Chapter 4
Since we’d broken up, I didn’t need to keep doing deliveries anymore.
When my boss heard over the phone that I wanted to quit, he asked in surprise: “What’s wrong, Willa? You were doing so well, why quit so suddenly? Aren’t you making money for your boyfriend’s treatment anymore?”
“He’s better,” I forced a smile. “Completely better.”
“Oh wow! That’s amazing!” My boss’s voice was full of relief. “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger-he’ll definitely treat you twice as well now! Your suffering finally paid off!”
Suffering paid off?
I smiled bitterly to myself.
Right, wasn’t it Reed who originally recommended me for this delivery job-working in the sun and rain, ten hours a day?
Inder the guise of “helping me find steady work instead of running around doing three part-time jobs,” it was actually to make me “suffer more” as evenge for his precious Sage.
At least it was all over now.
After packing all my belongings in the shabby rental apartment, the next very day I went to the city’s most luxurious hotel.
dragged my suitcases through the lobby, looking completely out of place and immediately attracting stares from everyone around.
Well, well! Look who it is! If it isn’t our hardworking delivery queen, Willa Lynn!”
A sharp, nasty, sickeningly familiar voice called out behind me.
t was Sage.
tanding beside her was her usual gang of sorority cronies.
didn’t stop, just kept dragging my stuff forward.
But Sage wasn’t about to let me go. She brought her friends over, surrounding me like I was some zoo animal.
Look who we have here!”
age dramatically pinched her nose, as if I smelled bad.
How does some delivery girl dare set foot in the Ritz-Carlton?”
Where’s security? Security! Has this hotel’s standards gotten so low? You let any trash walk in here? So disgusting!”
ler friends immediately chimed in:
Exactly! She’s filthy-don’t let her dirty the carpet!”
Sage, remember? The chick who’s all high and mighty, right? Swore she was too cool for cash!”
‘What now-disabled boyfriend just dumped her and now she’s desperate to bag a sugar daddy here?”
As she finished, harsh laughter echoed through the lobby.
Listening to their twisted lies, I stared coldly at the ringleader Sage and said through gritted teeth:
Fuck you.”
“What the fuck did you say?!” Sage’s face darkened as she suddenly shoved me hard!
Caught off guard, I staggered backward from her push and slammed into a huge display case filled with expensive wines and spirits.
The massive impact made the entire case shake violently!
“CRASH!”
With the continuous sound of shattering glass, dozens of bottles of expensive vintage wines and top-shelf whiskey cascaded down like a waterfall, crashing to the floor and instantly smashing to pieces.
The enormous noise shocked the entire lobby-everyone stared in stunned silence at the destruction.
After a brief moment of quiet, people erupted in even more piercing laughter.
“Holy shit! Look at that! The peasant’s in deep shit now!”
“Quick, count them! See how many bottles the hillbilly smashed!”
“One bottle of Château Lafite, two bottles of Romanée-Conti, three bottles of rare Macallan… Jesus, how much is this worth?”
“That’s gotta be worth several million, right? I bet even if she sold herself, she couldn’t afford to pay for it!”
“Can’t afford it?” Sage let out a scornful question, then walked over to me with a cold smile.
“Easy! Get on your knees and lick up all the wine on the floor. For every drop you lick, I’ll pay for one drop!”
This vicious idea immediately got everyone’s approval:
“Yeah, get on your knees and lick!”
‘Let’s see how the delivery queen licks floors!”
Several of Sage’s lackeys approached with nasty grins, roughly grabbing my arms and trying to force me down toward the floor covered in glass shards and expensive liquor!
‘Get on your knees right now!”
‘Lick! Or we’ll call the cops and have you thrown in jail!”
Suddenly, overwhelming humiliation and pain crashed over me.
My arms were twisted behind my back, my hair was grabbed, and my head was being forced down.
Finally, I used every ounce of strength to lift my head and spoke in a hoarse voice:
‘I’m Willa Lynn! The sole heir of Lynn Corporation! Lincoln Lynn is my father!”
