Chapter 185: Actually, She Doesn't Want You Anymore
William came to visit Lon again.
The two sat on opposite sides of the glass, looking at each other. Finally, Lon picked up the phone first.
William lowered his eyes slightly and reached for his phone as well.
"Why are you here to see me again?" Lon asked. "So, did you get divorced? Did she refuse?"
William remained calm as he said, "We're divorced."
"It's just..."
William's eyes were clouded with darkness.
"She wanted to leave from the very beginning."
That caught Lon's interest.
"So you thought you wanted to divorce her, but actually she was the one who didn't want you anymore." Lon summed it up with a cutting remark.
William didn't answer. He just remained silent.
But Lon was already laughing so hard he could barely breathe.
Actually, it was more than that—he was laughing wildly.
It took him a while to calm down a bit. Wiping his tears, he said, "I really didn't expect this would be how things ended for you two."
"I still remember that day when you knelt before me for her, and I stepped on your head and scolded you like a dog."
"I thought you two loved each other to death."
Lon laughed loudly, saying, "Turns out it wasn't that big a deal after all."
William still didn't speak.
And Lon seemed to remember something. Staring at William with malice, he said, "You only won back then because you played dirty. Otherwise, I would have destroyed her long ago!"
Then, thinking of something else, he mocked, "Do you regret saving her now? Should have just let me beat her to death? Now you're also..."
"I don't regret it." Before Lon could finish, William spoke.
"I came to see you today to make up my mind," he said.
He knew today was the day of Briar's surgery, but he also knew she wouldn't let him visit Briar.
So he came here instead.
Seeing Lon's face helped him be certain about some things in his heart.
"Make up your mind about what?" Lon asked curiously.
But William didn't answer him.
William hung up the phone. Ignoring Lon's frantic curiosity, he turned and left.
He drove all the way to the hospital and parked downstairs, staying there quietly.
He knew he wasn't welcome, so just watching from afar would be enough.
...
In the hospital.
Amelia waited anxiously, with Mia, who had just gotten off work, by her side.
After what felt like forever, the operating room doors opened and Briar was wheeled out.
Amelia immediately rushed over.
She looked at Briar lying there, then at Dash beside her.
Dash smiled and nodded. "The surgery went very well."
Only then did Amelia relax a little.
They all pushed Briar toward the ward together. Mia comforted her, "Don't worry, Amelia. As long as we take good care of her, Briar will get better and be just like any other kid."
"Plus, the adoption process has been going on for a long time now. Although it usually takes about 30 working days, if everything goes smoothly, it could be done in less than 30 days!"
Amelia nodded hard, her eyes slightly moist.
Yes, everything was getting better.
Soon enough, Briar would recover, and then, once the adoption process was complete, they would become a real family.
They arrived at the general ward area, where Amelia and the others saw Jeffrey and York standing there.
The two had been talking about something, but stopped when they saw them approaching.
"We came to see Briar," York said.
Jeffrey nodded vigorously.
Amelia didn't think much of it. Briar's surgery had gone well, and she was in a good mood.
Dash also took off his mask and nodded to them both, especially to York. "The surgery went very well. Normally, she can be discharged in 5-10 days."
Everyone present breathed a sigh of relief.
Although Briar's condition could be fixed with surgery, everyone there had been very worried about her.
"This calls for a celebration," Jeffrey said with a smile. "Let's have dinner together!"
Amelia shook her head helplessly. "Let's wait until Briar is discharged."
Dash nodded in agreement.
Meanwhile, Mia looked at York with mixed feelings.
She always felt that something had happened after she went to the bathroom that day. She remembered that Amelia had never accepted York before.
But...
Mia looked at Amelia. If Amelia liked him, that wouldn't be bad.
At least he was more reliable than William.
Everyone was happy. The last rays of sunset shone into the ward, filling the room with warmth.
Meanwhile, William waited quietly downstairs until he saw several people come down for dinner, looking quite happy. William knew that Briar's surgery had been successful.
He opened the car door and got out, asked for the ward number, went upstairs, and stood at the door looking in.
Then he saw Amelia and York sitting by the bed. She was wiping Briar's hands while York held the basin for her.
"After Briar is discharged, she'll probably need professional caregivers, nurses, and such. My family knows some reliable caregivers we've worked with for years, or you could ask the Wilson family to recommend someone. Their recommendations should be good too," York said.
Amelia didn't refuse. While wiping Briar's hands, she replied, "Okay, I'll meet with them when the time comes and see how it goes."
Their conversation was casual, and they seemed to get along easily.
Just like an ordinary couple chatting about daily life.
William watched all this quietly. Finally, he lowered his eyes and looked away.
He didn't go in to disturb them, but turned and left.
As William was leaving, Amelia's hand paused slightly as she wiped Briar's arm. She glanced at the glass in the distance, then looked away again.
She thought she had just seen a figure reflected in the glass.
But she must have been mistaken.
...
Days flowed by like water.
They passed, repeating day after day.
During this time, Amelia stayed by Briar's side constantly, moving all her work to the ward.
Briar recovered day by day.
She gradually became more lively.
As York visited more frequently these days, along with Xyla and Otis's frequent visits, a mischievous glint occasionally flashed in Briar's round eyes.
One day, Briar secretly asked Amelia.
"Amelia, are you going to date Mr. Jenkins?"
Amelia blinked. How did such a young child know about dating?
"I secretly heard Mia and Mr. Adams talking. They said you want Mr. Jenkins to be my dad," Briar said with wide eyes.
Well then.
Amelia thought for a moment and asked, "So can Briar accept him?"
Briar thought about it, then nodded. "He's okay. Mr. York Jenkins has a good temper, he's handsome, he's good at drawing, and his cat just learned something new recently. Mr. Otis Jenkins showed me a video."
Amelia laughed and kissed Briar's forehead. "You just love his cat that much."
Briar nodded and said, "Whiskers is super cute!"
Just as the two were enjoying their moment together, there was a knock at the door.
