal” I explained.

He sighed again and tucked a stray strand of my hair behind my ear.
“No matter what the results show, everything will be perfectly fine. I promise” he said and I opened my mouth to talk when suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
Our heads whipped in the direction of the sound at the same time.

“Come in” Alex ordered.

“Your Majesties” a guard greeted us, bowing in respect, before he continued, “They're here”

“Let them in” Alex said and the guard bowed and left.

I sat upright. It was time.

Shortly after, two men walked in, both clad in casual wear. Anyone who had a sharp eye would instantly know they were detectives.

They greeted us and sat down opposite us.

I crossed my legs and interlocked my fingers as we waited for them to talk.

“Based on our findings and investigation, along with your help, we have been able to piece together what must have happened on the day of Miss Lyons death.” One of them, named John said.

“Go on,” Alex urged them.

The second guy, Austin, took over.
“Miss Lyons came to the palace that day and didn't step out until the culprit called her out to meet by the old well, which is why those guards heard her on a call. For some reason, a scuffle happened, or better still, a fight. A physical fight. The scratch marks we found on her skin were a big giveaway that there was struggle. While this was going on, somehow she hit her head on the side of the well, creating the gash we found on her head, which was the real cause of her death.”

“Yes. After she passed, the culprit tried to get rid of the evidence by throwing her body in the well. The sick part is, they could have saved her. But they waited for her to take her last breath before throwing her in.” John explained further.

I placed my hands over Alex's balled up fists to calm him down. It worked. Somehow.

I looked at the men opposite us.

“Who is the culprit?” I asked.

They cleared their throats and exchanged glances, before looking back at me.
Only this time, it felt weird.

I frowned.

“Speak.” I ordered and their eyes widened in fear.

“Based on the DNA analysis we ran, our suspect is Sabrina Sinclair,” John said and my heart dropped to the pit of my stomach.
What?.

“Your sister” Austin felt the need to add, looking at me with an odd look.
I was too shocked to even put him in his place.

“What?” I whispered.
I've always known Sabrina was unhinged and crazy but to actually go through with murder?

“She almost killed you, remember?” Hera said.

True but…
Goddess.

It took Alex's low grow-like sound to snap me back into reality.
I looked up and found him glaring at Austin.

“You will not disrespect your Luna.” He said, like it was the most important thing in the world at that moment. Austin bowed his head in fear.

“My apologies, Your Majesty,” he said.

“Not to me, you fool” Alex said, his tone warning.

Austin cleared his throat and looked at me carefully.
Good. Because one wrong move, and his head would be off his head.

“My apologies, Your Majesty” he said, apologizing to me this time.

I said nothing.
I just stared at him.

Alex looked at me, almost asking if I was satisfied.
I sighed. He wasn't going to let it go unless I was satisfied.

I looked at Austin. He was definitely rude but I didn't really care much at that moment.
Still, I had to make sure they knew not to mess with me.

I straightened.
“Let it not happen again.” I warned and he nodded.

Silence fell over us again. My mind instantly fell into the chaos it was before.
“Have you arrested her?” Alex asked.

Austin stayed quiet this time.
“Our men are presently on it sir. But it seems she's gone into hiding”. John explained.

“Are you telling me you lost her?” Alex asked, clearly pissed.

“Your Majesty, I -”

“She's not my sister” I suddenly blurted.
Everyone stared at me and I realized I had said it out loud.

“What?” John asked and I blinked before turning to Alex, who looked just as confused.

“She's not my sister” I said again and realization dawned on him.

“Ohhh, she's your step sister” he said, emphasizing on ‘step’.

“No. We're not related by blood at all’ I said and his frown deepened.

“I'll explain later,” I said, my eyes promising an explanation.

“But I'd like you to take note of that” I said, turning back to the men.

“Sabrina is not my sister. And she's not a Sinclair. Take note of that. And never repeat that statement” I said, pointedly.
Austin looked away.

“Yes, Your Majesty” they chorused.

“Good.” I said.

“Now, a question. Did you stop to think that she might have had help?” I asked, letting the thought that had bugged me since they mentioned her name.

“There's no reason for us to believe so,” Austin said, his tone a little elevated.
Oh man. This dude needed to be schooled.

I raised a brow.

“No wonder our police system is so crooked.” I said, shaking my head in disappointment.

“There is no way a girl like Sabrina could single handedly carry Stella all on her own and throw her into a well that high off the ground. First off, Stella weighs more than Sabrina and top it all off, Sabrina falls on the smaller side. It's so obvious she had help. More likely, a man” I explained my theory.

They fell silent.
Austin looked away.

“She's right.” Alex said, looking like a proud husband.
“But with all due respect Alpha, who could it possibly be?” John asked.

“I have a good idea who it might be.” I said and turned to Alex.

His eyes widened as he realised who I was referring to.

“Gregory William” he said and I nodded.

“Find him. Look into it. And I have a strong feeling you just might find Sabrina there too. Hiding in plain sight is so her style” I said.

The men just stared at us in shock.

“You heard her. What are you waiting for?” Alex questioned and they immediately scrambled to their feet, paying their respects and instantly getting to work.

As soon as we were alone again, Alex grabbed me by the waist and pulled me closer, his lips crashing into mine in a hungry kiss.

Woah.

I kissed back, but I couldn't meet up with his energy.
We finally pulled apart. I was a panting mess.

“You're so fucking hot when you talk like that” he said and I stared at him for a second before bursting into laughter.
