Valerie

Last night was the best night of my entire life. I went to the club to hang out with some friends and distract myself from my everyday problems. What I didn't expect was to leave with someone. To go back to his place and have the best sex of my entire life. I felt so connected to Derek, it was strange. I would never sleep with someone on a first date, let alone after a two-minute encounter at a nightclub! But everything about him drew me in. His looks, his voice, his cologne, his touch, especially his touch.

I flipped over, staring at the most gorgeous man I had ever laid my eyes on. Now that daylight was peaking through the window and I was no longer tipsy, I was able to get a good look at all of his features. He screamed masculinity, something I was wildly attracted to. He was breathing deeply, still sound asleep from our late night of debauchery. The sheets fell around his waist, leaving his impeccable torso wide open. I wanted to lick his chiseled abs, again. I settled for snuggling into his side. I wonder if he would want my number? Maybe we could meet for coffee or something. Hell, I would even be down for another night like last night with this man. My legs were still shaky and my center still throbbing from his repeated intrusion.

My less than pure thoughts were interrupted when something caught my eye. A scar a few inches thick on his side, and another on his shoulder blade. I sat up, taking a closer look. He had many old wounds actually. What did he do to get all of these? My mind began conjuring up a hundred awful reasons as to why he would have gotten all of these. Gang member? Ex prison? Mercinary? Hit man? I can't deal with this. No baggage for me, thank you very much, no matter how mindblowing the sex was. I was finally getting into a better place in my life and I wasn't going to blow it by pursuing someone with major issues. I quickly snuck out of bed, grabbing my clothing and preparing for the walk of shame. My heart ran the show more than a few times and look where that landed me. Time to let my brain take the lead. I carefully crept out of the room, taking one last lingering look from the doorway before grabbing a cab and heading back home.

Derek

I woke up feeling well rested for the first time in months, no, years. Was I dreaming last night? What happened? I had a mild headache, undoubtedly from the copious amounts of alcohol I consumed last night. I remember working late, Jeff coming to the office, going to the nightclub, lots of drinks...a few women...and her. Valerie. She couldn't have possibly been my mate, she was human if I'm not mistaken, which I hardly ever am these days.

"She was our mate." Dean chimed in, still feeling well satisfied.

"How can you be so sure?"

"How are you not sure? She smelled heavenly, sparks erupted wherever we touched, we connected with her and she gave us the best sex of our entire life." He added. Goddess, if I could see him now, he would probably be lounging in bed smoking a cigar with a smug look on his face.

I sat up in bed, throwing my feet over the edge, grabbing my phone and checking my messages. I was shocked to see that I had slept in late, it was almost eleven am. Shit. I had a mountain of paperwork to get through. Most of my messages were from Jeff, one from my Delta, Matt, about the training schedule, and a missed call from the council. Today was already turning out to be shitty. Maybe I should just go back to bed. I stood up and headed to the bathroom, stepping on something on the way. I bent down and picked up a pair of cat ears. My Kittens. Flashbacks from last night flew through my head. Goddess, she was perfect. After rubbing one out in the shower, I made my way over to the office, preparing myself to put out fires.

"There you are! How was last night?" Jeff patted me on the back, falling in step with me as I made my way to my office.

My grim expression turned up for a moment at the thought of last night. "It exceeded my expectations." I smirked.

"Way to hit it man!" Jeff said coyly. "Listen, I hate to spoil your morning, but there is something you need to know-"

"King Derek, how nice of you to join us." Councilman Howard said, unamused, standing in my doorway.

"Councilman, what an unexpected surprise. What brings you here?"

"Don't play dumb boy, you know why we are here." He said, stepping back inside my office.

I followed him in. The rest of the council were spread out in the room, all except my brother-in-law, King Edward, who was an exception. At least until his twins became the reigning kings, which would be in the next few years now. I set my things down on my desk, preparing myself for the scolding I was about to receive.

"You haven't chosen a mate," Councilwoman Leslie announced.

"Obviously," I retorted, not in the mood for games.

"You would be wise to change your tone, boy." Councilman Charles said, raising his voice.

"Why must I choose a mate? Am I not a worthy enough king?" I addressed the room.

"It will strengthen your already weakened kingdom. We have given you enough time to find your mate or choose another. Time is nearly up. You have one year to pick your Luna and Queen or we will pick for you." Councilman Howard said, leaving no room for debate. He, along with the rest of the council, stood and filed out of my office. "One year," he reiterated, before slamming my office door shut. Shit. I only had one year to find my mate? It took some wolves a lifetime!

"We have already found our mate," Dean noted, as if I were stupid.

"We were drunk, that wasn't her."

"Keep living in denial then." He said annoyingly.

Goddess my wolf could drive me up a wall sometimes. I stared at the mountain of work piled up in front of me, hating today more and more. I decided to start with the warriors patrol schedule that somehow got massively fucked up. It took the better part of the day to complete but I had finished the schedule for the full month, so I shouldn't have to deal with that again. I would have Matt take over scheduling from now on. I spent the rest of my day working on paperwork pertaining to my company, Anderson Trading Co.

"Alpha? You wanted to see me?" Trish knocked at my door.

"Come in." I said, my eyes still glued to the paperwork in front of me.

"Is everything okay?" She sat down in the chair across from me.

"Yes, well no. I need your help. I need an assistant. Someone who can keep track of my schedule and messages and maybe even bring me coffee. Do you think you could hire someone?" I peered up from my papers.

"Absolutely!" She breathed a sigh of relief, flipping her blond hair over her shoulder. "Anything else?" She asked.

"No, that will be all." I dismissed her. She stood, her petite stature barely making it over my pile of papers as she headed for the door. "Thank you." I added just as she left, I saw her hand waive behind her in acknowledgment. Good. One less thing to worry about.

I decided now was as good of a time as any for lunch, or maybe even dinner. I lost track of time again today. I headed into the break room to see what I could scrounge up. The break room was quite large, and was able to hold most if not all of our employees at once. Attached to it was a small kitchen. Nothing too fancy, a refrigerator filled with some questionable forgotten lunches, cupboards filed with mixed-matched tupperware, plates, and coffee mugs, and, of course, a very abused looking microwave and toaster. There was one cabinet that was filled with random left-behind non-perishables and snacks. Maybe I could luck out there today. I grabbed the most edible looking items from the mix and went back to my office to work.

Did I ever get Valerie's number last night? I thought to myself on my way back. I pulled out my phone and searched through my contacts, disappointed at the lack of results. No, I should be thinking about her. I need to pick a chosen mate.

"We need to find Valerie. She is our mate." Dean pushed.

"We don't know anything about her, nor do we have the time to go searching for her. She was a good lay and that's it." I said, putting my foot down.

Dean ignored me for the rest of the week.
