Chapter 145 What the Bond Finally Revealed

Chapter 145 What the Bond Finally Revealed
~ Allene's POV ~

I could not stop thinking about everything that had happened over the past several days as I sat alone inside the rebuilt cabin. Every new report seemed to bring another problem connected to my name instead of another step toward peace.

The request from the human authorities still waited for an answer. The demand that I leave Dravik under another Alpha's supervision had only made the situation worse.

No matter where I looked, someone wanted to decide my future. Some wanted to protect me, while others wanted to control me.

I rested my forehead against my folded hands and closed my eyes. For the first time in many months, I felt genuinely tired of being the center of everyone's fears.

I had never asked to become Moonbound. I had only wanted to help people as a diplomat.

Now every decision I made seemed to affect wolves, humans, councils, and territories. The weight of those expectations followed me everywhere I went.

I thought about Caelen more than anyone else. Every attack aimed at me eventually became another burden he carried.

He defended me against other Alphas. He argued with councils because of me.

He faced criticism from wolves who questioned his judgment. Even human officials had begun using our relationship as another reason to pressure him.

The thought refused to leave my mind. Maybe loving me had only made his life harder.

I immediately hated myself for thinking that way. Even so, the idea continued returning.

If I left Dravik for a short time, perhaps some of that pressure would disappear. Perhaps people would stop using me as a reason to challenge him.

I stood and quietly walked toward the bedroom. My intention was not to disappear forever.

I only wanted enough distance for the arguments to calm down. A few weeks away might give everyone time to think more clearly.

I opened the wardrobe and reached for a small travel bag. My movements remained slow because I still questioned whether I was making the right decision.

I placed a few clothes inside without making much noise. I had no destination planned yet.

The door behind me opened before I could continue. I turned immediately and found Caelen standing in the doorway.

He looked from me to the travel bag without saying anything at first. The silence between us felt heavier than any argument.

"What are you doing?" he asked quietly.

I looked down at the bag before answering. Suddenly I found it difficult to explain something that had seemed reasonable only moments earlier.

"I was thinking about leaving for a little while," I admitted. "Only until things settle down."

His expression did not harden with anger. Instead, I saw something much more painful.

"You were going to leave?" he asked.

"I wasn't trying to run away," I replied quickly. "I thought maybe if I wasn't here, people would stop coming after you because of me."

He slowly walked into the room until only a few steps separated us. His eyes never left mine.

"Do you really believe that would solve anything?" he asked.

"I don't know," I admitted. "I only know everything keeps getting worse."

He looked at the travel bag again before taking a slow breath. When he spoke, his voice remained calm despite the emotion behind it.

"I've been trying very hard not to say certain things," he admitted.

I waited quietly because I could tell he needed to continue. Whatever he had been carrying had become too heavy to hide any longer.

"I kept telling myself that I had to think like an Alpha first," he said. "I believed that was my responsibility."

He looked away briefly before meeting my eyes again. His calm expression finally began to crack.

"But I can't pretend anymore," he continued. "Not with you."

I felt my heart tighten as I listened. I had never heard him speak this openly before.

"I don't care about titles anymore," he said. "I don't care about expectations or traditions if the price is losing you."

The room became completely silent after those words. I could hear my own breathing more clearly than anything else.

"I spent months telling myself I could carry everything," he admitted. "I thought if I stayed strong enough, everyone else would be safe."

He shook his head slowly. The frustration he usually hid finally appeared.

"I was wrong," he said. "Some days I don't know if I'm being a good Alpha or simply trying not to lose the woman I love."

I stared at him without interrupting. For so long I had believed I understood what he carried.

Now I realized I had only seen part of it. He had been protecting everyone while quietly carrying his own fears alone.

"You never let me see this," I said softly.

"I didn't want you worrying about me too," he replied.

Tears gathered in my eyes before I could stop them. Not because I felt hopeless, but because I finally understood how lonely he had been.

"You don't have to carry everything by yourself anymore," I said.

"I know," he answered quietly. "I'm still learning how to believe that."

I stepped closer until we stood only inches apart. Neither of us looked away.

"I thought leaving might protect you," I admitted. "Instead I almost repeated the same mistake we made before."

He slowly reached for my hands. His grip remained gentle.

"We've already spent enough time trying to protect each other by staying apart," he said. "It never worked."

"No," I agreed. "It only made everything hurt more."

He smiled faintly for the first time since entering the room. That small change eased the tightness in my chest.

"So let's stop doing that," he said.

I nodded without hesitation. My answer no longer carried any doubt.

"We face everything together," I replied. "Every consequence."

"Together," he repeated.

I quietly unpacked the travel bag before either of us spoke again. Every piece of clothing I returned to the wardrobe felt like another decision to remain beside him.

When I finished, he rested his forehead gently against mine. Neither of us felt the need to say anything else for several moments.

The silence between us no longer carried uncertainty. It carried trust.

We spent the rest of the evening talking instead of hiding difficult thoughts. For the first time, neither of us pretended to be stronger than we truly felt.

He told me about the fears that still returned after the kidnapping. I told him how overwhelmed I had become by everyone's expectations.

Instead of trying to solve every problem immediately, we simply listened. That alone made the burdens feel lighter.

Later that night we lay together as the cabin grew quiet around us. I could feel the steady rhythm of his breathing beside me.

Something inside me changed without warning. The mate bond suddenly felt deeper than it ever had before.

I closed my eyes, and a strange awareness spread through me. I did not merely understand my own emotions anymore.

I felt calm because he felt calm. I sensed relief that did not entirely belong to me.

I opened my eyes in surprise before looking toward him. He had not noticed anything unusual.

"Caelen," I whispered.

He turned toward me immediately. Concern appeared on his face.

"What is it?" he asked.

"I think I can feel you," I admitted. "Your emotions."

He remained completely still while I searched for the right words. The experience frightened me because it felt completely real.

"I know you're calm," I continued. "Not because I can see you."

He gently took my hand. His expression stayed serious.

"The bond is changing," he said quietly.

I nodded slowly. Excitement and fear mixed together inside me.

"I've never experienced anything like this," I admitted.

Neither of us fully understood what the bond had become. Even so, we eventually drifted toward sleep with our hands still joined.

Just as I began falling asleep, the feeling inside the bond suddenly changed. It was not a dream.

A vivid vision appeared before me with startling clarity. I saw Duno standing in an unfamiliar place beside someone I had never seen before.
