Chapter 135 Run!
Chapter 135 Run!
We heard hurried footsteps entering the bus. Nana looked nervous and immediately greeted Wanda.
"My Queen! There's a problem in the cell!" Nana announced loudly.
Why? Why would Nana say that? What did she mean? Could she be talking about Elijah's escape?
"You must see him at once, my queen!" Nana urged. "Now!"
Wanda's face showed shock. "What?! How is that possible?"
She turned away from me and hurried toward the door. I saw Nana whisper something to the bus driver, and the engine roared to life.
Wanda stopped abruptly and glared at the driver. "I never said you could leave! Stop the engine; that's an order!"
"We don't take orders from a rogue wolf!" Nana's voice thundered from inside the bus.
My eyes widened as I saw Nana grab Wanda and throw them both out of the bus. The bus sped off, and all I could see was Nana and Wanda rolling on the ground.
The bus sped toward the palace gates, putting the rogue wolves on high alert. They tried to hunt us down. We crashed through the gate at full speed, making a huge impact.
The puppies screamed in fear! Some even fell to the floor.
As we escaped the rogue wolves, I had a terrible thought... Nana might not have survived.
She had sacrificed herself so that we could escape the palace.
"Damn it! Why did you do this, Nana?" I cursed, anger and grief swirling inside me.
I hated that she threw away her life when there was still a chance for her to survive if she had just held on a little longer.
"No... Nana..." I started to sob.
"We just have to pray that she's still alive."
I turned to Michael. "She's better off dead than being tortured alive."
"No! She must live and endure! Because we're going to attack the palace soon! You, me, Elijah, and Alpha Jeremy! We must act now!"
My tears stopped as if Michael had hit me with reality.
He was right. Sitting here and grieving for those who sacrificed for me wouldn't bring them justice.
"All right," I nodded. "I'll attack the palace!"
The rogue wolves spread throughout the town, looking for us. Victoria looked heartbroken at leaving her home, but it was for her safety. I couldn't bear to lose anyone else.
Even though my relationship with Victoria hadn't always been good.
At the same time as yesterday, we arrived at the alley where we were supposed to meet Victoria's grandson.
A thick tension hung in the air. We could feel the menacing presence of the rogue wolves all over town.
"I'm too old for this. Go ahead and take my grandson," Victoria said weakly.
"Do you choose death, Beta Victoria?" Michael looked at her in disbelief. "My father is much older than you, but age is just a number to him."
"Your father was a great Alpha in his day."
"And you were a Beta."
I never knew Victoria's story as a Beta. Especially since she was a she-wolf, it was rare. Well, except for Elena, because she was part of the royal family and was given the title.
"That was a long time ago, Michael." Victoria let out a tired sigh.
"You were the elite commander sworn to protect the royal family," Michael scoffed. "You were supposed to protect Princess Imogen and her daughter."
"But I failed! When my Alpha was slaughtered by Edison, I gave up! Do you know how it feels to fail? I don't deserve to be called a Beta anymore!"
So... Victoria, who is supposed to be Elijah's mentor, was once the commander of the Royal Guard? The one who was supposed to protect my mother and me?
"If you want to make up for your failure, you must stay alive!" Michael said firmly. "Queen Aurora is still alive, Victoria! You know damn well that the impostor in the palace isn't the real queen!"
"How do you know she's alive? She was just a baby when the massacre took place! I doubt she's even in this world!" Victoria snarled, frustration in her voice.
Their argument was cut short when we heard hurried footsteps approaching.
A young wolf, about the same age as Michael and me, came running toward us. He froze in shock when he saw me and Michael standing with Victoria.
"Grandma!" he hissed, his claws outstretched as he prepared to attack us.
"No! They're with me, Tobi! This is Delilah and Michael!" Victoria stopped him.
"Delilah? The one King Elijah wants to make his queen?" His eyes locked on me, almost unblinking. "What is she doing here, Grandma?"
"Saving your king," Michael grumbled. "We're doing something instead of hiding."
Tobi immediately shifted his focus to Michael. "Well, we're also trying to save King Elijah! But we're being hunted as well."
"Enough bickering. Tobi, take us to the hideout. They need to be safe and get to Pinecrest."
Tobi sighed deeply and nodded. "We have to be careful. Rogue wolves are everywhere. I can hardly avoid them myself."
He stepped forward, leading the way, while we followed close behind.
A distant howl echoed through the air, followed by another.
A shiver ran down my spine.
We moved quickly through the alleys, but the unease clawed at me. It felt as if the rogue wolves were closing in on us.
"We're almost there," Tobi whispered.
One more turn, and we'd be safe.
But then a foul stench filled my nose.
Dark figures jumped onto the rooftops on either side of us. Then, one by one, they fell, blocking our path. A dozen rogue wolves surrounded us.
Their low growls rumbled through the alley. If one of them signaled an attack, we were dead.
"Queen Wanda will be pleased!" sneered one.
"Finish them quickly! These weak wolves have no chance against us!"
Michael stepped in front of me and shielded my body. There were only four of us; if we had to fight a dozen of them, we wouldn't stand a chance.
Not to mention the other rogue wolves hunting Michael and me. They could come at any moment! I didn't want my life to end here!
"Go!" Victoria shouted. "Leave them to me! Tobi, go! Take Delilah and Michael with you!"
"No, Grandma!!"
Then I saw Victoria turn into a vast, beautiful, light gray wolf. Her thick, bushy tail swayed behind her.
Victoria lunged and hit a rogue wolf that hadn't shifted yet. Then she jumped onto the rooftops, luring the rogue wolves to chase after her.
We got away because of Victoria.
"Grandma!" Tobi cried out.
Michael grabbed Tobi's shoulder. "Do you want to die here after your grandmother sacrificed herself for us?"
