Chapter 183: The Betrayal of the Elders
**Koffi's POV**
The council chamber buzzed with tension, the air thick with unease. Elders from every corner of the pack had gathered, their faces etched with concern and fear. I stood at the center, my heart pounding, as Elder Nuru's voice sliced through the murmurs.
"Koffi," she began, her tone heavy with authority, "we have received troubling reports about Lyric."
I clenched my fists, bracing myself. "What reports?"
Elder Nuru exchanged glances with the others before speaking. "That she is possessed by the Forgotten One. That she bears its mark."
A murmur of agreement rippled through the chamber. I felt a surge of anger. "Lyric is not a threat. She's one of us."
Elder Jabari shook his head. "The mark she bears is a symbol of danger. We cannot ignore the possibility that the Forgotten One seeks to use her against us."
I took a step forward, my voice firm. "Lyric has fought alongside us, bled for us. She would never harm the pack."
Elder Nuru's eyes softened, but her resolve remained. "Koffi, the safety of the pack must come first. We cannot take risks with an ancient deity involved."
I felt a knot tighten in my chest. "What are you suggesting?"
Elder Jabari's gaze was cold. "She must be eliminated."
A gasp echoed through the chamber. I stared at them in disbelief. "You want to execute her? Without trial? Without understanding what's truly happening?"
Elder Nuru sighed. "It's not a decision we make lightly. But the risk—"
"Is worth investigating," I interjected. "We can't let fear dictate our actions."
Elder Jabari's eyes narrowed. "And if she turns against us? If the Forgotten One takes control?"
I squared my shoulders. "Then I'll be the one to stop her. But until then, I won't let anyone harm her."
The chamber fell silent, the weight of my words hanging in the air. Elder Nuru studied me for a long moment before nodding slowly. "Very well, Koffi. But know this: her fate rests on your shoulders. If anything goes wrong, it will be on you."
I met her gaze, unwavering. "I understand."
**Lyric's POV**
The night air was cool against my skin as I lay in our tent, exhaustion pulling at my eyelids. The events of the day replayed in my mind, a whirlwind of fear and uncertainty. I reached out, feeling the empty space beside me where Koffi should have been. He was still with the elders, fighting for me. For us.
A rustling sound outside the tent caught my attention. I sat up, my senses on high alert. "Koffi?"
No response.
I frowned, straining to hear. The sound came again, closer this time. My heart quickened. I reached for the dagger under my pillow, the cool metal reassuring against my palm.
The tent flap rustled, and a shadow slipped inside. I tensed, ready to strike, but the figure moved with a stealth that sent chills down my spine. In the dim light, I saw the glint of a blade, its edge coated with a dark substance.
Wolfsbane.
Panic surged through me. I tightened my grip on the dagger, preparing to defend myself. But as the figure approached, a strange calm washed over me. A voice, not my own, whispered in my mind.
You cannot kill what is eternal.
The figure raised the blade, aiming for my heart. I waited until the last possible moment before springing into action. With a swift motion, I knocked the blade from his hand and pressed my dagger to his throat.
"Who sent you?" I demanded, my voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through me.
The assassin's eyes widened in shock. "I... I was ordered..."
"By whom?" I pressed, applying a bit more pressure.
He swallowed hard. "The elders. They fear what you've become."
Anger flared within me. "And you thought murdering me in my sleep was the solution?"
He remained silent, his fear palpable.
I took a deep breath, trying to quell the rage. "Leave. And tell the elders that if they want to confront me, they can do so directly."
The assassin nodded shakily, scrambling to his feet and fleeing the tent. I watched him go, my heart heavy. The betrayal cut deep, but I couldn't afford to dwell on it. Not now.
I sheathed my dagger and stepped out into the night, seeking the one person I could trust.
**Koffi's POV**
The meeting had left me drained, but I couldn't rest. Not with Lyric's life hanging in the balance. As I made my way back to our tent, a figure approached me, moving swiftly through the shadows.
"Koffi," Lyric's voice called out, urgent and laced with fear.
I rushed to her, concern etching my features. "Lyric? What's wrong?"
She grabbed my arm, her grip tight. "Someone tried to kill me."
Rage and fear collided within me. "What? Who?"
"An assassin," she replied, her eyes searching mine. "Sent by the elders."
I felt a growl rumble in my chest. "They've gone too far."
Lyric shook her head. "We can't fight them all. We need to find another way."
I took a deep breath, trying to steady my racing heart. "We'll figure it out. Together."
She nodded, her trust in me unwavering. "Together."
As we stood there, a sudden chill swept through the camp. The air grew heavy, and a whisper echoed around us.
"You cannot kill what is eternal."
Lyric's eyes widened, her hand flying to her chest. A faint, glowing mark pulsed beneath her skin, the symbol of the Forgotten One.
I stared in shock. "What does this mean?"
Lyric's voice trembled. "It means... it's not over."
