Chapter 185 The Hunt Into The Storm

Chapter 185 The Hunt Into The Storm
The storm started subtly.

A shift in the wind.

A sharpness in the air.

The kind of change Siberian wolves noticed instinctively long before human senses could catch up.

By midday the forest already looked wrong.

Too still.

Snow drifted heavily through towering black pines while gray clouds swallowed the sky overhead, turning the world colorless beneath thickening snowfall.

We tracked one of the escaped V-Canis north along an old hunting route buried beneath ice and fresh snow.

Another survivor from the underground facility beneath the lake.

Or maybe not a survivor anymore.

The reports from nearby patrols described livestock torn apart near the outer villages and strange movement patterns along the eastern forest ridge.

Not fully feral.

Not fully human either.

That was becoming the most terrifying category of all.

The pack moved silently through the forest.

Darius ahead with Viktor and Igor while Blood Guards spread outward between the trees in shifting formation.

Irina tracked beside me with one rifle slung across her back while Mikhail moved farther west checking scent trails beneath the snowfall.

Even the twins stayed behind at the estate this time.

Mostly because Soraya threatened to physically chain them to furniture.

Reasonable.

I adjusted the fur-lined collar tighter around my throat while snow crunched beneath my boots.

The cold today felt vicious.

The kind that bit exposed skin raw within minutes.

The deeper into the forest we moved

The quieter everyone became.

Not fear.

Instinct.

Predators hunting something dangerous.

I crouched beside a shattered tree trunk while Viktor examined claw marks carved deep into the bark.

Not wolf marks.

Too narrow.

Too deliberate.

The V-Canis hybrids damaged things accidentally through strength.

This

This looked intentional.

Like a warning.

Darius noticed me studying the markings.

“What?”

I touched the edge of one gouge lightly.

“It’s controlling itself.”

The older wolves exchanged sharp glances instantly.

That mattered.

Human restraint.

Predatory instinct.

Together.

Exactly what Calder had been trying to create.

The snow thickened harder around us.

Wind screamed through the trees violently enough to shake entire branches loose overhead.

Visibility dropped steadily with every passing minute.

Irina cursed softly beneath her breath.

“Storm’s turning.”

No one argued.

Siberian storms weren’t weather.

They were survival events.

Darius glanced upward once toward the darkening sky.

“We finish this quickly.”

The pack spread wider after that.

Faster movement.

More ground covered.

The transformed human couldn’t be allowed to reach another village.

Or another convoy.

Or children.

God.

I still remembered the thing beneath the lake staring through containment glass with human eyes.

The trail became clearer the farther north we moved.

Blood.

Footprints.

Signs of unstable shifting carved across the frozen terrain.

Sometimes the tracks looked human.

Then suddenly clawed.

Then human again.

The instability itself looked painful.

My beast stirred uneasily beneath my ribs.

Not aggression.

Recognition.

I wondered if the transformed humans felt themselves disappearing while it happened.

Or if instinct swallowed thought entirely.

The wind howled harder.

Snow exploded sideways through the forest until even the Blood Guards became difficult to see between the trees.

Then suddenly

Static crackled violently through the comms.

“Movement east”

The transmission cut sharply.

Another voice broke through.

“Thermal reading near the ridge!”

Viktor signaled instantly.

The pack split without hesitation.

Wolves veered east through the storm while Blood Guards spread south toward the ridge line.

Controlled chaos.

Predators adapting in motion.

I turned sharply toward Darius through the swirling snow.

“You heard that?”

“Yes.”

The storm swallowed half the world around us now.

Visibility had dropped to maybe twenty feet.

The others disappeared between the trees almost immediately.

Not panic.

No one here panicked easily.

This was how packs hunted.

Adaptation.

Movement.

Instinct.

But somewhere during the shift in formation—

Darius and I ended up alone.

Not truly alone.

The others remained nearby somewhere beyond the storm.

Still

The forest suddenly felt enormous.

White.

Silent.

Snow blasted violently through the pines while the wind screamed hard enough to drown distant movement completely.

I looked toward Darius automatically.

He was already watching me.

No concern.

No hesitation.

Just instinctive recalculation.

Together.

Always together.

“We stay north,” he said calmly.

I nodded once.

No debate needed.

We moved immediately.

The snow reached nearly mid-calf now in some places while the storm erased tracks almost as quickly as they formed. Darius stayed slightly ahead through the trees, his senses sharper in conditions like this, while I listened for movement beneath the roar of the wind.

The cold bit viciously through my gloves.

Branches creaked overhead beneath thickening ice.

And somewhere far ahead

A scream echoed faintly through the storm.

Human.

My pulse spiked instantly.

Darius stopped hard enough snow sprayed around his boots.

“You heard that.”

Not a question.

“Yes.”

The sound came again.

Closer this time.

Broken.

Animalistic.

Not entirely human anymore.

We moved faster.

The forest blurred around us beneath whipping snow while my beast pushed harder beneath my skin, senses sharpening instinctively despite the weather.

The transformed human smelled wrong.

Blood.

Fear.

Chemical decay.

And underneath it

Pain.

God.

Pain.

We found the first body near a frozen stream half buried beneath snowfall.

Dead.

Not mauled.

Broken.

The man’s neck twisted unnaturally while claw marks shredded the snow around him.

Recent kill.

Darius crouched briefly beside the corpse.

“Villager.”

My stomach tightened.

No feeding marks again.

That pattern continued.

Controlled aggression.

Targeted violence.

The thing they hunted wasn’t fully feral.

That somehow made it worse.

The storm intensified violently overhead.

Snow now slammed sideways hard enough to sting exposed skin while tree lines vanished entirely into white haze beyond a few feet.

Darius reached for my wrist instinctively.

Not romantic.

Practical.

Grounding.

Keeping contact in zero visibility.

I curled my fingers around his immediately.

Warm.

Steady.

Mine.

The world disappeared around us after that.

Only snow.

Only wind.

Only each other moving through endless white forest.

And strangely—

I wasn’t afraid

Not because the situation wasn’t dangerous.

Because Darius moved beside me like certainty itself.

Every instinct between us aligned naturally now.

No second-guessing.

No hesitation.

Predators surviving together.

The scream came again suddenly

Much closer.

Then

Movement exploded through the storm ahead.

Fast.

Humanoid.

Wrong.

The transformed human burst through the snow-covered trees barely fifteen feet ahead of us.

And for one horrible second

I saw the person still trapped inside it.

Human eyes.

Terrified.

Then the creature screamed and lunged straight toward us through the storm.
