Chapter 41 The Meeting
Lila's POV - 6:47 AM
I woke up to my phone buzzing insistently.
For a disorienting moment, I thought it was the alarm. Then I saw the caller ID: Eleanor Cole.
At 6:47 in the morning.
This couldn't be good.
"Hello?" My voice was rough with sleep.
"Lila, I need you at the medical facility immediately," Eleanor said, her tone clipped. "There's been a development with Adrian."
My heart stopped. "What kind of development? Is he okay?"
"Dr. Chen will explain. Marcus is already on his way to get you. Be ready in ten minutes."
She hung up before I could ask more questions.
I scrambled out of bed, throwing on clothes with shaking hands. My mind raced through worst-case scenarios had Adrian's condition worsened? Was he dying? Had he woken up?
Marcus arrived exactly ten minutes later, his expression grim but not panicked.
"What happened?" I demanded as we hurried to the car.
"Dr. Chen noticed increased brain activity overnight," Marcus said. "She thinks he's close to regaining consciousness, but there's a complication."
"What complication?"
"She'll explain. Just—prepare yourself. This might change everything about today."
Medical Facility - 7:15 AM
Dr. Chen met us in the same consultation room as before. This time, James was there too, along with Eleanor and a man I didn't recognize tall, silver-haired, with the bearing of someone important.
"Ms. James," Dr. Chen said. "This is Dr. Raymond Ashford. He's a leading specialist in traumatic brain injury and coma recovery."
Dr. Ashford nodded politely but didn't waste time on pleasantries. "Ms. James, I've been reviewing Adrian's case remotely for the past forty-eight hours. His recovery has been remarkable much faster than we typically see with injuries of this severity. However, he's reached a critical threshold."
"What does that mean?" I asked.
"It means his brain is fighting to wake up, but his body isn't quite ready," Dr. Chen explained. "The continued sedation at this level is actually preventing natural recovery. We need to reduce it significantly and allow him to surface naturally. But there's a risk."
"What risk?"
Dr. Ashford stepped forward. "When patients emerge from medically induced comas, especially after significant trauma, they can experience what we call 'breakthrough agitation.' Confusion, aggression, fear. The brain knows something is wrong but can't process why. In Adrian's case, given his injuries and the circumstances surrounding them, this could be particularly severe."
Eleanor spoke up. "Dr. Ashford has recommended that we transport Adrian to a specialized facility in Switzerland. They have experience managing high-risk emergence cases and can provide around-the-clock monitoring in a controlled environment."
"Switzerland?" I repeated. "You want to move him out of the country?"
"We want to give him the best chance at full recovery," James said. "The facility in Zurich is the finest in the world for cases like his. And it's secure far from Stirling-Hale's reach."
"When would this happen?"
"Today," Dr. Ashford said. "The medical transport is already being arranged. We'd leave this evening, which means—"
"Which means your meeting with Ethan needs to happen this morning," Eleanor finished. "Before we move Adrian. Because once we're in Switzerland, we'll be in lockdown. No communication with the outside world until the situation is resolved."
My mind reeled. "You're asking me to wire up and meet with Ethan in—" I checked my watch, "less than four hours, so you can immediately fly Adrian out of the country?"
"I'm sorry about the timeline," Dr. Chen said gently. "But Adrian's brain activity spiked dramatically around 3 AM. He's trying to wake up, Lila. And the longer we keep him sedated at current levels, the more we risk permanent cognitive damage."
I looked at Marcus, who nodded confirmation.
"The operation was always scheduled for today anyway," he said. "This just means we move up the timeline. You'll meet Ethan at 11 AM instead of 2 PM."
"Can I see him?" I asked. "Adrian. Before before all of this happens?"
Dr. Chen glanced at Dr. Ashford, who nodded. "Briefly. But Ms. James—you should know that he may respond to your voice. His vitals spike whenever someone mentions your name. On some level, even unconscious, he knows you matter."
Adrian's Room - 7:33 AM
He looked the same as yesterday pale, bruised, surrounded by machines.
But there was something different. A tension in his body that hadn't been there before, like a coiled spring waiting to release.
I sat beside him and took his hand, careful of the IV lines.
"Hey," I whispered. "It's me again. Lila."
His heart rate increased slightly on the monitor. Dr. Chen had been right.
"They're saying you're trying to wake up. That you're fighting your way back." My voice cracked. "I need you to keep fighting, okay? Because I have so much to tell you. About the baby, about Ethan, about everything that's happened. And I need you to be awake to hear it."
I squeezed his hand. "They're taking you to Switzerland today. Some fancy facility where they can help you wake up safely. And I don't know when I'll see you again. But I need you to know something."
I leaned closer, my lips near his ear.
"I love you," I whispered. "I know we never said it. I know everything between us happened so fast and so wrong. But I love you, Adrian Cole. And our baby is going to love you too. So you need to come back. You need to wake up and meet your child."
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then so faint I almost missed it.his fingers tightened around mine.
Just like before. Just enough to know it wasn't my imagination.
Tears spilled down my cheeks. "I'll be waiting," I promised. "However long it takes."
