Chapter 63 A Poisoned Promise
Zayne's POV
After a series of questions, I was convinced that Jace was telling the truth but it doesn't mean I was going to lower my guard against him. At the same time, I was grateful that he saved Red from the hellhole she called home…but she was safe now, I'd make sure that doesn't change even if I had to die trying.
“What are you going to do about them?" Xavier asked, “Luna Alyssa seems to be getting along with him."
I paused, “for now, he's going to be here until I figure out who the shooter is.”
He nodded, "hopefully we get some answers at the Ravenshadow Pack.” He said, "the car's already waiting.”
Without waiting any more time, I pushed my chair back while grabbing the report that contained a summary of the attack in the Pack we were going to.
Going straight to the childcare, where Red was showing some kids the right method of colouring a diagram. Immediately she saw me, her smile widened as she came towards me. “You look like you're falling in love with me all over again." She teased quietly.
I pulled her closer, my arms tightening on her waist, “I am…every fucking day.”
"Ooh, I like the sound of that.” She murmured, "and I'm falling in love with you too…every single day."
I kissed her, like my life depended on it…it kinda does and she responded, her hand wrapped itself around my neck as I pulled her closer. The kiss deepened and I was tempted to cancel my journey to shadowmoon.
“Maybe try not to make a baby while we can all see it happen?" Aileen said, causing us to pull apart and I missed the feeling of her lips on mine. I shot Aileen a glare but she just shrugged as she went on with whatever she was doing.
Red chuckled, “Come back as soon as you can…and be careful.” She said.
"Always…I love you." I told her, kissing her lips one more time before turning to leave. But not without asking her to mindlink me if anything happens.
The ride to Shadowmoon Pack was long, Tristan updated me on the recent incident the Pack sent last minute. Xavier was staying back to take care of the back in my absence. After a while, my mind drifted to Red even though I saw her only a few minutes ago. Tristan also looked lost in his own thoughts.
The car finally came to a stop and I saw the Alpha of the Pack approaching us alongside other pack members who couldn't choose between being thrilled about my presence or scared about what the conclusion of the recent attacks would be.
“Alpha Zayne," the Alpha called, bowing his head, “thank you for coming on such short notice."
I just nodded and let him lead me inside the Pack house and them towards the training ground. “I thought you might want to see this." He said, and before I could ask what he was talking about, we reached the training ground where about four other warriors gathered around…a body?
“There was an attack last night," he started again, repeating what the report already told us. “My warriors were able to take one down."
The warriors stepped aside so we could look at the body and when we did, it was just like any regular wolf in their human form. "We'll, except that this one is a killer.” Kael added.
"And you're sure they didn't have a scent?”
He nodded, "they were like Ghosts…like they were not even there.”
Tristan looked at me, "Just like Luna's brother and…" he trailed off. “Do you think we can catch them using the same method?"
I nodded, “which means we'll have to wait for them to come to us." I replied, “we need to be a step ahead."
Just as I turned to leave, something caught my eyes, making me pause. “What's that?" I asked, pointing to the marking that was showing underneath his shirt.
Everyone paused, trying to find what I was looking at. “Oh, the tattoos? He has a lot of them." He replied, waving it off.
I raised my brows slightly, "wasn't there a marking on the bodies of pack members that were killed?” I said, waiting for him to connect whatever dot was there but he just stared at me like I was speaking a new language, making it obvious he hadn't even bothered reading the report.
“Yes, but we thought it was just random." His Beta replied.
"Random?” I asked, pulling his shirt upward to reveal the tattoo of a moon…only that it was half, the same one that was on the dead pack members. “I don't think so."
“If they were bold enough to make the markings, it means they wanted us to find them." Tristan said, as if he read my thoughts.
If they were bold enough to leave a piece of them behind, it means we weren't dealing with ordinary rogues who were just trying to be seen. But something else entirely…and the thought alone made my skin tick.
We went around the Pack, discussing their new security measures and other Pack matters. The conversation went on for hours until a wave of uneasiness hit me.
I paused, looking at Tristan, who was focused on the plan he was mapping. Kael was restless, pacing up and down in my head. “Mate!" He growled, and I stood up, pushing the table, causing everyone to turn to me.
"Alpha?” Tristan called, his voice heavy with concern. "Are you okay?”
I ignored him as I tried mindlinking Red but all I heard was silence. I was already running towards the car like someone who was possessed, with Tristan following closely behind.
“Please be okay, Red." I thought.
"Alpha!” Xavier called, jolting me back to the present. "It's the Luna…she was poisoned."
The moment the words left his lips, I froze. “Poisoned?" I felt blood drain from my face. But I didn't have time to waste as I got into the driver's seat…Tristan sat in the passenger's seat, yelling orders into the phone while I drove blindly back to the Pack.
Without waiting to park the car properly, I jumped out, running straight to the Pack hospital, where Red was.
“Where is she?" I growled, and members moved out of my way.
Xavier appeared from one of the rooms, “the doctor is attending to her, you…” I didn't want to hear it, as I pushed him aside, opening the door to the room.
Red was lying on the bed, unconscious, with two doctors and nurses running up and down. “Red!" I called, kneeling beside her, taking her hand. “Please be okay." Hoping that by some miracle by some miracle, she would listen to me and open her eyes but nothing happened.
“What's going on? Why isn't she waking up?"
I wasn't trying to hide the fact that I was scared, I would lose my mind if anything happened to her.
Aileen entered, her eyes swollen from all her crying, “I'm sorry," she cried, “one moment she was talking, a-and the next, she was…”
“Tell me what happened…everything.”
