CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Myra looked around like there was a ghost listening in on our conversation.
Maybe I'd doomed myself already before I even got a chance to implement the plan.
But her next words calmed me down a little, I was still a bit on track.
Her words were barely above a whisper as she tried to not let the gossipmongers hear us.
“Whatever you do, don't let Mia hear his name from your lips. She's vicious,” then she leaned in to whisper, “the alpha doesn't know but she's locked some Omegas in the dungeon for saying bad things about her.”
Before I could respond, there was a sudden shift in the large open air kitchen and I looked at the entrance to notice a shewolf with wide hips and hair wrapped in an apron hat walked in, her eyes going over everything happening.
“Hey! You!” She yelled, pointing in my direction. My heart beat faster, thinking I'd been caught.
“Ma'am?”
“Why aren't you doing anything?”
“I'm done already,” I whispered, her stern voice driving fear into me.
“Well there's still more to do. Those dishes won't wash themselves. Go to the storage room and get the supplies. When I come back, I want them all sparkling clean!”
“Yes, Ma'am!” I replied, nodding emphatically even when she'd turned her back.
“Yea,” Myra sighed, “she makes even the Alpha terrified. The store is by your left, down that shallow corridor,” she directed, knowing I didn't know where the hell anywhere was.
“Thank you,” I whispered, going off where I'd been sent to.
The word Shallow brought back the children’s voices, twisting that cursed song in my ears.
My hands clenched into fists, as I moved to the supply sheds, my chest burning with something hotter than grief.
I'd come here to gather information about the Alpha's personal omega and instead, I was getting yelled at and given difficult tasks.
A sword I could wield without breaking a sweat but the mere thought of washing that mountain of dishes nearly gave me a heart attack.
But then, anything to avenge Lionel. He would have done the same for me too.
I slowly pushed the door open, and it let out a groan, then the scent hit me like smoke trapped in liquid.
I looked around the shelves lined the walls, crowded with soaps, oils, and jars of powders.
My eyes caught on one thick glass, the liquid inside as clear as water, but when I pulled the cork, the fumes burned my nostrils and made my eyes water.
I didn’t care why they'd have such a potent level of undetectable wolf's bane in their kitchen.
It was exactly what I needed.
I would have had to go to their farms to create a less potent one, but this falling into my lap was further proof that I was meant to do this.
I sent a thank you to my dead parents, and I slipped the bottle under my waist before grabbing a detergent and shut the door behind me.
“Hey, you,” someone called out. “Come with me,” I said, looking around to make sure I was the one she called before going.
I could hear my heartbeat loud in my ears, scared the person had caught me. Every step felt like stepping deeper into something I couldn’t turn back from. But I didn’t stop.
I followed the stranger to another kitchen space, which was cleaner than the other one, this one was inside.
It was alive with the noise of pots clanging and knives chopping. Everyone seemed to be focused on their chores.
“Hey, are you here to mope around? Start washing,” she commanded.
“But the Head Omega told me to wash the ones outside,” I explained, scared to get in between two opposing heads.
“Someone is already working on that. Focus on this one,” she said, pointing to it.
I looked at the pile of plates on the sink, and took a deep breath.
My plans would have to pause for the moment, or so I thought.
But as I headed towards the overloaded sink area, I mistakenly stepped on a tray carelessly kept on the ground.
“Shit!” I cursed, nearly jumping out of my skin from fear. In fact, since I left that room, I'd been jumpy, scared someone was going to walk up to me and open my box of secrets.
“Hey!” Another girl yelled, “be careful, these are the Alpha's things. Go that way!” She commanded.
Everyone seemed to be doing that lately.
I obeyed, going to begin washing the pile of plates
I was almost done washing, about to begin rinsing it when I realized that everywhere was suddenly quiet. Besides the gentle humour of my wolf resting in my head, there was nobody here.
I looked around to be sure and as the goddess would have it, I was truly alone and opposite where I stood, sat the Alpha's tray of food.
My luck had been green all afternoon long so I decided to stretch it further. I may not be able to get the entire pack today but their alpha was childless. With him dead, the rest of the pack will eat themselves to destruction.
So I tentatively took a step in that direction, using my nose to check if anyone was heading this way.
Nyx roused in my head, but I shut her down. I didn't need her opinions at that moment.
I took out the wolfsbane, uncorked it, and went close enough.
Then I slowly lifted up the stainless cloche and saw the savoury soup filled with chunks of deer meat made for the Alpha.
It didn't upset me, at least he'll have a good meal before he dies.
Unlike my brother, who was butchered like the animal he was about to consume.
With a deep breath, I poured two drops in and gently closed the plate back.
I looked around like a thief as I corked the poison bottle back, slipping it into my underwear.
Then I headed out of the kitchen, they could get someone else to do their damn dishes.
But the second I walked out the door, there stood Darius, a murderous glint in his eyes.
