Chapter 77 Maybe Fate
COURTNEY
A small smile spread all over my face as I spotted Zora in her bedroom, looking like she was fuming as she did a lot these days as I've heard.
I still haven't talked to her since I blabbed to the Alpha.
Still, you can’t blame me. He's really intimidating with those piercing green eyes of his that become unnaturally black, especially when he's lost his cool.
I laid down beside her,
“Am I selfish for being happier here than you are? Because it's starting to look that way”, I said to her.
Sincerely, I was happier here.
Even though the circumstances that brought us here weren't right, I loved it here.
It's fascinating, and I find myself being awestruck every single time.
Zora released a heavy sigh, throwing her head back,
“What's happening this time? Who do you want to kill? Ryker or Scarlett? Just say the word girl” I urged, a teasing glint in my eyes as I playfully bumped her shoulders.
Her cheeks finally cracked a little smile in return, steering the conversation to reminiscing on our times at the city, with actual humans.
Even though I never really missed the city as much anymore, I found it cruel to let Zora know of it and instead chose to indulge her.
She's working her ass off to get us out of here while I lag around.
“You’re literally like royalty here, Zora. I don't see why you worry so much”, I pointed out, caressing her cheeks
“Come on, Courtney, I'd rather be a peasant back at our home than be anything here”, she sharply retorted, slowly turning to face me.
“Hold on, why do I get this feeling you already like this place? Don't tell me...."
"I'm sorry. I told Ryker everything about the children." I apologized, she deserved as much.
"It's okay." She grinned, then frowned almost instantly, "You have not answered my question."
I swallowed deeply, feeling my heart stuck in my throat, kicking out every source of air supply that I failed to breathe.
“Courtney!”, she shook my shoulders, a tinge of desperation in her voice. “What is it you like about this damn place?”
My lips parted, hoping to magically have a meaningful response, but I only ended up swallowing a lot more air.
“I really don't know, Zora”, I managed to whisper after some minutes. “For some reason, this place just feels like where you belong, and of course, wherever you are is where I'd be also, but...."
I grabbed her arm, and I felt her stiffen.
“Don’t worry too much, we can just move to another city or country, whichever suits you”, I chuckled awkwardly.
“I'd say we could move, but I think I know it as well as you do that we might actually be here forever, especially now he's aware about the kids”, her gaze lowered as fiddling with her nails. "I'm just hoping he stands by his words. That way, we can leave here,"
I pursed my lips tightly, lost for the right words to say. She leaned fully into my arms, staying silent.
I'm going to definitely miss this place, but at least she finally admitted THAT.
Maybe living in the palace didn't make that much difference after all. I grumbled in annoyance as I made my way down to the kitchen, hoping to find something to ease my boredom.
The servants kept their head hung low as they walked past me, and even the guards seemed to have a better life than I.
“One more day like this, and I might really lose my mind”, I muttered through gritted teeth, flinging the doors to the freezer and cabinets open.
Fortunately, none of the kitchen maids stayed in the kitchen during the afternoons.
“Got you!”
I grabbed the medium-sized bowl of cheese and made my way to my favorite spot.
The palace rooftop.
I'd found it impossible to stay away since Tyler dragged me here a few days back.
Settling down on one of the chairs, I entertained myself with the sight of people moving up and about while filling my mouth with cheese.
“Oh shit!”
My head snapped to the voice behind me, totally startled.
“Wesley?” I asked in a disbelieving tone.
“Sorry I disturbed you. I just didn't expect you'd be here by this time” he apologized, turning around to walk away.
“By this time?” I asked in confusion. “Do you come here too?”
He let out a sigh, staring at me warily.
Ponting to the chair I was sitting on. “That's actually my spot”
“Hmmm”, I crossed my arms over my chest, straightening my back. “Since when?”
His face broke into a faint smile with a hint of loss in his eyes. “Since...... I don't remember...", he answered.
While I itched to blurt out all the questions I suddenly had for him, the expression on his face called for something different.
“I was expecting to see you."
He smiled softly.
Compared to the image of the Alpha Zora painted in my head, Wesley is like a bug teddy bear.
Do I have a chance with him? Should I try? It'd be nice to have cute little half wolves, or would they be full wolves?
Would that mean we'll have to stay here? Zora won't have a choice, right?
"What are you think so hard about?"
My cheeks burned hot, "Nothing!" I said quickly, my voice high pitched.
He wriggled his brows, "You look cute when you lie."
Oh my gawd!!!
Did he just say that??
Goodness goddess!!!
Play it cool, Courtney, play it cool.
Yet I couldn't stop my heart from beating wildly fast.
His brow creased in worry, "Are you okay?"
My cheeks burned hot.
If we got married, would we stay in the palace too?
"Yes, I just remembered I need to read bedtime stories to the children," I squeaked and ran out to the kids' room.
“The stories aren't working anymore," Tyler whined the instant he saw me, rolling on his bed.
“Can't you just make up something better?”, Leah asked softly, staring at me expectantly.
I pushed the book aside I took, feeling tired and hopeless. My heart was still beating from my encounter with Wesley.
Oh goodness! Does this mean I'm fraternizing with the enemy? Would Zora be mad at me??
"Aunt Courtney!!" Leah yelled.
“Kids, I'm too tired to make up anything right now. Why don't you two make up something for yourselves instead?” I suggested, tucking them in.
The wide, mischievous grin on Tyler's face instantly caught my attention.
“Don't you dare tell your sister scary stories, Tyler!” I warned sternly.
He burst out laughing while I kissed Leah on her forehead and walked out the door, ignoring Tyler’s protests.
Once in the dark hallways again, I pressed my fingers into my forehead, feeling an incoming headache.
Oh goodness, did I handle that, right?
I grabbed an empty glass and a wine bottle, I made my way to the back porch for some air
Despite the darkness, I could still make out the lone figure sitting on the air. I knew it wasn't the Alpha because it didn't feel like I wanted to piss my pants.
I moved closer.
Wesley again.
He turned.
Oh goodness, and he has seen me. There's no running away this time.
I cleared my throat, stood straighter, and sat beside him.
"Well..... it's you again." He gave me a small smile.
"Maybe this is fate, and we're meant to be?" I asked.
He cocked his head, studying me, "I like you, you're funny."
