Chapter 35
Chapter 35
He followed me through the halls; I could hear his steps behind me, now accompanied by his protests.
I kept walking, not wanting to give him more reasons to hate me. Peta was already furious with me over the whole situation with the baby and Bridget.
“If you think I’ll give up with this silent treatment, you’re dead wrong.” He growled behind me as I entered my office. “What did you do this time?”
“Why do you think I did something?”
“Because you’re usually the one who screws things up!” he shouted, and I wanted it to be a lie, but he was right—I always ruined everything around me.
“I left her alone in the cabin and went looking for answers, but she didn’t like that I decided not to take her…”
“Why didn’t you take her? You insisted on being alone with her in that damn place, and for what? To leave her by herself?”
I slammed my fists on the desk, making the room shake, but Peta wasn’t intimidated. He knew me too well for that.
“You wanted me to take her to a vampire den? She was safer in that cabin than with me anywhere else!” I shouted the truth.
If only I’d accounted for her stubbornness, I could’ve predicted what she’d do.
“There’s something you’re not telling me.” He pressed, and yes, there were countless things. “Those clothes, her hair, your scent was all over her! You slept with her, didn’t you?”
Damn it! Why couldn’t my brother just give up and leave me alone? I had so many problems to deal with, starting with my own, and he was coming at me with this interrogation just to mess with me.
“That’s none of your business…”
“It is my business!” he shouted, cutting me off. “It’s my business when you’re playing with her feelings, taking advantage of her vulnerable moment to get her into bed!”
“Feelings? What feelings are you talking about? She hates me!” That was a fact no one could dispute. “And if anyone in this room has ever used that girl, I guarantee it wasn’t me. We were in the cabin, and it happened. It’s not a big deal.”
The words sounded false even to my own ears.
“It might not be a big deal to you, who’s had countless women in your bed and never cared about them, but for Bri, it is a big deal.” His expression shifted, like he had something important to say. “She likes you, brother. It’s obvious. Even after being rejected by you, the looks she gives you, the disappointment on her face when she saw you with another, they’re proof she’s fallen for you.”
That couldn’t be true. There was no way. Why would a witch like her fall for a wolf like me?
“That’s not…”
“Just listen. She likes you and loves that baby. Don’t compare her to the others you’ve known. If you don’t feel the same, stay away, for her sake and your son’s.” Peta turned to leave. I heard the door open as I stared at the desk, trying to process his words. I looked up in time to see him still standing at the door, watching me. “Bridget isn’t like your mother. Keep that in mind!”
