Chapter 70 Steadily Supported Her
Felicity paused slightly, the probing look in her eyes deepening.
"Amelia, are you two still going to meet while dealing with all this gossip?"
"That's enough." William frowned slightly. "There's no need to bring this up again. I know what happened. Amelia has nothing to do with him."
"William!" Felicity looked at William with displeasure.
Indigo, who had just been shut down, said nothing and just watched them with a smile.
The Brown family was a large clan.
It started prospering from Finn's generation, and he had many children.
Quite a few people came this time.
William and Amelia had always been the focus of the family's attention. Since they had been standing here for quite a while, everyone gradually gathered around.
But only the younger generation came over - some from the direct line, some from branch families.
The older generation tactfully stayed out of it, seemingly drinking tea, playing chess, and chatting on the third floor.
But Amelia knew.
This dinner today was a trap.
Because she had an extra child, whether it was Felicity's interrogation or Indigo's troublemaking, it was all with the older generation's permission, or even their hints and suggestions.
"William."
"Amelia."
"William, Amelia, good evening!"
Several people came over - all from this generation, some cousins, some more distant relatives.
Some were already married and brought their partners.
Seeing people about to come over, Amelia spoke up: "Actually, what happened back then was quite simple."
"Just as Felicity said, the Brown Group made the technical breakthrough first, then went for the contract, because we needed to get certain things from them, and some orders had to go through them."
"Essentially, we broke through their technology blockade."
"As for the bet." Amelia lowered her eyes slightly and said, "Yes, there was one, but that was just the other party's personal interest. It wouldn't affect the cooperation outcome."
William looked down at Amelia.
That year in Seraphim, what exactly Amelia and that person said during those brief ten-plus minutes when he was called away, what specific agreement they made - he never knew.
He had only gone to confirm the contract. When he came back, he saw her jump into the icy water.
That pool of freezing water, her blood, and the child they lost - it was forever painful for both of them.
For many years after, they never mentioned what happened that day again.
And he never wanted to see her cry like that again.
"That's it?" Felicity still wasn't satisfied.
"That's it." Before Amelia could speak, William already said, "Felicity, she's not the kind of person you think she is."
Then, holding Amelia's hand, he left.
Felicity stood there with clenched fists.
Indigo beside her smiled and swirled his wine glass.
"Angry?" Indigo said with a smile. "Didn't you always have a good relationship with William? Knowing he likes Amelia, you still made him choose between you two. That hurts, doesn't it?"
Felicity glared at Indigo: "Mind your own business!"
Walking away, Amelia thought about what Felicity had just said and her behavior.
Finally, what came to mind was that sentence Felicity said - "Amelia, have you heard? Alvin is coming to Shadow City soon."
Frowning slightly, Amelia tightened her grip on her wine glass.
Because Finn had said not to wait for him, everyone gathered at a long table for dinner shortly after.
Amelia sat beside William.
Just like usual.
At the dinner table, wine flowed and conversations varied.
Midway through, an elder suddenly asked about their child.
She thought William would follow up and ask her about it, but strangely, he shut the person down.
"We'll give everyone a detailed explanation about this matter later." That was all he said.
Since he had spoken, others didn't dare ask more, at most they could only hint around the topic.
Amelia looked at William beside her, serving her soup. His face still wore that calm, unreadable expression.
Then she understood.
Although the Brown family was managed by William, there was plenty of open and hidden conflict. Right now they were still officially husband and wife, and in situations like this, he would stand on her side.
And there was what Felicity just mentioned... that child.
After entering the dining room, coats had already been taken off.
William looked at Amelia in her long sleeves and pants. Even though the style didn't show her figure, he could tell she had lost quite a bit of weight.
And she was sensitive to cold.
Placing the hot soup in front of her, he said: "Eat more."
The dinner passed quickly.
Indigo tried to probe for information but got nothing.
Neither did anyone else.
William's phone vibrated - it was a call from the old man's side.
William turned away to take the call.
At this moment, Felicity came up to Amelia again.
Felicity took a glass of white wine from a server's tray nearby and handed it to Amelia.
"Won't give me face?" Felicity asked.
Amelia said nothing, reached out to take it, smelled it - indeed it was very good white wine.
So she took a light sip.
"Try some more, I brought this back from Seraphim." Felicity said meaningfully, "Private collection, very expensive."
She said: "And very significant."
Amelia looked up at Felicity.
"Don't worry, I didn't add anything." Felicity said with a smile. "William is here, I'm not that stupid."
She looked at Amelia and said softly: "I just want to see if you can taste what's special about this wine."
Amelia frowned slightly and tasted it more carefully.
But even so, she didn't find anything special beyond its quality.
"Sorry." Amelia said softly.
But Felicity smiled.
"So you really don't know anything." Felicity said.
Leaving Amelia confused.
Just like Felicity's behavior today - puzzling.
"Tell me and I'll understand." Amelia said.
But Felicity just shook her head.
She simply raised her hand, gesturing for her to taste the wine again.
The glass was almost finished.
Amelia waved her hand: "I still need to see Grandpa later, I can't drink anymore."
"Alright." Felicity nodded.
She said: "I'll be hosting a wine tasting event soon, as my homecoming party. You and William should come together."
Amelia thought about it and nodded. The cooling-off period wasn't over yet, and she needed to appear at such occasions.
At this moment, William finished his call and came back.
He took a coat from the side and draped it over Amelia's shoulders, nodded slightly at Felicity, and the two left together.
The wind on the lake was strong at night.
Amelia shrank back.
Having just drunk wine and now facing the wind, Amelia felt slightly dizzy.
"Grandma just called to say Grandpa has already fallen asleep and can't see us today. She asked us to stay the night and see them tomorrow morning."
William's voice came from beside her. Amelia nodded groggily.
Her steps were slightly unsteady, and she swayed.
The next moment, William steadied her firmly.
