27. I'LL DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT
ASHER
As I made my way to Daemon's room, a million thoughts ran through my mind. Why did he just abandon Jayda there like she was a nobody.
This was Jayda, the healer he brought, with his own hands. Was he just going to ignore them as they treated her like a rabid dog in a rat infested dungeon just slightly away from the palace he lived in?
I knocked on his door, solid repetitive knocks that would certainly meet his ears. Soon the door clicked open.
His face fell immediately he looked at me and I could tell that he knew why I was here, or at least had an idea why.
“Daemon -”
“Don't start Asher” he defended. I held back the urge to scoff.
“How could you let them lock her up like that?” I asked, my voice growing increasingly louder.
Daemon sighed, placing his hands on his waist. “You say it like there was anything I could do about it? If it was not for me she would be dead by now”
“There was more you could do and you know it” I argued.
“But the pack is getting better now” he retorted, packing around. My eyes narrowed on him, following him around“
He sighed, his shoulders loosening. “So what do you want me to do, she's a witch , it's against the law but I still let my father tamper justice with mercy” he suddenly stated, his voice taking a sharper tone.
“Don't give me that look, you as well I know that there was nothing more I could do” he complained, running his fingers through his hair. “You're acting like Jayda herself is all that innocent” he added.
“Okay, you tell me, what did Jayda do wrong?” I asked with crossed arms.
He scoffed, “for starters she beat my mate almost into a coma and the woman is a witch we can't just trust her wholeheartedly. Have you asked yourself what a witch was doing here in the first place?”
“What?!” I spat. “So that's your big reason? Because she beat up Cassandra?”
I shook my head and continued. “If she didn't do it, somebody else would.”
“Cassandra is my mate!” he cautioned, turning around to look me in the eyes.
I stepped forward, “And she can also be obnoxious.”
“Did you even bother finding out what transpired between them? Ever tried asking why she beat Cassandra to that point?”
“What do you mean?” He asked.
“Cassandra is very stubborn, overbearing and annoying. She probably did something to Jayda to get her to react that way, you should know Cass better than anyone else.”
“Listen to yourself Asher, what could justify beating someone to that point? Cassandra couldn't walk properly for a whole day.”
“With the way they're treating Jayda I'm not even sure she can walk properly at all.”
Daemon shook his head and walked away, intentionally brushing past my shoulders. I staggered a few steps back and then turned to look at his retreating back.
I let out a soft breath. If Daemon wasn't going to do anything, then I would.
******
It was dusk, the sun had begun to set. I stood by the window to my room, arms folded behind me as I stared skywards.
Darkness crept into the scenery. I needed this darkness for what I was about to do.
I turned around and headed to my drawer. I picked up a mask and slipped it on, taking a moment to gaze at myself in the mirror.
I was wearing an all black outfit, to blend into the night as inconspicuously as possible.
With a solid resolve I was ready to leave. Suddenly there was a knock on my door. My heart skipped a beat. I immediately leapt behind a wall, flattening my back against it.
I tried to steady my breathing as I strained my ears.
“Asher?” Daemon called.
What was he doing here? I though. What if he didn't understand and wanted to stop me from doing what I was about to do?
I remained silent. “I don't know if you're inside or not, but if you are… we need to talk”
They was nothing but pin drop silence. “Okay” he muttered and then back away. His footsteps began to fade until he was gone.
I still waited a few minutes extra before moving. I took a glance at the darkness outside, it was now or never.
I slide my window open and jumped out, sliding it back closed. I made my way towards the dungeons as fast as my feet could carry me.
I was like a streak in the dark, light on my feet as I approached the dungeons. They were just behind the palace, underground.
One wrong move and the palace guards would be here in no time. I had to be cautious.
As I descended the aged rocky slabs of stairs, the smell of metallic dungeon ells hit my nostrils. This place was horrible, and I couldn't imagine what Jayda was going through here.
At some point, the light from outside could no longer penetrate and the place was pitch black. I relied almost exclusively on my senses of touch to guide me through the tunnels.
Besides this wasn't the first time that I've been here so it wasn't so hard to navigate. The whispers of a hushed conversation met my ears, causing me to halt.
From the corner, the warm orange glow of lamps flickered in and out of my vision. I slowly inched closer and peeped.
Two guards standing near Jayda’s cell were having a hearty conversation. The sound of the laughter echoed through the small space.
I watched them, zeroing in on them like a predator preparing to attack. It was now or never.
I could feel the adrenaline surge through my veins as I lunged forward. I zeroed in on them as my pupils dilated. The first guard, sensing my presence turned around but was instantly hit with a powerful blow to the neck, knocking him out instantly.
His lamp fell to the ground and cracked, going off. The other gaurd swung but I dodged, driving my knee into his ribs and the striking the base of his neck. He slumped unconscious before me.
I searched his waist for the key and took it. I turned around and opened Jayda’s cell, her eyes widened when she saw me.
I peeled off my mask. “Itme Asher,” I said as I opened the gates of the dungeon. I went down on one knee and unlocked the chains that bonded her. They fell to the ground with a metallic rattle. She removed the muzzle on her face.
“Asher? What are you doing? You will get yourself killed” she croaked. I offered her an hand as she got on her feet, we grabbed the lamp of the other gard and made our way out.
"Its not my first time going against the rules, that is probably why Greyson hates me, come let's go"
“Where are we going?” She asked.
“For now I have to hide you in my room, nobody would think to look for you there.”
She nodded. “Jayda I know you want to escape, get as far away as possible from this place, but if you try to escape from my room, they'll catch you and kill you. We have to come up with a plan okay?”
“Okay” she replied reluctantly, her voice barely above a whisper.
As we burst out through the entrance, the sound of approaching footsteps met my ears. I extended my arms and stepped forward.
Daemon's POV
As soon as I stepped out of the corner, I caught Asher dressed like a thief and beside him was Jayda, who looked scared to the bones.
“What the hell are you two doing here?!” I barked angrily.
“I'm breaking her out” Asher said unapologetically.
“Asher what has gotten into you? Defying the alpha? Do you wish to sign your death wish?!” I yelled at him.
He stepped forward, “I'll only be signing it if the alpha finds out and you know I have done a lot worse"
My chest tightened when I registered what he was trying to imply. I looked between him and Jayda.
“Asher you shouldn't have done this, this is way worse than whatever you think you have done, I won't be able to back you up this time” I whispered.
“Don't give me that, I'm doing what you're supposed to be doing. Saving her”
“I am the next in line to become alpha I cannot run around breaking laws like this” I countered.
“If you're heartless enough to leave the one person that saved your pack from possible extinction, rotting in the dungeons. Then you're not worthy to be an alpha.”
I felt my resolve weaken. I exhaled sharply, taking a step backwards. “Where are you taking her?” I asked.
“To my room, it's the last place they would think is looking for her.”
I looked between the two of them. “You two should leave now, before some guards arrive”
I stepped aside as they walked passed me. I couldn't help but trail then with my eyes. Asher what have you done?
I headed back to my chamber with my raging thoughts. I clicked open the door and plopped down on my bed.
The cool breeze from the window was soothing as I stared at my ceiling. Then, like a drop of ink in a glass of clear water, an ugly thought disrupted my mind.
I began to make up images of Asher and Jayda sleeping together. I shook my head, trying to dispel the ungodly thoughts.
He was just trying to help her, something I failed to do. I turned on my sides I shut my eyes, but even after several minutes I still managed to unwilling evade sleep.
I stirred and turned but I felt restless. I felt my heart beating fasting, sweat precipitating on my forehead despise the coolnes of the night.
I couldn't help but get up and make my way to the bathroom to splash my face with some water.
Even that didn't help me. I still felt alert, with all my senses sharpened.
I didn't realise when time passed and it was already dawn. I peeled off my blaby, I was slightly angry about the fact that I didn't get up to thirty whole minutes of sleep.
I stepped out of my room and made my way down the hallway, I didn't get too far when I heard sounds coming from a distance.
Curious, I terminated my appointment with the horses in the stables and turned around. As I drew closer I realised that it was the guards and my father Alpha Greyson.
“What?! He bellowed, the guards kneeling before him began to shiver. “How could you let her escape?!”
“A man dressed in all black attacked us. We couldn't see his face, he was quick and he knocked us out” one of the guards explained with a shaky voice.
A growl escaped from my father's throat. He lunged forward and dug his claws into the throat of one of the guards, causing him to slump dead on the spot.
He turned to the other one, “I give you twenty four hours to find her, else your fate will be worse than his” Greyson said, with blood dripping from his hands.
