Chapter 49 Chapter 49: She Was Lying!
“Ms. Rogers, you should rest. Why are you in such a rush?” Jake asked, looking worried.
There were too many eyes at the hospital. Allison did not want to invite trouble.
She said, “Dr. Dawson, please don’t tell anyone about my medical skills.”
Jake wanted to ask why, but after thinking about it, he understood. She was young, talented, and vulnerable. That alone could make her a target.
He nodded. “I won’t say a word.”
Allison handed him a slip of paper. “If you ever need anything, you can message me.”
Jake took it with both hands, smiling brightly. “Then I’ll be bothering you a lot in the future, Ms. Rogers.”
After a moment, Allison’s expression softened. She handed him a prescription. “Dr. Dawson, Jareth’s leg was injured. Have someone turn this into a medicinal paste. Remind him to use it.”
Jake grinned. “Ms. Rogers really cares about our Jareth. Don’t worry, I’ll pass along your heartfelt message.”
“Don’t tell him it came from me,” Allison said. “I don’t want to be involved with him anymore.”
Madam Berry’s illness had been taken care of. She likely would not cross paths with Jareth again.
After being discharged, Allison went to stay with Nova to recover.
When Nova saw the wound on her face, she panicked and felt worried for Allison.
Allison said she had caught a fever and fallen on the sidewalk.
Nova did not push for details. She cleaned and treated the wound every day with shaking hands, afraid it would leave a scar.
Three days later, Nigel called. Furious, he demanded to know where Allison had been. Why did the Berrys say she had never stayed over at their mansion?
Sherrie and the others had come back from their trip. It was time for Allison to pack up and return to the Rogers household.
Before she left, Allison handed Nova the bank card Madam Berry had given her. “Take the money out and invest it. Stocks, something with growth.”
She did not need the money right now, and Nova could manage it under her name.
Nova did not want to let her go. “Ms. Allison, why go back there? You have medical skills. You can earn money on your own. Why let them treat you like this?”
Allison gave her a soft smile. “I need to take my name back. I don’t want to spend my life as a nobody with a mental health record.”
Nova could not smile anymore. There was nothing she could do. She just stood there, hurting in silence.
Allison said goodbye. “I’m off.”
She took a cab back to the Rogers residence. The moment she arrived, she saw several luxury cars parked in the yard.
Not just Nigel’s and Sherrie’s. There was also one from the Lopez family.
Inside the living room, she saw Ronan already there.
He and Sherrie were sitting on the couch. There was no sign of Nigel or Ruth.
Ronan’s face was covered in bruises. Sherrie dabbed ointment onto his wounds with a cotton swab while he winced.
Just then, Nigel came down the stairs. He looked up, ready to scold Allison.
“You finally decided to come—”
He stopped mid-sentence, and he was stunned.
Then he rushed down the stairs, taking three steps at a time, and grabbed Allison’s arm in panic.
“What… what happened to your face?”
Only then did Sherrie and Ronan notice her.
Sherrie jumped to her feet in shock and hurried over to take a closer look.
She was so focused on Allison’s face that she did not notice Ronan’s reaction at all.
He stayed stiff on the couch, head lowered, unable to look at Allison.
Allison understood immediately. He had never told them that he was the one who hurt her.
Nigel’s grip tightened. “Say something. What happened to your face?”
Allison pressed her lips together and lied. “I had a fever. I fell and hit the curb.”
Ronan could only stare at her, completely stunned.
Ronan knew Allison was coming back today, so he rushed over to check on her injuries.
He never meant to hit her. He had just lost his temper.
He had been ready to apologize. What he did not expect was for Allison to cover for him.
Instead of feeling relieved, Ronan felt even more ashamed when he faced her.
Nigel still held tightly onto Allison’s arm. “You had a fever? How did that even happen?”
Allison kept her eyes lowered. “No one left me a key, so I had to wait outside. I guess being out in the cold for too long made me sick.”
“No one left you a key?” Nigel looked confused. “Why didn’t you just call Mom?”
The moment Ruth’s name was mentioned, Sherrie quickly interrupted her. “Allison, you’re an adult. Use some common sense. Did you really have to stand out in the cold like that?”
Nigel added, clearly irritated, “Seriously. That was stupid. You couldn’t find somewhere else to go?”
She had nowhere to go and not a dime to her name. Where was she supposed to stay for three days? If Nova had not taken her in, Allison could have died from her illness, and no one would have even noticed.
But none of them thought they were at fault. To them, it was just Allison being foolish.
Sherrie continued. “So, where exactly have you been staying? Nigel and I went to the Berrys, and they said they hadn’t seen you at all.”
Ronan turned toward Allison when he heard that. He was certain she had been staying with Jareth.
The thought of her throwing herself into danger for Jareth made Ronan’s blood boil. Anger and guilt twisted together inside him.
Allison knew Sherrie was only being nosy, but she did not give her what she wanted. “I stayed with Madam Violet,” she said.
Ronan’s brow creased deeply. She was lying!
He sprang to his feet. “Allison!”
He could not keep letting her get away with it. Nigel needed to step in and put an end to it.
His sharp voice caught both Nigel’s and Sherrie’s attention. Allison looked past them and stared directly into Ronan’s eyes.
Her expression was calm, as if she did not care whether he exposed her or not.
But when his eyes landed on the scar on her face, Ronan hesitated again.
