Chapter 118: The Last Time, No More Disturbance
It seemed that only by hearing these words could he be sure that his heart was at peace.
William left the place.
Later, he went to many other places.
Finally, he stopped at the kindergarten entrance.
He didn't get out of the car, just watched from a distance as the children played inside the kindergarten.
Briar was very quiet, just drawing with her friend nearby.
Watching this, William felt very calm inside.
……
On the other side.
Amelia, wearing a mask, was discussing with the designer about the performance outfit to be used in The Sound of Heaven finals.
Just then, her phone rang.
"Sorry." Amelia said, taking out her phone.
It was William's call.
Amelia's heart suddenly tightened.
Today was the 30th day of the divorce cooling-off period. They should get the divorce certificate tomorrow. Why was he calling at this time?
Could it be... he changed his mind?
If so, then what should she... do?
In that instant, Amelia thought of many things. It wasn't until the ringtone almost stopped that she pressed the answer button.
Amelia walked out of the room and came to the hallway outside.
"What is it?" Amelia asked.
"Tonight, let's have dinner together." William's voice came through. He said, "Bring Briar along. I've booked a restaurant."
Amelia frowned slightly. She wanted to refuse, but then thought that in these last moments, she couldn't let anything go wrong.
Thinking of this, she said, "Why?"
"We're getting the divorce certificate tomorrow. For the next few months, we probably won't have another occasion like this to gather together."
Amelia looked up at the modern art painting on the hallway wall.
He meant, a farewell dinner?
Amelia thought about whether to go or not.
William on the other end didn't speak either. Both sides were quiet.
Finally, William said, "One last time."
"Amelia, after this meal, until we remarry, if there's nothing urgent, I won't take the initiative to find you and Briar again."
Amelia's lips pressed together slightly.
"William, you better keep your word," she said.
She would never remarry William, so if he could keep his promise, this would be a true farewell dinner.
"I'll keep my word," William said softly.
With that, William sent Amelia the time and location, then hung up the phone.
He looked toward the kindergarten not far outside the car window.
Actually, he didn't know why he was doing this either.
Isabella would die in a few months, and then he would remarry Amelia.
And he needed some strength to support him through the coming period.
William looked up. Inside, Briar was still drawing. She was painting with her good friend, looking very happy.
He couldn't help but smile warmly.
On the other side, Amelia frowned deeply.
After thinking, she called Mia and told her about this.
"Who knows what he's up to," Mia said. She was off today and was at home munching on fruit. "As long as he's willing to get the divorce certificate with you tomorrow, that's fine."
Amelia thought that made sense too.
"Right now, I'm just worried that this time he's calling you over because he wants you to change your mind. That would be the real trouble," Mia said.
"Change my mind?" Amelia thought this was ridiculous. Isabella was still waiting.
"But I think that's unlikely," Mia said, putting down what she was holding and picking up the remote. "If he shows any sign of that, just firmly refuse."
"I remember you kept a backup plan. If he doesn't agree to divorce, you'll file for divorce in court."
"Use that if necessary."
Hearing Mia's words, Amelia thought it made sense.
She just couldn't understand the point of William's behavior.
"Men, you know, they probably want to reflect on the past. That's normal. Plus, doesn't he want to wait until Isabella dies and then remarry you? He probably wants to keep you stable, so you don't run away," Mia analyzed matter-of-factly.
Amelia nodded. That made sense too.
"Wait, you're not going to remarry him, are you!" Mia immediately sat up straight.
"How could that be possible," Amelia said, looking at the artwork nearby. "Mia, that day in the hospital stairwell, my heart already died."
Mia let out a long sigh and quickly said, "That's my fault. I shouldn't have brought that up again."
"It's fine. I have Briar now," Amelia replied.
"Okay, anyway, just deal with it for now. I'm afraid if you don't go, he'll pull something tomorrow," Mia advised. "I'll have Dash stake out nearby. If there's any problem, just call him directly."
Amelia nodded.
After hanging up, Amelia saw there was still some time, so she continued discussing the performance outfit with the designer.
This time the costume was somewhat complicated. Many things had to be just right.
"Thank you for your hard work," Amelia said after finally reaching an agreement. "I'm counting on you this time."
"Don't worry," the other person said with a smile.
They had already worked together on four shows, and both were very satisfied with each other.
This was mutual achievement.
After exchanging a few more pleasantries, Amelia saw it was about time, so she changed clothes and went to pick up Briar from school.
Soon, Amelia's car arrived at the kindergarten.
Briar was waiting inside.
"Amelia!" Briar called out immediately.
Amelia hugged her tightly.
"Briar, let me ask you something," Amelia said, looking at Briar at eye level. "William invited us to a farewell dinner. Are you willing to go?"
If Briar didn't want to, then she would refuse.
"What do you think, Amelia?" Briar neither agreed nor objected.
Amelia looked into Briar's eyes and said, "I think it depends on whether you like the idea or not. If you don't like it, we won't go."
"Did he say something to you?" Briar suddenly asked sneakily.
This was the first time Amelia had seen Briar with this expression, and she was directly amused.
"Yes," Amelia nodded and mentioned William's promise not to actively seek them out in the future.
Only then did Briar understand.
"Then I'll go," Briar said with a smile. "I'll just treat it as playing with the neighbor kid for an evening."
"Briar is so good," Amelia kissed Briar's forehead.
Briar also kissed Amelia's cheek.
The two were being affectionate when suddenly, a large shadow appeared beside them.
They both looked up together and saw William standing nearby.
The smiles on their faces gradually disappeared.
William felt somewhat sad.
However, he still greeted the little girl warmly, "Briar."
Briar thought for a moment, then responded, "Hello."
William nodded slightly.
He straightened up and looked at Amelia, "Let's go."
Amelia also nodded and walked toward the car, holding Briar's hand.
"Take my car," William said.
But Amelia gave him a cold look.
The scene of Briar being frightened in William's car last time was still vivid in her mind.
"William, I will never let Briar ride in your car again in this lifetime."
William was slightly stunned, then nodded and said nothing more.
They drove off.
The two cars stopped outside Shadow City's largest oceanview restaurant.
Amelia got out of the car holding Briar's hand and met up with William.
The group entered the restaurant together. At that moment, a soft chime rang out.
It was already 5 PM.
