Chapter 40 Coming soon
LUCAS
I paced up and down my living room with a dark expression. This was already messing with my head more than I'd imagined.
Aside from the fact that my real identity risked being exposed to a lot more people if I kept in going like this, the search for Zora also seemed to be leading me nowhere important.
I groaned in frustration, pulling at my hair when the doorbell rang.
I instantly straightened up, looking down at my shredded shirt and blood stained hands. The noise of keys rattling from outside startled me.
I sniffed.
Dammit! Sylvia just had to stick her nose into everything concerning my damn business.
I rushed towards my bathroom, slamming the door shut right at the very moment I heard her annoying footsteps in the apartment.
“Lucas?” She called, her voice drawing closer and closer until she was right outside my bathroom door. “Are you okay? I smell, sniffs... sniffs harder, "I smell blood”.
I anxiously scrubbed my hands under the running water, becoming more annoyed by her prescence. “What are you doing here again? Thought I told you not to come”, I asked instead, eager to change the subject.
“Well sue me for being worried about my little brother”, she replied, her voice trailing off like she'd backed away from the door.
I'd just released a huge sigh of relief.
Then the door was ripped from its hinges, making me grip the sink to maintain my balance.
“Shit Sylivia! What if I was naked?”, I shot angrily, turning off the running tap and heading out of the bathroom as there was nothing left to hide from her anymore.
“I knew you were not”, she answered smugly, following me from behind in silence.
“What do you want?”
“It's pretty obvious you killed someone, so who was the unlucky victim this time?”
I sank into my bed, stubbornly refusing to look in her direction. “A lead”, I replied in a low voice, turning to glare at her. “A very stubborn lead”.
She crossed her arms across her chest, looking unfazed. “Still searching for Zora huh? Thought you said she was dead”, she looked curious.
I shifted uncomfortably, unconvinced on whether to come clean or not about Zora.
“She's still alive, isn't she?”, she nodded slowly, staring straight into my eyes and reading me like an open book.
“Look it's none of your business okay? I'd find her then come home as you all want”, I stood up in agitation.
“You know damn well it's more than that Lucas”, she countered in the same tone. “Your recklessness would get us all fished out and it'll be the end of our family. We just need you safe, and not be reckless."
A phone rang,
Startled, we both turned towards the direction of the bathroom where the sound came from.
Shit!
That was the riff raff’s phone.
“You have to leave”, I ushered Sylvia out in a hurry, but she suddenly came to an halt in the doorway, turning to face me with a worried frown between her eyebrows.
“Know who you're dealing with Lucas, and be careful”.
She walked away without turning back while I headed back into the bathroom, fishing out the phone from my trousers.
An hopeful glint shone in my eyes as I glanced through the text from a sender named Simon. Grinning widely, I hurriedly texted back asking to meet up later in the day.
I sat patiently, at the very same private booth his sucker of a friend was killed, impatiently checking my watch.
Before I could entertain any more unencouraging thoughts, the door opened, letting in some of the noise from the club downstairs.
“Who are you and why are you at this reserved booth?!” The Simon in question came closer, narrowing his eyes at me.
"If you tell me what I need to know, then maybe I might let you go."
He frowned, sitting across me, “Where is he? What did you do to him? I knew something was wrong when he replied my text fast”
“I think we’re going to be best of friends, or don't you think so?” I said, a grin spreading on my face.
He pursed his lips, looking to be seriously considering the question while I quietly scanned him, trying to tell if he would be just as difficult or not.
Well, either ways he wouldn't get out of here alive.
“What do you want?”, he asked, leaning forward as giving me a cold stare.
I chuckled, impressed already. “I want to know where Zora is, your friend knew her, so he must have spoken about her to you. I just need to know her whereabouts."
He cluck his tongue, raising an eyebrow at me, "Zora? How do you know her?"
"My fiancee, now tell me where she is."
“First off, I'm not obliged to tell you where she is and I don't really know her”, he corrected, “I have only seen her once and that was just weeks ago in a party”.
My brows furrowed in curiosity.
"I’m assuming this party's related to where she is right now?” I pressed further, hating the way i sounded impatient.
He let out a sigh. “It was at the Alpha King's party”
"An Alpha's?"
He eyed me, "I thought you're a werewolf too. Don't you know who an Alpha is?"
How did he‐
"You're human or you're masking?"
"I'm human. Me and my friend you have in hostage. We just do business together."
"And yet you attended the Alpha King's party?"
"Like I said, Business."
"Is that all I need to know?"
"Forget her. The Alpha King isn't one to be trifled with. I witnessed his cruelty first hand."
"She was his mate and I doubt you'd be able to take her easily."
"If life was easy, we won't be in this situation now, would we?"
He shrugged.
“Who is the Alpha King?”
“Alpha Ryker”
Ryker. Ryker.
I sank in my chair, letting the name sink into my head.
It was him.
For some reason, I believed Simon.
I stood, my tall build overshadowed him as I towered over Simon. “Where is he? Take me to him”, I demanded.
He shook his head in refusal, looking frightened. “Leading you to Ryker would cost me my life and business. I'm sorry I can't”.
I let my claws grow out underneath the table. “Disobeying my orders would cost you your blood, spilled all over this goddamn room. So choose carefully”
He attempted to stand up but my claws pressed into his shoulders, drawing blood as his whimpers filled the room. “Where is Ryker?” I asked again.
"I know you've killed my friend," his determination hardened in his expression, and just when I decided to discard him by splitting his throat open with one strike from my claws.
My face was assaulted with the hot coffee on our table and something else.
Wolfsbane.
My hands covered my face as I groaned loudly until it finally died down
I scanned the empty room, not surprised to see he'd run away.
He didn't seem like a real threat yet, as long as he knew nothing about my real identity.
So all that was left was searching for Ryker.
Finding him should be easy now that I have a name and where to start.
I'm coming for you soon, Zora.
