Chapter 62 : What Exactly He Was Up To?
Nigel was stunned and instinctively glanced at Sherrie.
Sure enough, her eyes welled up. “Nigel, is that really how you feel?”
“I…” Nigel stammered.
But the words were already out. He could not take them back. Instead, he turned and glared at Allison, thinking she was just bitter and deliberately trying to cause trouble.
So much for meaning to make it up to her. It looked like his kindness had been wasted for nothing.
Whatever guilt he still had toward Allison disappeared. Furious, he shot back instantly, “No one asked you to speak. From now on, stay out of the Rogers family’s business. Go to your room and think about how to talk properly.”
With that, he ignored her completely, shutting the door behind him as he left with Sherrie and Ruth to discuss the next steps.
Everything Nigel had just said felt like a cruel joke.
He told Allison not to interfere in the Rogers family’s affairs, yet he had never given her a chance to be involved in the first place.
Allison didn't care what schemes they were plotting to marry Sherrie into the Lopez family.
She even found herself looking forward to seeing what kind of life that pathetic couple would end up with after the wedding.
Allison didn’t bother snooping into whatever plans Sherrie was whispering about upstairs, even though she could have easily pulled the surveillance footage from the study.
What caught her attention now was Jackson. What exactly was he up to?
Only someone as naive as Nigel would believe Jackson really felt guilty.
Jackson had treated his own son with ruthless coldness. He would never show mercy to Allison.
People like Jackson never acted without something to gain. That sudden change in his attitude had to be tied to some hidden benefit. Yet even Allison couldn't figure out what value she still had left.
Just then, a faint vibration grabbed her attention.
It was a spare phone Allison had bought on the black market. She kept it secret from the rest of the Rogers family.
Only two people ever contacted her through that number. Nova and Joe.
She had not saved Joe’s number, and the message came from an unknown sender. “Ms. Rogers, this is Joe. Sorry to bother you, but do you happen to know any remedies for external injuries?”
External injuries? Joe was a renowned doctor. Treating wounds was routine for him.
He was probably asking for something to help soothe the pain and make things more bearable for his patient.
Allison actually knew a few remedies, so she replied, “Mix equal parts of frankincense and myrrh. Grind them into a fine powder and apply it directly to the wound. It will help clear out dead tissue, promote healing, relieve pain, and stop the bleeding.”
Joe replied quickly, “Thank you.”
Just then, Nigel and Sherrie came down the stairs.
Nigel talked to her in a low voice. “Don’t go to the hospital for now. It will look bad.”
He had spent another sum of money to temporarily appease that family, but there was no guarantee it would be enough next time Sherrie made a mistake again.
Unless Sherrie got her medical license, she really couldn't keep using patients to practice.
Sherrie pouted her lips. “But what about my internship, Nigel? Am I supposed to delay graduation now…”
Nigel patted her shoulder to comfort her, “Just treat it as a break. Focus on getting things done with Ronan. Once you’re part of the Lopez family, their resources will be yours to use. Graduating will be easy.”
Hearing that, Sherrie's eyes lit up again.
Nigel let out a sigh of relief. “Thank God Allison still has some leverage with Mr. Jackson. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have had a way to cover for you.”
The idea of marrying into the Lopez family and standing above the entire Rogers clan made Sherrie so happy that she clung to Nigel’s arm and said with a bright smile, “You’re the best, Nigel. I wouldn’t have known what to do without your help.”
Nigel looked at her with affection. “You were smart enough to act when it mattered. If you hadn’t taken that step with Ronan, he wouldn’t have committed so quickly.”
They walked through the living room without noticing Allison standing secretly in the tea room.
She lowered her eyes and gently put her glass down.
Nigel’s words felt like a dull blade, cutting straight through her chest.
When she and Ronan had been caught, Nigel had not said anything like this. Her father had just passed away, and she had only been seventeen.
Ronan showed up impeccably dressed at the Lopez family banquet, but someone saw the love bites on his neck.
Everyone laughed and joked about how passionate the young couple was. They called them a perfect match, full of youthful energy. It was only natural for things to happen.
Jackson had smiled and called Allison a good girl, but his eyes had shifted, as if he thought she had deliberately seduced Ronan and exposed their affair.
After that incident, the Lopez family changed their attitude toward her, and the Rogers family did the same.
Nigel had made her kneel at her father’s grave for three days, demanding that she repent for her shameful behavior.
She could still remember the disgust and fury on his face. Yet now, when the same thing happened with Sherrie, he was like a completely different man, full of praise.
You were smart enough to act when it mattered. How could I have raised such a filthy sister? You’ve completely shamed me. The same voice. The same mouth. Yet such painfully different words. They echoed over and over in Allison’s mind, tearing apart the part of her heart she thought had already gone numb.
Even after everything, it still hurts. She was angry at their bias. Angry at the sheer injustice she received from them.
Allison tightened her grip on the glass until her nails turned pale from the pressure. Only after forcing herself to calm down did she return to her room, where she picked up that pink cashmere scarf.
