Chapter 29 Stained Loyalty
Chapter 29 Stained Loyalty
"Cassian, we have to try," Kira pleaded, her voice cracking with raw emotion as the portals swirled open in the warehouse, echoes materializing like ghosts from the fog. Her dark eyes, rimmed with unshed tears, locked onto mine, begging for understanding. The new ally we'd just met—journalist, fighter, sister to our enemy—clutched that photo of Hale like it was a lifeline, her knuckles white. "He's my brother. Whatever Valeria did to him... it's not him. Not really. Please, help me bring him back. I lost him once—I can't do it again."
Ivy's hand tightened in mine, her body pressed close, that familiar spark from her touch cutting through the chaos in my mind. My heart twisted with conflicting feelings: pity for Kira, love for Ivy, and a deep-seated fear that this could drag us back into the cycles we'd fought so hard to escape. "Kira... I get it. Family's everything. But Hale—he tried to trap us in an illusion. If he's corrupted, saving him could doom us all." My voice was rough, laced with the exhaustion of too many betrayals. "We've lost friends, timelines... I can't risk Ivy. She's my world."
Ivy turned to me, her eyes shining with tears and fierce determination. "Cassian, listen to her. If Hale's her brother, and he's the key... maybe saving him seals the core for good. We've always chosen love over fear. That's what broke the cycles." She squeezed my hand, her voice soft but steady, full of the emotion that had carried us through hell. "I love you—for being the man who fights for what's right, even when it hurts."
Ben stepped forward, his massive frame blocking an advancing echo as he swung a metal pipe scavenged from the warehouse floor. "She's right, Cass. But we do this smart. No rushing in blind." He grunted as the echo dissolved under his blow, shadows scattering like smoke.
Lena nodded, her eyes scanning the portals. "Aris, can your device track Hale's signal? Pinpoint where he's coming from?"
Aris tapped furiously at her scanner, sweat beading on her forehead. "Yeah... it's strong. He's manifesting through the core's remnants. If we overload it with... I don't know, our bond or something... we might pull him out without the corruption."
Elijah leaned on his cane, his voice calm amid the storm. "Kira, tell us more about your brother. What was he like before? Emotions anchor us—perhaps his love for you can fight Valeria's hold."
Kira wiped her eyes, her voice trembling with grief and hope. "He was... kind. A tech whiz, always tinkering with gadgets. We grew up rough—lost our parents young. He protected me. Then he vanished, ranting about 'loops' and 'a woman with green eyes.' Valeria. If we can reach that part of him... please."
The echoes closed in, their whispers turning to shrieks. "We don't have time to debate!" I yelled, shoving Ivy behind a crate as one lunged. "Kira, stay back! Ben, Lena—flank them!"
The fight erupted in the dim warehouse light, shadows clashing with flesh. I punched through an echo, feeling its cold essence dissolve, but more poured from the portals. Kira fought like a demon, her notebook discarded, using a broken board to swing at the apparitions. "For my brother!" she cried, tears streaming down her face.
Ivy grabbed my arm mid-swing. "Cassian, the device—Aris, give it to me!" She snatched the scanner, her fingers flying over the controls. "If our bond powered the purge before, maybe it can target Hale now. Hold my hand—channel it!"
I nodded, emotion surging—love for her bravery, fear for her safety. "Ivy... be careful. I love you too much to lose you." Our hands intertwined, that electric connection flaring brighter than ever, the scanner humming in response.
The portals stabilized, and Hale stepped through—tall, disheveled, his eyes glowing with Valeria's green tint. "You fools," he snarled, his voice a mix of his own and hers. "The core's mine. Brother? Sister? Pathetic ties."
Kira stepped forward, her voice breaking. "Jax—Hale, it's me. Kira. Remember the old apartment? You fixed my bike when I crashed it. You said family sticks. Fight her! Come back to me!"
Hale hesitated, the green flicker wavering. "Kira... no. She's too strong." Pain etched his face, emotion cracking through the corruption.
"Now!" Aris shouted. Ivy and I poured our feelings into the scanner—love, memories of our touches, our escapes. The device beamed energy at Hale, wrapping him in light.
He screamed, collapsing as the green faded. Kira rushed to him, cradling his head. "Jax? Please..."
His eyes cleared, normal now. "Kira... I'm sorry. She used me." Tears flowed as they hugged, sibling love mending what was broken.
The portals closed, echoes vanishing. Ben clapped Hale on the back. "Welcome back, kid. You okay?"
Hale nodded weakly. "Yeah... thanks to you all. The core—it's stable now. No more illusions."
Relief washed over us, but the adrenaline lingered, turning to something hotter between Ivy and me. As the group debriefed with Kira and Hale, Ivy pulled me into a side room—stacked with old crates, dimly lit by a single bulb.
"Cassian," she whispered, her voice husky with emotion and need. "That was too close. I need to feel you. To know we're safe, real." Tears brimmed in her eyes, her hands already tugging at my shirt.
"I know, love," I murmured, kissing her deeply, tasting the salt of her tears. "I love you—for your strength, your heart. Let me show you." My voice was thick, emotion overwhelming as I lifted her onto a crate, our clothes coming off in a frenzy of touches.
"You're everything," she said, her fingers tracing my chest, nails lightly scratching. "Touch me... please."
I kissed down her neck, to her breasts, sucking a nipple until she arched, moaning softly. "Cassian... yes. I love how you make me feel." Her voice broke with feeling, love pouring out.
My hand slid between her legs, fingers circling her clit, slipping inside her wetness. "So ready for me," I groaned, emotion making my touch tender yet urgent. She gasped, hips bucking. "Come for me, Ivy. Let go."
She shattered with a sob, "I love you!" Waves of pleasure crashing over her.
I entered her then, thrusting deep, our bodies syncing in rhythm. "Feel my love," I whispered, pounding harder as she begged. "Through every cycle... you're mine."
"Yes... harder! I love you so much!" We climaxed together, cries echoing, bodies trembling in shared ecstasy, tears mixing on our cheeks.
We held each other after, panting. "This is us," she said softly. "Free."
But as we rejoined the group, Hale's device beeped. "Wait... signal incoming. From... Roderick?"
A hologram flickered—Roderick, our ancestor, looking aged but alive. "Heirs, you did well. But one loose end: a new guardian. Meet Thorne's lost child—my granddaughter, hidden in time."
The warehouse door burst open, revealing a new character: a young woman with silver-streaked hair like Valeria's, but eyes kind like Elara's. "I'm Mira," she said, voice steady but emotional. "Your half-sister, Cassian. Sent to protect the core."
Plot twist: Mira revealed she'd been watching, guiding us subtly. "But Hale's purge opened a rift. Echoes are evolving—into something worse. We seal it now, or lose everything."
As new portals cracked open, more advanced echoes emerging, Ivy grabbed my hand. "Cassian... ready?"
