Chapter 111 I Am Not a Bad Man
Samuel slowly lifted his eyes to look at her, as if examining her expression bit by bit.
Probably because he didn't see what he wanted to see—something like joy—a helpless smile appeared at the corner of his lips.
"I'm not trying to express anything. I'm just proving my innocence. I don't have a girlfriend, and I'm definitely not the kind of bad guy you thought I was before—someone who wants to date multiple people at once."
Amelia thought her heart was calm, but it felt like a breeze suddenly swept through her peaceful mind.
She cleared her throat and explained, "I didn't say you were a bad guy."
"But you thought so, didn't you?"
Amelia put the documents on the coffee table, stood up and said, "You asked me to come over just to say this?"
"Yes, and no."
"What do you mean?"
"Actually, besides this, there's another matter."
"Go ahead."
The sooner he said it, the sooner she could leave.
For some reason, when alone with Samuel, she felt even the air was a bit suffocating.
Samuel sat up straight.
Probably because he'd just finished physical therapy, his whole body was aching.
But this was nothing to him—he quickly ignored it.
"Yesterday, while we were still at the charity exhibition, a group of people breached my network firewall and destroyed an important file of mine."
Amelia's eyelids twitched twice.
Fortunately, her expression didn't show anything unusual.
"Why are you telling me this?" Amelia asked, pretending not to know.
Samuel glanced at her, making Amelia's heart tense.
At this point when Shadow Operations Division hadn't completely relocated yet, it wouldn't be good if Samuel set his sights on Shadow Operations Division.
Fortunately, Samuel quickly looked away and pointed at the cup on the coffee table.
"I need another glass of water."
He was really treating her like his subordinate.
But feeling guilty inside, she didn't say anything and obediently picked up the cup to get another glass of warm water.
Samuel continued drinking water sip by sip.
Probably sensing Amelia was getting impatient again, he explained, "When a person is thirsty, they can't drink too fast, or they could drown."
Could someone really drown from just one glass of water?
Samuel, seeing she didn't believe him, gave a real-life example.
Amelia was stunned.
With her exceptional medical skills, this was the first time she'd heard such a thing.
No wonder he drank so slowly—he was afraid of choking himself to death.
Quite concerned about his own life.
She thought his refusal to go to the hospital despite having a fever meant he wasn't afraid of death.
After waiting and waiting, Samuel finally finished the glass of water.
Amelia even suspected he already knew Shadow Operations Division was behind this and was deliberately stalling to scare her.
Finally, Samuel spoke again.
"I want to commission Shadow Operations Division to help me investigate this matter."
Amelia's heartbeat quickened.
"If you want to commission Shadow Operations Division, why come to me?"
Samuel glanced at her. "Aren't you connected to Shadow Operations Division? Everyone knows that Miracle Physician can only be reached through Shadow Operations Division."
Amelia breathed a sigh of relief.
Good thing he hadn't guessed she was the leader of Shadow Operations Division.
"Shadow Operations Division takes orders through a forum. I'll send you the forum link, and you can place your order there."
"Can't you use your connections? Placing an order through the forum has a low acceptance rate, but if you help, wouldn't the success rate be higher?"
"I also receive orders through the forum and don't have much contact with Shadow Operations Division people, so I might not be able to help you." Amelia distanced herself clearly.
"I'm not asking you to beg them for free. I just need you to pass along a message."
"What message?"
"I heard Shadow Operations Division is recruiting talented pharmacists. I have someone under me named Selene Peterson. If Shadow Operations Division is willing to help me investigate who breached my system, I can give them this person."
Amelia's heart stirred.
She'd heard of Selene—from a medical family background, indeed a very talented pharmacist.
Shadow Operations Division had tried to recruit her before, but she'd refused.
So she was Samuel's person—no wonder she rejected Shadow Operations Division's recruitment.
But her expression remained unchanged as she said, "If you give your person to Shadow Operations Division, how will they know you won't take her back after the job is done?"
Samuel's thin lips curved. "You can assure them of this. I have something that controls Selene. If I give this to Shadow Operations Division, she'll only be Shadow Operations Division's person from then on."
Amelia thought for a moment, then nodded. "I can pass along the message. But like I said, there's no guarantee."
"I'm already very grateful that you're willing to pass along the message."
Amelia couldn't help asking, "What important file is it that you're willing to give Selene to Shadow Operations Division?"
These wealthy families were quite afraid of Shadow Operations Division's capabilities.
Because if Shadow Operations Division wanted to, they could destroy a wealthy family.
Giving Selene to Shadow Operations Division would undoubtedly increase their power, which wasn't good news for these big families.
"It's a video file. There's someone very important to me in it. I must find out her identity."
Amelia was somewhat surprised.
She thought Samuel wouldn't say, but he actually did.
Only this matter involved Finn.
Thinking of Finn, Amelia's eyes flickered.
"I'll ask for you," she said.
"Thank you."
Amelia nodded slightly. With the matter settled, she was about to leave when Samuel spoke again. "Could you help me get the documents from the desk? I have an important meeting this morning."
Amelia looked at his slightly pale lips and, out of medical habit, reminded him, "With your current condition, you should really rest properly, or you won't be able to handle it."
"After the meeting, I'll go to the hospital. Could you please help me get them? I can't walk."
He knew he could barely walk!
Amelia took a breath, unable to explain why she was so angry—angry that he didn't take care of his own body.
Probably just a doctor's habit.
Couldn't stand seeing patients abuse their own bodies.
Still, she brought the documents over to Samuel.
But Samuel felt dizzy after just one glance.
The dense text seemed to turn into flies, buzzing around before his eyes.
"Read it to me."
Amelia felt annoyed. "Read it yourself. I'm not your secretary. I'm leaving."
"Can't you just finish being a good person?"
"Who said I was a good person?"
"You're a doctor who's saved many people. Of course you're a good person."
Great, she couldn't out-talk him.
"Fine, I'll read it for you. Consider it repaying the favor for the photo studio."
"Photo studio?"
"Ask Jeremy and you'll know."
Though Samuel was curious, he didn't press further. Jeremy would tell him what happened when he returned.
Amelia pulled over a chair, opened the documents, and read them word by word to Samuel.
But after reading only one-fifth, she realized something was wrong.
These documents were internal files from the Crawford Group's Goldenvale branch, with very confidential data.
Yet he was having her, an outsider, read them to him?
Amelia was puzzled.
What kind of careless, sloppy person was Samuel?
Wasn't he afraid she'd steal their branch's trade secrets?
Being so unguarded, how did he even get to where he is today?
