Chapter 128 Preventive Injection
Mason was playing cards with Liam, Lucas, and Grant.
Felix had come back a couple of days ago, but his injuries hadn't fully healed yet. Worried that Natalie would notice, he made an excuse about staying in his room to reflect, rarely appearing downstairs.
Amelia's gaze fixed on Mason, feeling puzzled.
If this were a girlfriend he'd been with for so many years, why had he never brought her home to meet the family? And why did the family never mention her either?
It was as if this girl didn't exist at all.
This wasn't like Mason at all.
He was someone with a strong sense of responsibility.
He wouldn't be in a relationship and would not bring his girlfriend home.
Amelia's phone buzzed with a message.
Max asked if she wanted him to check it out first.
Amelia replied: [No need, I'll go myself. Your identity is too conspicuous, don't get involved in this.]
Max: [Okay.]
Amelia scrolled up through the chat history and looked at the address.
It was a very old residential area in Goldenvale, on Willowbrook Road.
Just then, the weather station mentioned Willowbrook Road.
Amelia looked up and saw the news reporting that this area was heavily affected by the typhoon.
She frowned and instinctively looked at Mason again.
But Mason still showed no reaction, continuing to play cards enthusiastically with his brothers.
Curiosity got the better of Amelia, and she decided to go out and take a look.
But going out during a typhoon required a reasonable excuse, otherwise Natalie wouldn't feel comfortable letting her go.
Her eyes darted around, and she sent Grant a message.
Grant checked his phone, then looked in her direction and gave her a slight nod.
Two minutes later, Grant suddenly threw down his cards and clutched his stomach, saying, "It hurts so much..."
The brothers looked at him.
"Grant, if you lost, you lost. Don't make up excuses to weasel out," Lucas said, looking unconvinced.
Grant pinched his thigh hard, and his face instantly turned pale.
"I'm not making excuses, my stomach really hurts..."
"What's wrong?" Natalie immediately stood up from the sofa and walked over.
Grant frowned and said, "I think I ate something bad. I had an unwashed apple this morning..."
Natalie quickly called Amelia over.
"Amelia, come check on Grant."
Amelia walked over and examined Grant, then said, "It's probably acute gastroenteritis. He needs to go to the hospital for an IV. Traditional medicine would be too slow. Grant, can you walk? I'll go with you."
Grant nodded.
Mason and Lucas immediately offered to go along.
Amelia insisted on taking Grant herself.
"I'm familiar with the hospital and know what medications to ask the doctor for. You guys going would just cause confusion. Just wait at home for us to come back."
They had to agree.
Only Liam looked at Amelia meaningfully but didn't contradict her. Instead, he backed her up.
"Amelia is more reliable than you two. Let her go. Holden, help them with the driving."
"Yes, sir."
So Amelia had Holden drive them to the hospital, and the two of them had Holden wait in the car.
But as soon as they entered the hospital's main entrance, they immediately left through another exit.
Grant straightened his back, full of energy, and asked, "Amelia, you said you'd treat me to a nice meal. What are we going to eat?"
Amelia looked at him and sighed inwardly.
Grant was too innocent.
She couldn't bear to deceive him completely, so she said, "Let's go somewhere first, then I'll treat you to something good."
"Where are we going?"
"Willowbrook Road."
During the typhoon, with such heavy wind and rain, getting a taxi was difficult.
What should have been a thirty-minute drive took them a full hour and a half.
This area was indeed heavily affected by the typhoon.
The maple trees on both sides of the road had all fallen, and some residential buildings were damaged too.
Fortunately, the place Amelia was heading to was relatively safe.
She got out of the car in the rain without an umbrella.
In this weather, holding an umbrella would only have it blown away by the strong wind.
So they were quickly drenched.
But the trip wasn't in vain.
Amelia found out what she wanted to know at a nearby restaurant.
In this weather, they were the only customers in the restaurant.
The owner was bored too, so he explained the situation to her in detail.
Mason's girlfriend was named Lyra Cole, and she died in a car accident three years ago.
The car that hit her was a luxury vehicle, and the driver was drunk. By all rights, it should have been entirely the other party's fault.
But when the responsibility was determined, it was split fifty-fifty, and there was no mention of the drunk driving.
The owner sighed and said, "That person had quite a background. When the responsibility was divided, the Cole family made a fuss, but it didn't help. Instead, two of them were arrested."
"And then?" Amelia asked.
"Then the girl's boyfriend showed up. He seemed to have quite a background too, brought a professional legal team to collect evidence, and got the perpetrator sent to prison."
"But because he didn't want money, only wanted the other party jailed, the Cole family didn't get much compensation. They turned around and blamed him for meddling."
"At first, the young man would often come to visit the girl's family, but after being driven away every time, he stopped coming. He only sends gifts during holidays."
Amelia felt she had glimpsed the reason for Mason's career troubles over the years.
She placed several dollar bills under the plate and left with Grant.
Grant had already realized that Amelia hadn't come to treat him to good food.
Because the restaurant's food was terrible.
She had come to gather information.
The wind and rain had lessened a bit. As they walked along under the eaves, Grant couldn't help asking, "Amelia, who is this person you're asking about?"
Amelia glanced at him and asked, "You don't know who Lyra is?"
Grant shook his head. "No, but the name sounds familiar. Someone mentioned it before, but I can't remember."
Amelia simply reminded him directly: "Mason's girlfriend."
Grant's eyes suddenly widened as he remembered who had mentioned the name Lyra.
Thinking about what the restaurant owner had just said, he sighed.
"We all knew Mason had a girlfriend before. He said he'd bring her home when the time was right. But later he never mentioned her again, so we thought they'd broken up. After all, it was a school romance, and not many people make it from school uniforms to wedding dresses. But I really didn't expect that Lyra had passed away..."
Amelia nodded.
"I didn't expect it either."
Grant asked, "Why did you suddenly want to find her?"
Amelia knew Grant was trustworthy, so she didn't hide it from him and said straightforwardly, "Through my connections, I investigated Mason. I found that his career troubles over the years were due to someone sabotaging him behind the scenes, but I couldn't find out who was behind it. Until I heard he had a long-term girlfriend. That's why I came here."
She already knew that everything traced back to the perpetrator sitting in prison.
The restaurant owner's knowledge was limited. The person's exact identity still needed to be investigated more carefully.
But now that she had a direction, the Shadow Operations Division could find out quickly.
After finishing this matter, Amelia went to visit Geraldo.
Geraldo was staying awake for longer periods each day, but he still had a breathing tube and couldn't speak.
When she arrived, neither Kyle nor Yasmin was there.
The bodyguards York had arranged recognized her and greeted her politely, telling her that Geraldo was awake right now.
"Thank you for your hard work. When Geraldo is discharged, I'll treat you all to dinner."
They all said they wouldn't dare accept.
Amelia gave a few more instructions before putting on a mask and entering the ICU.
When Geraldo saw her, he became very emotional, and the monitor showed his heart rate rising.
Amelia held his hand.
"Don't get excited, it's not good for your health. Close your eyes first and calm down."
Geraldo did as she said.
When his heart rate returned to normal, Amelia told him to open his eyes.
But as soon as he opened them, Geraldo got excited again, his lips moving constantly, clearly wanting to say something.
Amelia said, "I know what you want to say. You want to talk about Yasmin, right?"
Geraldo was a bit surprised, then nodded.
Half of Amelia's guess was confirmed.
She said, "I know what you want to say, and I can guess what's going on. But no matter what, nothing is more important than your own health. Your most important task right now is to get better. As for those harmful people, I'll deal with them eventually. There's no rush."
Geraldo was old, experienced, and rather stubborn, not easily persuaded by others.
He had just been momentarily emotional, but now Amelia's words quickly calmed him down.
He nodded, indicating he understood.
Amelia felt a bit more at ease, then thought of Kyle and couldn't help giving him a heads-up.
"I've met your grandson."
Geraldo looked at her, not understanding why she suddenly brought up Kyle.
Amelia continued, "Your grandson has been too well protected by you, so he's a bit too naive and easily swayed by others."
Geraldo felt a bit embarrassed.
This was his only grandson, so of course he had to spoil him even more.
But he was still puzzled about why Amelia was bringing up Kyle.
Had Kyle offended Amelia?
The next second, Amelia said, "He's probably been deceived by Yasmin. The two of them are quite close."
Geraldo's eyes widened, anger almost jumping out of them, and his heart rate shot up again.
Amelia patted his hand.
"You've forgotten what I just said. No matter who or what, nothing is more important than your own health. Calm down, and then I'll continue."
Geraldo nodded and forced himself to calm down.
Only then did Amelia continue.
"Actually, you can't blame your grandson. Yasmin's acting is too good, and she's beautiful. It's normal for him to be confused for a while. But I can tell he cares about you, and his character isn't bad. After you get better, don't get angry with him. Educate him properly so it doesn't hurt your relationship with him."
Geraldo nodded.
He took in everything Amelia said.
Soon, Geraldo started feeling drowsy again.
He was too weak.
Amelia didn't stay long either.
She had given the necessary warnings, which should prevent Yasmin from upsetting Geraldo again.
Her student was kind and warm-hearted, but not stupid.
After leaving the ICU, Amelia and Grant returned to the car.
As Holden was driving, he asked about Grant's condition.
"Much better. The injection really worked."
Holden was about to speak when suddenly the car in front braked hard, and he quickly braked too.
The inertia threw forward the two people in the back seat.
Grant wasn't sitting steady and hit his forehead hard on the seat in front.
