Chapter 56 The Rogues Secret
Zayne's POV
"I've searched for similar poisons, but nothing is coming up.” Xavier said, coming into my office not long after Red left.
My head snapped upward, "Are you sure? I asked.
He nodded, giving me a summary of all known poison and none of it sounded deadly enough to affect me that much…with my Alpha blood, there was a limit to the things that had that kind of effect on me.
“I'm looking into new possibilities…but it's proving to be more difficult. But I'm meeting with the Beta of shadowmoon Pack, hopefully I get something.”
"What about the rogues?”
"They're still insisting that they were looking for their friend who left the Pack a few months ago.” He replied, "they also claimed that they hid their scent because it was easier than explaining why they were there to every pack they've been to.”
Kael snorted, "that was just convenient.” He said,
Even though I was now convinced that they had nothing to do with the shooting, I still find their excuse ridiculous and since he was a Beta, I'm sure he knew that as well. "Find out which pack they're from.”
He nodded before excusing himself to go get started. But before I could even go back to reading through the paperwork, the door opened and my parents entered, looking serious.
I really didn't need this today.
I haven't spoken to them since the last time the both came…separately and I could swear that it didn't look like they would be coming back anytime soon…clearly, I was wrong. Good thing Red wasn't around to hear or see them.
“Mom, dad."
They barely nodded, taking their seat on the couch. I stood up to take the couch opposite them. My mom looked away, leaving my dad to do the talking and I just rolled my eyes, making myself comfortable and hoping that whatever they had to say was fast.
“We heard about the attacks…why didn't you tell us?” My dad asked. "If Aileen hadn't said anything, would you have told us?"
“It was nothing, and I'm okay." I replied, ignoring the question of if I'd have told them if Aileen didn't.
“You're okay?" My mom yelled, "what if you had died?”
Kael snorted, "as if wanting us to mate someone else isn't like sending us to an early grave.” He said.
"I didn't die and I don't plan to.”
But that didn't sit well with her, with either of them. "It's that girl right? She's setting you against me…us, you were not like this before.”
"I didn't have to defend my mate a thousand times before.” I reminded her. "And she has a name…Alyssa, you'll use it when you're referring to her."
My dad cleared his throat as if warning me but I was beyond caring. “We'll come back to that, "have you gathered the information on who is behind the attack?” He asked instead.
I shook my head, "we're still on it…" I debated telling him we were nowhere close to finding out the truth but I was certain he would somehow find a way to bring Red into it.
“If you need my help, let me know."
I nodded. They sat for a few minutes not saying anything but it was obvious whatever they had to say was at the tip of their tongues. When they finally decided they'd had enough of the silence, they chose to leave. But not without making it clear that I needed to apologize and they were still waiting for it.
They were going to be waiting for a long time.
Once they were finally gone, I rested my back against the couch, massaging my temple softly.
"Alpha," Xavier's voice called, “I think you should hear this, the pack doctor came up with some clues that can help us.”
I immediately made my way to the Pack hospital where Xavier was waiting for me. “Alpha…”
"Continue.”
He told us about the poison and how he'd never seen anything like that before. "The only reason why the warrior didn't die is because it only brushed his arm.”
"What are you saying?” I asked, not getting what his point was.
"I'm saying that there most likely was a trace of Hemlock Blossom flower which is mostly used by witches to keep werewolves from shifting into their wolves.”
"Witches?” I asked and he nodded.
"If they were there that night, it means they were also there for that flower.” Xavier said. “We probably interrupted them…hence the attack.”
"That may be it, but I don't think it is." It felt like they were there for us, like they knew exactly where we were going to be and were waiting for us…I just have to prove that.
“I'll continue looking into witches and their locations—”
I felt a familiar movement in my head as if someone was trying to mindlink me, "Alpha,” Mel's familiar voice called and I froze. "It's Luna Alyssa…" I didn't wait to hear the rest before dashing out of the doctor's office. “She went looking for you in the dungeon."
She was going to be the death of me and I meant it literally.
Xavier ran after me as I made my way to the dungeon. Kael was pacing impatiently, so I increased my speed only stopping until my eyes landed on her.
“Get your hands off her," I growled loudly. Red was kneeling beside the rogue, her arms wrapped around him and I could sense her worry even without seeing her face.
He head snapped upward to look at me but she didn't make an attempt to move. “Red," my voice coming out low, controlled and trying so fucking hard to not lose my mind. “Step away from him."
“No." Her response caught me unaware, the tone of her voice reminded me of the first week we meant each and she was still skeptical about anything that had to do with me. I felt a sharp pain at the thought.
“Alyssa, listen to me." Moving close until I was a few feet away from her. "He's going to hurt you.”
I was so close to yanking him away from her. “He's hurt, he needs a doctor.” she said instead.
At this point, I was done, watching her fawn over him like I wasn't a few feet wasn't how I wanted to spend the rest of my day. “He'll get a doctor if I say so, but right now, he's a disaster waiting to happen.
She glared at me, "what he is, is my brother and soon, I won't have one.”
I froze as the words hit me. " Her what?”
