Chapter 262 Father and Son Discord
The loud noise startled the female con artist so badly that her face turned even paler, as if she was about to faint.
Stanley was so furious that his eyes were bloodshot and his whole body was shaking.
His normally refined forehead now showed prominent veins, as if he wanted to devour someone.
He, the chairman of the Crawford Group, the man whose word was law in the Crawford family, had been completely fooled by a gambler.
And because of this, he had been left lying on the operating table for two hours!
If such a scandal got out, he would truly become the laughingstock of everyone.
Stanley had never suffered such humiliation before.
At this moment, he truly wanted to kill someone.
"You!" Just as he was about to curse, he suddenly felt dizzy.
Amelia noticed something was wrong with Stanley. She stepped forward and said, "Your condition doesn't allow you to get angry. Please calm down. Don't get upset over someone like this - it's not worth hurting yourself."
Amelia didn't know which word struck a chord with Stanley.
Probably the phrase "not worth it."
His expression softened slightly.
Because it really wasn't worth it.
This female con artist wasn't even worthy of making him angry. Under normal circumstances, she wouldn't even have the right to meet him.
They were from two different worlds.
He didn't need to waste his energy on someone like her.
"Take her away. Handle this however you see fit, Samuel. This matter must not be known by more people."
Samuel's face was expressionless.
"I'm unreliable. I can't do anything without wanting the whole world to know. Better let the person you trust most handle it. Nash, this is your job now."
Nash looked as if he were facing a major crisis and turned to Stanley for help.
"Mr. Crawford."
Stanley closed his eyes.
He knew Samuel's temperament.
Samuel would indeed make the matter known to the whole world.
"You take her away! Doesn't she owe loan sharks? Send her to her creditors and let them deal with her."
If she couldn't repay the debt, the loan sharks wouldn't let her go.
"Yes."
Nash quickly called people in and dragged the female con artist out.
Since they couldn't call the police, they had to handle this secretly. They knocked the woman unconscious, disguised her as a patient, and carried her out of the hospital on a stretcher.
Everything was done quietly, all to protect Stanley's dignity.
After she was taken away, Stanley asked Yosef, "Since you caught that con artist, you should also know where Evelyn is, right?"
The female con artist was dealt with, but there was still the instigator, Evelyn.
If Evelyn hadn't been searching everywhere for the Miracle Physician, and then failed to verify the person after finding them, none of this would have happened.
So Evelyn needed to be dealt with as well.
But it couldn't be done openly.
He didn't want more people to know about this.
This was a matter of dignity.
At his position and age, reputation and self-respect were more important than anything.
If word got out that he had been tricked by a pharmacy clerk into lying on an operating table for two hours, he would become the biggest laughingstock in Thornfield and even all of Phoenicia.
He heard Yosef say, "We didn't catch her, but we've already tracked her down. She's on a train to Silverpine District."
Stanley frowned.
"What's she doing in Silverpine District?"
"Silverpine District is only a river away from the border. She probably knows the con artist's scheme has been exposed and you won't let her off, so she's trying to escape."
Thornfield's airport was built by the Crawford Group, so stopping her there would be easy.
So she found another way - not taking a plane, but boarding a train to Silverpine District, then leaving the country from there.
Silverpine District was at the border between two countries, a chaotic place. Running from there was indeed a good plan.
Yosef said, "This Evelyn does have some street smarts. That train is non-stop, no intermediate stations. If we want to catch her, we can only fly ahead to the final station and wait. But it's too chaotic there, and it's possible she could slip away right under our noses."
After all, they couldn't openly arrest someone - they had to show some respect to the local authorities.
Amelia spoke up at this moment.
"My dad's car accident was orchestrated by Evelyn behind the scenes. We don't have to act ourselves - we can report this to the police and let them arrest her. The police have legitimate grounds to arrest people, and we can watch from the shadows to make sure she doesn't escape. Wouldn't that be better?"
Amelia had long wanted to find Evelyn to avenge Quinton.
Unfortunately, they had needed Leonard to take the blame for Quinton's case earlier, so she had no choice but to hold herself back.
Now that Leonard had been caught, they could bring up the old matter again.
After all, they had already collected all the evidence to bring Leonard down - this one case wouldn't makemuch of a difference.
Samuel nodded.
"That works. Let's do as you say."
Yosef immediately said, "Leave it to me. You stay here and handle your business. I'll take care of this small matter."
Samuel nodded again, "Okay."
Then Yosef left.
But Amelia noticed that Stanley's expression was slightly uncomfortable.
She was puzzled.
The reason Stanley looked uncomfortable was because he had known about Quinton's case all along and had helped Evelyn.
When Tyrell had told Evelyn to turn herself in, it was he who had stepped in and helped Evelyn out.
Now hearing them bring this up, he felt rather awkward.
Amelia didn't know the details, but Samuel was very clear about it.
Back then, his subordinates had reported to him that Evelyn had visited The Crawford Manor, and after she came out, The Hays family stopped pressuring her.
He knew it was Stanley who had helped her.
But at the time, they needed to deal with Leonard, so he hadn't said anything.
But now it was different.
He said mockingly, "Dad, what's wrong with you? You look a bit guilty."
"What do I have to feel guilty about!"
"You know in your own heart."
"You!"
Stanley was about to lose his temper, but seeing Amelia still there, he had to suppress his anger.
Amelia was even more confused, not knowing what the two of them were talking about.
Fortunately, Samuel didn't continue, and only talked about his condition.
"I showed Amelia your medical records. She thinks that although it's dangerous, with her skills she can ensure the surgery is successful. Her dad was in a car accident before and was also injured in the head."
"The surgery was very successful. The video has already been used as training material at that hospital. If you don't believe it, you can send someone to Goldenvale to ask."
"You didn't agree to let Amelia treat you before. I'm asking you again now - do you want her to do the surgery for you?"
Stanley coughed into his hand and said, "Let's talk about this later."
Samuel's brows furrowed tightly.
"I don't understand what you're worried about. You'd rather let a con artist do surgery on you than let Amelia do it? Am I less trustworthy than Evelyn?"
"I didn't mean that." Stanley said lightly, "I'm just tired and want to rest for a while before deciding whether to have surgery."
Samuel felt like something was stuck in his throat.
He didn't hate Stanley.
He only hated that he wasn't ruthless enough.
If he were more ruthless, he could ignore whether he lived or died and wouldn't keep pushing.
"Samuel." Amelia took Samuel's hand and said, "Mr. Crawford just got off the operating table. He probably still has some trauma. Let him think it over properly. Give him some time."
Amelia was afraid Samuel couldn't control his anger and would say something irreversible.
If the father and son really got into it, they would only hurt each other and let others benefit.
Now that they had finally brought down The Hays family, she really didn't want any more trouble.
She had been on guard for so long - she just wanted to relax for a while.
Fortunately, although Samuel was angry, he listened to Amelia.
He didn't say anything more, but he didn't leave either, as if waiting for someone.
Samuel and Stanley remained in this standoff.
Amelia stood beside Samuel, feeling extremely awkward.
She never knew that family interactions could be like this.
When she first returned to the Richardson family, everyone was happy to know she was back - except for Felix, of course.
So what she felt in her family was full of love, not undercurrents.
Just then, there was a knock on the hospital room door.
Amelia even felt a sense of relief and immediately looked toward the door to see which kind soul had come to rescue her.
As Stanley said "come in," the door was pushed open and two familiar figures walked in.
It was actually Finn and Anthony.
But Scarlett was nowhere to be seen.
Finn's gaze rested on Amelia's face, and he nodded slightly at her.
Amelia nodded back.
Finn hadn't broken his word - he had indeed helped her.
In bringing down The Hays family, he had also put in great effort.
Later, Magnus was vindicated and restored to his position, and Finn, as inspector, returned to Thornfield, but with another half-level promotion.
Amelia had also heard that Finn and Scarlett seemed to have broken the ice in their relationship.
Faith had told her this.
She was very happy for him.
But she hadn't expected to run into him here today.
However, Finn didn't seem surprised that she was here.
Amelia quickly spotted Jeremy behind them and probably guessed the reason.
So after nodding, she had nothing more to say.
"Anthony, why are you here?" Stanley sat up in surprise.
"Lie back down." Anthony walked to Stanley's side in a few steps.
After Amelia's treatment and herbal prescriptions, his health had greatly improved.
Although his hair was completely white, he was in very good spirits and looked even healthier than Stanley.
Anthony said, "I came to see you, and also to express my thanks."
"Thanks?" Stanley was even more surprised.
Anthony turned around, nodded at Amelia, and said with a smile, "I came to thank your future daughter-in-law."
"I was sick before and bedridden for over half a year. Through an old friend's introduction, I found the Miracle Physician to treat me. At first I didn't have much hope, but who knew, she actually cured me. According to my current condition, the hospital says I can live at least another twenty years."
Stanley's expression was complex.
The way he looked at Amelia also changed subtly.
But it was only for a moment before returning to normal.
"Congratulations to you. But I'm afraid my fate isn't as good as yours."
"Why do you say that? I heard from Finn that Amelia will soon marry into your family. With her around, why worry about not living to a hundred?"
Stanley smiled and didn't discuss this further, only asking about Anthony's physical condition.
The two chatted about various things for a while, then Anthony got up to leave.
His purpose was to let Stanley confirm that Amelia's medical skills were exceptional.
He had said what needed to be said, so it was time to go.
