Chapter 61 Careful Steps

Chapter 61 Careful Steps
"Have you thought of a name for them?" Gina asked as she stepped forward, standing right beside me.

I wiped the fresh tears forming in my eyes, letting a soft smile touch my lips. "I haven't. I think I should give that a little time."

Gina nodded her head gently. "Okay, that's not a bad idea." She stretched her hand out and touched the soft cheek of my baby girl. "Aren't you just the most beautiful baby in the whole world?" she mumbled with a bright smile.

The girl moved her little arms, a tiny smile appearing on her lips as she stared up at Gina. My pups looked so healthy and peaceful that I was starting to wonder why they were isolated for special treatment in the first place.

"Diana, what are you doing here?" Aiden's deep voice came from behind us, cutting through the warm moment.

I turned around to look in his direction. "I just came to see them."

He stepped closer, his dark eyes sweeping over my body, looking especially at my stomach before he spoke once more.

"You need to head back to bed," he said, stopping right next to where I was standing. "You haven't fully recovered yet."

"I'm fine," I told him, turning back to stare lovingly at my pups. "My wolf did a great job healing me overnight."

"I thought as much," Aiden said. But then his sharp gaze looked past me, and he immediately rushed forward. "You shouldn't have opened this glass cover!"

He turned his head to glare at Gina, who had quickly shifted back a few steps. "It was closed for a reason."

"But they looked fine," I told him, looking up at his tense face.

"They are recovering," Aiden explained, his voice flat but serious. "The doctor said the way to help them recover properly is to ensure the glass stays closed. It allows the special treatment the doctor gave them to work since they are werewolf pups born early."

I lowered my gaze, a wave of guilt washing over me. "I hope the fact that we already opened it won't have a bad effect on them."

"No, but don't do that again," he said, shooting another cold look toward Gina before glancing back at me.

I stayed by the cribs for a while longer, watching my babies breathe as Aiden closed the glass cover securely. Before I could say anything else, the door to the room swung open. A nurse and a doctor hurried inside, looking around in a rush as if an alarm had gone off.

"We got an emergency alert at the desk," the doctor said, looking quickly at the monitor screens.

"It's nothing," Aiden told them, his tone calm and cold. "The glass was just opened for a moment, that's why the sensor went off."

The doctor let out a breath and nodded. "Okay." He stepped forward and began doing a routine checkup on the twin pups.

Seeing the doctor work, Gina quietly slipped out of the room. Aiden turned to me and gestured toward the door. "We should let the doctor do his job."

I nodded, taking one last look at my sleeping babies before following him out into the hall. We walked down the quiet corridor together. I was expecting Aiden to tell me to go straight back to my hospital bed, but instead, he looked over at me as we reached the main doors.

"Since you can stand on your feet now, it is better you go outside and feel how the fresh air is," he suggested quietly.

As we kept walking, he glanced down at the floor and noticed that I was walking barefoot on the cold tile. He stopped in his tracks.

"Follow me," he said, turning down a side hallway.

We walked to another part of the hospital where the staff kept supplies. Aiden opened a small storage closet, pulled out a pair of simple slip-on shoes, and handed them down to me.

"Put these on," he said.

"Thank you," I said, sliding my feet into the shoes. The warm cover felt so good against my cold skin.

We turned around and walked toward the main exit of the hospital. As the cool breeze hit my face through the doors, I looked up at him. "Thank you for everything you have done to help me, Aiden. Seeing my pups today made me so happy, and I am really grateful."

Aiden scoffed softly, looking straight ahead as we stepped outside. "You are thanking me too much."

He guided me over to the side of the yard where a long iron bench sat under a tree, and we both sat down. I used the moment to look around. The sign at the front showed the name Wolfclaw pack hospital, and it was far bigger than I had thought.

The entire place was neat, beautiful, and completely different from the Moonlight Pack.

"I thought your mate didn't care about you," Aiden spoke up suddenly, his voice low as he stared out across the lawn.

His words made me turn my head quickly toward his direction. I lowered my gaze to my lap, feeling that familiar ache in my chest. "He is not my mate anymore. He belongs to my stepsister now."

Aiden shifted his weight on the bench, looking at me sideways. "Though that part isn't entirely his fault right now. He has men everywhere looking for you, and they are even searching close to my border."

Hearing that made instant fear grip my heart. My hands tightened into fists over my knees as panic rushed through my veins. If Warren's warriors found me, the news would get back to the pack house. Layla would find out that I survived, and the lives of my newborn pups would be in terrible danger again.

I turned to Aiden, my eyes wide with desperation. "Can my pups and I move into the room you promised to prepare for us in the mansion today? I don't want Alpha Warren to know where I am."

Aiden looked deeply into my eyes, his face unreadable, but his gaze softened just a tiny bit. "I know you are worried, Diana. I can see the fear right in your eyes."

Our gaze met and locked for a long moment in the quiet afternoon air, the intense pull between us making my heart beat fast against my ribs, until I finally flushed and had to look away.
