Chapter 10 Guilt And Sparks
Chapter 10
Alyssa's POV
I let Zayne lead me away from the crowd and he didn't stop until we got to a large office, which no doubt belonged to him. I couldn't bring myself to look around, the conversation…if I could call it that, with the girl kept playing in my head.
“What did she mean by the one I killed?" I thought.
It didn't make sense…a lot of things didn't, but I would never hurt anyone. I couldn't even defend myself against the bullies back home, and now she was talking about murder.
"Don't listen to her,” Zayne said, once I was seated comfortably on the couch in the office. "She's…"
I didn't let him finish, “What is she talking about? Did I kill someone?" I asked him.
The details of the night when I entered his pack weren't fully formed but the more I thought about it, the more flashes of that night started to return but nothing screamed murder. I do remember the men who were talking about me like I was a piece of meat ready to be devoured but Xavier came to my rescue before they did anything.
“Why aren't you saying anything?" I asked, when he didn't reply.
He turned to face me, his hand caressing my face softly and instead of sparks, I felt dread wash over me. “She wasn't lying."
“You were only defending yourself," he said quietly. "Leon is known for being…" he paused, his hand forming a fist. I didn't miss the way his jaw tightened.
“He deserved it, Red." His voice sounded distant, “I would've torn him to pieces if he was still alive."
It didn't sound like he was just saying it to make me feel better about killing someone. My head was spinning at just the thought and my wolf was choosing to remain quiet…thinking back now, I could swear that she was going to tell me something.
“Oh my god! I-I k-killed someone." I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Heyy…" Zayne called. “He had it coming all this while…” I didn't wait for him to finish before I pushed myself up from the couch.
Zayne was up almost immediately but I shook my head. "I want to clear my head for a few minutes…alone.” I told him.
He hesitated before nodding and I made my way out of the office. I had no idea where I was going but I kept walking, not paying attention to the Pack members who greeted me…it was only a matter of time before everyone in the Pack knew about it and insisted they didn't want a Luna like me.
“Don't do that…” my wolf said, deciding to show herself again.
"Why didn't you tell me?” I asked, my voice trembling "I looked like a fool in front of her.”
"I tried," she said softly, “but I also didn't want you to beat yourself up…you already have a lot on your plate.” She replied.
"And he deserved it," she growled loudly, her eyes flashing in my mind, “that idiot put his hand on us.”
Somehow, she managed to convince me that nothing about that night was my fault and it was the first time I was shifting into my wolf, so I barely had control over what happened that day. And if he'd listened to Xavier and took me back to the dungeon, he would still be alive.
“Now, let's go back to our mate." She demanded, “being away from him is messing with my mind."
I rolled my eyes, "you're a wolf, act like one.” I told her, a small smile appeared on my face, but she just snorted in response.
“Why do you think I haven't jumped his bones yet?”
I blocked her.
When I finally came back to my senses, I realized I had gone a good distance from the pack house and it was already getting dark, so I decided to return.
The walk back was faster, and I actually felt better than I did earlier. This time, I didn't miss the road as I pushed the door to Zayne's office but he wasn't there. Instead, Aria sat on the couch and once she saw me, she jumped to her feet and rushed towards me.
“I heard what happened," she started, “Are you okay?" Her eyes scanned my body for any type of injury, her expression tight with worry.
Her actions made me smile. Since my dad died, no one had fused over me like that…no one cared. “I'm fine," I assured her, turning around so she could take a good look at my body.
“Lori can be a lot…even before Leon died.” She said, and my head snapped upward to meet her eyes as I waited for her to continue.
“They are twins,” she started, "but Leon loved taking advantage of the fact that his family is close to Alpha Zayne's family and sleeping with girls and then dumping them…he thought he would get away with…” she trailed off.
But I knew where she was headed. "Trust me Luna, when I say you did a lot of people a favour.”
When she put it this way, the guilt I was feeling immediately disappeared and it felt like a weight was lifted off of me.
“Where's Alpha Zayne?" I asked after a few minutes. It felt weird calling him by his title.
As if hearing his name, the door flung open, revealing the said person. “I'm right here, and Red, it's Zayne or Baby to you.” He said, coming towards me. The shirt he had on was replaced by a round neck and his hair was wet, like he just stepped out of the shower.
I couldn't take my eyes off him and with every step he took, I lost my ability to speak or make a full sentence.
He looked too good for my peace of mind, water still glistened on his neck, a single drop sliding down to where the fabric of his shirt clung to his chest. The scent of his soap hit me next, clean and warm with a hint of pine, and my wolf all but purred.
“Say something,” she urged.
“I—uh…” My mouth opened, but words completely failed me. Fantastic! He wasn't even doing anything to me, yet my body was betraying me.
A knowing smirk tugged at his lips as he stopped in front of me, close enough that the air between us thickened. “Red, are you okay?” he asked softly.
Aria coughed — loudly. “Okay, I’m just… gonna go.”
I didn’t even look her way as the door closed behind her. My focus stayed locked on Zayne, who now looked far too pleased with himself.
“You're doing a great job." My wolf mocked me.
"Hey!” Zayne called, snapping his fingers in front of my face, jolting me back to the present. "Where did you go?” He asked, his voice light.
“Wouldn't you like to know…I-I mean, I was just outside.”
His brows arched, amusement flickering through his eyes, “So…”
Knowing where this was going, I quickly changed the subject. "Did you take your bath again?” I asked him, and it was his turn to become speechless.
