What happened to her?

What happened to her?

Damon pov

After dinner my father calls me back into a meeting, so I walk Evie back to our room and kiss her forehead promising I will return soon. I was heart broken after she explained why she was so excited I was with her all afternoon. I didn’t realize how little time I have spent with her lately and it hurt me to hear that she was used to it and basically expected it from me. I need to do better, she deserves more for me I plan to tell my father today that I will no longer be available in the morning. I knock on his door and hear my fathers voice “enter.” I open the door and see my father lounging in his sitting room with a glass of what appears to be whiskey in his hand as he rubs his temple. He lifts his cup up and take a long drink then looks my way “oh good you here. We have much to discuss after you decided to play hookie this afternoon. You were supposed to go to to training and come back. What happened?” My father asks with a bit of bite. I sigh and rub the back of my neck, here goes nothing. “ Yeah I know I’m sorry, I was with Evie I’ve been neglecting her and I want to change that. So with that being said from now on I won’t be available until after breakfast.” I say trying to muster up the confidence to stand tall against him. I have my back to my father and I am waiting from him to rip into me when the silence finally breaks to the sound of him chuckling. “Is your mate a little upset that you have responsibilities you have to take care of, unlike when you were hiding away at university.” I bite back my snarl “no that’s not It father. Actually she was completely understanding and made me promise never to put her needs before those of the kingdom. I am doing this because I was hurt to know she expects me to never be around and barely spend any time together. I told her I wanted to do this and she agreed.” I say staring at my father. I see a wave of emotions pass over his face before he calms it again. “ I have to say I think it’s very mature of her to realize you have responsibilities, but I also think you need to prioritize her. I don’t feel I did that enough with your mother and I regret it now. I don’t want you to have the same regrets that I do. So I will respect your new schedule son.”  I am shocked to hear him say this, I walk over to the bar and pour myself my own glass of whiskey. Then I walk back over and sit down in one of the chairs. My father hasn’t spoken about my mother since the day that she died. In fact I don’t even know the details of how it all happened. I take a drink then say “thank you for the support dad. I appreciate it, I don’t want to have any regrets either. Do you feel comfortable telling me what happened, I never really got that closure.” My dad looks uncomfortable and gets up and begins pacing the room. After he’s circled the room about 20 times he stops at the bar and picks up the whole bottle of whiskey before returning to his pacing. “Dad you don’t have to tell me if you aren’t ready.” I say as soothing as I can. I never realized the amount of stress that is obviously attached to whatever happened. “No… no you deserve the truth. It’s just hard for me to talk about. I loved her more than you can imagine given how I have handled everything.” He gulps then says “ your mother was murdered by rouges who broke into the castle looking for me. I killed their Alpha and Luna two months earlier returning from visiting one of the packs. We were returning from an inspection running in our wolf forms when all of the sudden we were attacked. Rouges were everywhere 15-20 of them surrounding us and they were trying to kill me. So we fought back and only two ended up getting away. I didn’t even realize it was an Alpha and Luna were involved until after it all happened. We even sent a message explaining what happened and why we fought so they didn’t think it’s was unmotivated. Two months went by and were heard nothing so I let the defenses slip a little figuring that they understood and moved on. I was wrong they were just waiting for me to make a mistake and I did. I finally caved and let your mom take her evening stroll in her rose garden, I hadn’t let her in the two months since everything had happened. That night then new Alpha came and killed your mother avenging his parents or so the note written in her blood said. I didn’t tell you what happened because I didn’t want you to know it’s all my fault. Everything is my fault…” he says defeatedly. Then put the bottle of whiskey to his mouth and drinks half of it. I don’t know what to say or what to think, my father lost his mate my mother to rouges and now I’m in the same kind of situation. What if I can’t protect her, what if they get through the castle defenses again. I have been letting Evie walk in the rose garden every night whether I am there or not thinking she is safe. “I let Evie walk in the garden alone.. what if… what if something happens to her?” I ask feeling sick to my stomach. “It’s okay son our defenses are stronger than they have ever been I will never make the same mistake twice. I promise I will keep Evie safe and I will help you however you need. What happened to your mother will never happen again.” My father says with confidence giving my shoulder a squeeze. I look up and see a tear streaming down his face. I nod feeling more panicked now than I have since the rouge problem started, maybe this is why he didn’t tell me.
