Chapter 52 Double Threat
Zayne's POV
“I've searched everywhere and I mean it literally…but there's no record of any survivors of the Lunara pack, it's as if they never existed.” Xavier said, the dark circles under his eyes were proof that he also hasn't gotten enough sleep.
Searching for anything that would explain Red's power felt impossible and with her dad, the only person she mentioned actually cared about her gone, there was no one to ask questions, which means relying on books. I also didn't want her getting the wrong type of attention, hence why I was choosing to keep it under the covers for now.
I nodded, “and the potion has been made, so we can move tonight." He added. “The warriors are already preparing."
"This better works,” I thought.
Catching whoever this was would provide answers to a lot of the questions I had. For him to know about the trip to the north ridge for the Bloodroot Fern means he has eyes on the inside and then also managing to get into the dungeon silencing the rogue before we could get answers from them was another proof.
I was impressed but his game ended tonight when I lay hands on him
I checked my wristwatch, it was only four, leaving us with a few hours before it was dark enough for us to leave. “Thank you.” I said, and his head snapped towards me.
"I swear Zayne,” he started, calling me by my name which means he was talking to me as my best friend, not Alpha and I wasn't sure which was better. "If you pulled the same thing you did at North ridge, I'm going to kill you myself.”
Kael chuckled, "I'll love to see him try.” he said, rolling his eyes.
"I'll try my best.” He glared at me.
"I'm sure Luna Alyssa would have something to say about that.”
I froze, meeting his gaze and he had the look that said, "do you want to repeat that?” And I really didn't. The look in her eyes when she told me how scared she'd been when she saw the blood, was reason enough for me to not put her in that situation again.
“Maybe I should talk to Aria about…” he glared at me before I finished talking before he left, leaving me to focus on the mountain of paperwork that seems to keep increasing instead of actually reducing.
The hours flew by quickly and soon enough, we were preparing to move.
Just to be safe since we still had no idea who the mole was, I was choosing to go with only a handful of warriors who I trusted.
“Do you have everything?" I asked, once we were ready.
“Yes, Alpha." Tristan replied, but still double checked everything. The warriors, about thirty of them, did the same thing. Then we left.
The cold night air hit my skin once we left the Pack house, moving as quietly as we could. The moon was our only source of light, and good thing it was bright enough. Our night vision would make up for the rest.
Xavier walked beside me and a part of me felt that he was paying more attention to me than the surroundings but I ignored him, knowing he was smart enough to know when to stop. I was convinced that he was following Red's order, so I just let him do his thing.
“Tristan," I called through the mindlink, and he immediately turned to me. “Take some warriors with you, spread them out…I need more ground to be covered.”
"Yes Alpha.”
I told Xavier the same thing and he hesitated before doing it. Taking the remaining warriors with me, I went towards the South border, which was the last place he was seen…more like felt, since no one has actually seen what he looks like.
I got into position, taking cover between two tall trees and once I was certain the others were comfortable, I settled properly.
From everything I knew about the Bloodroot Fern, all we had to do was spray the already prepared potion which was mixed with wolfsbane and watch it do its work. For the first few minutes, no one said anything, the only sound that could be heard was the ones made by forest insects.
Even without saying it, no doubt we were all thinking the same thing…the last time he came was weeks ago, what's the assurance he'd come soon, tonight?
“Did I tell something that stood out for me when you were on your deathbed?" Xavier asked, and I rolled my eyes, he was never going to let that go.
“Luna Alyssa," he continued, not waiting for me to reply. “I can swear she used an Alpha command on me…I can't explain but I swear it happened.” he finished and a proud smile made it way to my face.
I can't believe I missed that.
“She's wearing my mark, and as my mate, we're equals…” I paused, my ears picking up sounds I'm sure didn't come from me.”
"Are you okay, Alpha?”
"Yea…I just thought I heard something.”
I was still talking again when the sound came again, only that it was louder this time. “I hear it too." Xavier said, at the same time Tristan asked if we heard it.
Kael pushed himself to the surface, ready to take over if need be. I wasn't sure why but I still waited…but it didn't feel like the right time.
A muffled scream shot through the night and it was all the sign I needed, as I mindlinked my warriors to move. We marched towards the sound, everyone moved with determination, swift and light.
We searched the nearby surroundings but there was nothing, so we increased the search area. Kael and I were sniffing for anything that smelled foreign and once we found it, we followed it closely and after a few minutes, it led us to an open space where we found a bloodied cloth.
“I found something." I said through the mindlink.
"Me too.” Xavier announced.
I continued along the same trail, and barely a few steps later, my eyes landed on our culprit.
"He's a Beta.” Tristan, who'd join Xavier added and a smirk played on my lips,
Tonight was definitely a good one
