Chapter 47 A Luna's Light
Alyssa's POV
I watched as the car drove away, a part of me going with it, waving until I could no longer see the car, the girls stood by my side also waving. Although Aria was already used to Xavier going away for days on his Beta duties and Aria didn't have anything to worry about, seeing how Tristan's arm was wrapped around her waist.
“They'll be back before you know it, Luna." Aria assured me, holding my hand and leading me back into the pack house.
I nodded, “I know, but it doesn't mean I won't miss him."
She shrugged, “fair." She replied, causing us to laugh, easing some of the tension I was feeling.
"Since this is your first full moon with us,” Aileen started, as we made ourselves comfortable in one of the smaller living rooms. "And my brother isn't around, we have to make it special…something you'll remember.”
The others nodded readily, "I have a few ideas.” Aria said, grinning widely and Tristan groaned loudly.
"I'm not sure if I want to hear it.” He said, "your ideas are worse than my girl's own.”
Aileen's face burned as she snuggled closer to him. "You're lucky I love you.” She murmured, kissing his lips softly. I smiled as I watched both of them, even without trying, they were defying fate. I'm certain the moon goddess was wondering if she made a mistake not pairing them together…a part of me hoped they stayed together forever.
The girls got to work, planning the full moon’s event while I just watched.
Aria's plan wasn't as bad as Tristan thought, it includes having a picnic, a movie night. Aileen's plan included dressing up but seeing how we didn't have all the time in the world, we decided to hold that thought till the next full moon. Tristan looked disappointed at the customer, but I wasn't that curious to ask why.
“So, who are we asking to join us? The more the merrier." Aileen asked.
I turned to Mel, "you should ask your mate to join us.” I told her and her eyes widened.
"Yea, he must feel bad that you're spending most of your time away.” Aria said. "And I think we should meet him as well.”
She looked away, "I-uh…he a-already has plans with his friends." She stuttered, “He's fine with me working with Luna and he understands."
"Is he a warrior as well?” Tristan asked, and she looked taken aback by the question…I dare say she looked uncomfortable talking about him.
I remember that one time we were talking, she mentioned how her ex-boyfriend was her mate's brother. I wondered if it caused some rift between the two of them when they finally got together.
“Why don't we look at other options.” I suggested and they didn't argue, doing just that. Mel gave me a grateful look.
When we all couldn't think of anyone…since we spent almost every hour together, we didn't have any other common friend, we divided the task to get things ready between the five of us.
Aria took control of getting the snacks and drinks ready, while Aileen and Tristan went in search of the tent and everything that we'll need. I was supposed to pick what movies we were going to watch but that wasn't until later, so I made my way to the kitchen.
The Omegas who were preparing dinner quickly moved out of the way. “Luna!" They greeted, “the food is almost ready." The head cook told me, apologizing over and over.
I waved her aside, “I want to bake something, where are the ingredients?” I asked instead.
Her mouth opened, then closed. "I'll have them ready, Luna." She said, before disappearing into a large room I assumed was the store.
While I waited for her to bring the things out, Lori approached me…and I swear she was everywhere, like she had Alyssa's radar that tells her where I was at all times.
“Luna Alyssa," she called, “I was going to come find you…do you have anything planned for the full moon?”
I nodded, "I'm having a picnic with the guys…you can join us if you want to." I found myself saying before I could stop the words from coming out of my mouth.
Her eyes lit up, “I'll like that." She said, just as the head cook returned with everything I needed.
Lori didn't leave, she joined in the baking, asking for directions on what I needed help with. Mel, although still cautious of her, also helped out. Cooking and baking always kept me sane and before now, I did them because I didn't have a choice, but now it was different. I was enjoying it, just like I'd always wanted.
“I can't believe I just did that." Lori laughed, looking at her own batter.
“It's not that hard, once you get a hang of it."
She nodded, “maybe it's because you're a good teacher." She said, and I smiled.
About two hours later, we were done baking and decorating the cake and we went in search of the others. They had finished setting up and all that was left was the moon.
They didn't hide the fact that they'll rather not have Lori here but the cake kept them very much distracted.
The first movie started and all of us laid under the blanket. It would've been so much better if Zayne was here or if my wolf wasn't choosing to remain silent but I didn't let it stop me from having fun.
When midnight finally came, it was the most beautiful sight and unlike other full moons that I spent writhing in pain because my first mate chose someone else, this was pure bliss…but I spoke too soon, because less than an hour later, a sharp pain hit my chest.
“Mate!" Nira, who had been quiet, cried out.
"Luna!” The guys called worriedly, gathering around me.
"Something is wrong with Zayne." I told them, which only increased the tightness in my chest.
I pressed a hand to my chest, trying to soothe the pain, begging the moon goddess to save him. Mindlinking him didn't work, like there was a wall between us. Fear began creeping in, “Zayne, please be okay baby." I cried.
Nothing the guys said or did helped. Aria was trying to mindlink Xavier but it was the same response.
“They're almost here," Tristan announced after a few minutes, “Baby, ask the Pack doctor to come here." He said to Aileen, who did as she was told, her hand trembling.
After what felt like forever and I could no longer feel my body, Xavier's familiar Brown wolf came into view and on his back was Zayne…my legs weakened at the sight. “No…no.”
He was taken to the room where the Pack doctor began working on him. His eyes were closed and his pulse was weak. I threw myself beside him, taking his hands in mine.
“Baby, please…” I begged him. I wasn't sure what I was begging for.
The doctor stood up to face Xavier, “he’s dying,” he said, making my body freeze. "I've never seen any poison like this before…”
I jumped in front of him, "are you saying you can't heal him?” I yelled. "He's your Alpha, do something!”
"Maybe you should stay out–" Tristan started, but my head snapped to him, shooting him a glare. “Do something, please…anything.”
The wound on his chest was becoming wider if possible and he was losing more blood. And the doctor, with Aileen's help, was trying everything they could but nothing seemed to be working.
“Baby, this isn't what you promised," I cried. “We haven't gone on a real date…you promised.”
The guys all stood there watching me without knowing what else to do. But I wasn't going to watch the first person who saw beyond my position, who gave me another chance to believe in love and gave me a family like I've always wanted, I wasn't going to watch him die.
“Find the type of poison…I don't care how long it takes.” I ordered, my voice coming out stronger than I imagined.
"Yes Luna.” Tristan said, excusing himself.
"I can't feel a pulse Luna,” the doctor said, choosing his words carefully. "I'm sorry…"
I felt Nira taking over, and was beside the doctor is seconds, “don't you fucking complete that statement," I growled, “my mate is alive and if you can't help, get the fuck out of here."
His eyes widened, murmuring something that sounded like an apology before dashing out of the room.
I returned to Zayne's side just as I heard him gasping for breath.
“What's going on?" I asked no one in particular.
“Put your hand over his wound." Nira said.
“What? Why?"
“Now's not the time for questions." She replied, a final tone in her voice, and I didn't argue this time, doing exactly as she commanded, much to the confusion of both Xavier and Aria, who was sobbing in his arms.
It was probably my imagination, but my hand began to glow…my eyes widened,
“What the actual fuck?"
