Chapter 67 Worried And Scared

Chapter 67 Worried And Scared
{Warren POV}

"These are the files, Alpha," Jane said as she walked over and placed a heavy stack of paper files on my table. "I've also looked into the houses we've sold for the past few months, as you requested."

"Thank you," I said, resting my back against the chair.

I sat there in silence, but I just couldn't get my mind off the heavy worry that had been weighing on me ever since I woke up this morning. It had been days since Diana went missing from the pack, and still, she hadn't been found. Every single hour that passed without any news felt like a sharp needle pressing into my skin.

The dark thought that she might be dead clutched again at my chest as the cold idea crossed my mind. My wolf whimpered deep inside my heart at the thought, scratching at my ribs in pure agony. I didn't even know why I felt the way I did for her. She was just a worker in my pack house, yet my entire chest felt empty without her presence around. I just felt like seeing her face would bring me relief, like my mind wouldn't rest until my eyes finally saw her standing in front of me again.

Jane turned around and was about heading toward the door to leave me alone, but I called out her name before she could step outside.

"Jane," I said, reaching up with a tired hand to loosen my tight necktie.

"Yes, Alpha?" she answered, turning her body back toward my direction with a respectful nod.

I looked at her, hesitating for a long while before I spoke. I gripped the edge of my desk, trying to find the right words.

"Can you help me look into everyone in the pack?" I asked, my voice dropping into a serious tone. "I've asked my Betas to check everything for me, but I don't trust their judgment on this matter. My mother senses that there is someone using dark spell inside the pack, and they might be an insider or a rogue hiding among us."

"That can't be," Jane said, her eyes widening slightly as she took a step a little closer to the desk. "If there was such a dangerous person in the pack using dark spells, they would have been caught by our guards already."

"That's what I thought too," I told her, leaning forward until my arms were resting on the smooth surface of my desk. "Except the person is hiding in places they know we wouldn't look. Someone is playing a dangerous game behind my back."

"Do not worry, Alpha," Jane said softly, her expression turning sharp and focused. "I will look into it myself. I will go through the pack lists and keep everything quiet until we find out who it is."

"Okay," I said, breathing out a small sigh of relief. Then I paused, looking up at her face again with hope in my eyes. "Is there any update regarding Diana?"

Jane lowered her eyes slightly, looking down at the floor, and shook her head. "There isn't any news yet, Alpha. The search teams have cleared the inner borders, but they haven't found any trace of her outside the territory."

A heavy wave of worry hit my heart when she said that. My chest felt tight, and my wolf let out a sad, restless growl deep inside my chest. It felt like time was running out, and I was just sitting behind a wooden desk doing nothing.

"You can leave, Jane," I said, my voice dropping low and rough.

"Yes, Alpha," she replied softly, turning around and walking out of the study, closing the heavy door quietly behind her.

Once she was gone, I stood up from my leather chair and picked up my phone from the desk. My fingers were stiff and cold as I dialed Cora's number, pressing the phone against my ear as I began pacing back and forth near my desk.

The line rang once, twice, three times, making my heart beat faster against my ribs.

"Hello, Alpha," Cora's voice came through the speaker after a few seconds.

"Cora," I said, not wasting any time with greetings. "Has Diana tried to reach out to you through all these days? Has she called you on your phone or sent any kind of message to you?"

"No, Alpha," Cora replied, her tone sounding quiet and deeply sad. "She hasn't contacted me at all. I haven't heard a single word from her since that day."

A sudden flash of frustration boiled up inside my chest. My wolf growled at the lack of answers.

"How could she just disappear like that without reaching out to you?" I shouted into the phone, my voice tight and strained with pain. "You were her closest friend in the whole pack! She trusts you! She should have called you the moment she got somewhere safe!"

"I don't know, Alpha," Cora whispered softly, her voice trembling over the line. "Maybe she was scared. Maybe she just wanted to get far away from everything that happened to her here."

I stood by the window and asked her a few more questions about Diana. I asked about where she used to go when she wanted to be alone, if she had any hidden places near the border wall, or if she had ever mentioned any plans to leave the pack before she vanished into thin air. But Cora didn't have any real answers for me. Every single response she gave was just another dead end that made my head hurt even more.

"If she contacts you for any reason, tell me immediately," I ordered, my tone firm and commanding.

"I will, Alpha," Cora said quietly before the line went silent.

I ended the call and dropped the phone back onto the table with a loud thud that echoed through the quiet room. I stood there staring at the black screen, lost in my dark thoughts for a long while.

I didn't know what to do anymore. My head was pounding with a dull ache, and my wolf was pacing back and forth inside my mind, scratching at my ribs with sharp claws. I failed to accept the fact that I won't get to see Diana again. The thought alone made me feel so down and weak, like a vital part of my soul was missing from my body. I needed to see her. I didn't care if I had to search the whole woods for her myself, tree by tree, path by path, until I found where she was hiding.

I reached out my hand, grabbed my car keys off the desk, and prepared to leave the office once again to head out to the border woods.

Before I could reach the exit, a quick knock sounded at the door.

The door opened wide before I could even answer, and Tonia walked into the room. She had that bright, excited look on her face that she usually used to have whenever she came to see me.

"Alpha!" Tonia said cheerfully, stepping into the office with quick steps and shutting the door behind her. "I was hoping I would meet you before you went out."

I stopped right in my tracks, gripping my car keys tightly in my hand as I looked at her.

"It's been long since you came to see me, why are you here?" I asked, my voice laced with serious as I stared at her. "You didn't attended my Luna ball, you off all people."
