Chapter 10 the escape

Chapter 10 the escape

The darkness of the cramped service hallway swallowed us whole, thick with the smell of stale cleaning supplies and motor oil. Adrian didn't slow, his grip a painful vice around my wrist. The only light came from faint strips of emergency bulbs running along the floor, illuminating chipped paint and concrete.
A low, vibrating hum started to rise from the very bones of the building the sound of massive steel security systems engaging. The lockdown.
We scrambled down a narrow, utilitarian service stairwell. My sensible work heels clattered awkwardly on the metal steps, a loud, desperate rhythm in the silence.
"Why the service line?" I gasped, trying to keep up.
"Separate network, slower to lock down," Adrian bit out, his voice sharp with focus. He took the turns fast, counting the floors. "Less surveillance. They'll expect us to try the main elevator or the front entrance."
We burst onto the level B1 of the parking garage. The vast concrete cavern was eerily quiet save for the echo of our shoes. Adrian pulled me toward a dark, powerful silhouette parked in a restricted zone: his matte black Aston Martin.
The internal hum was now a grinding, deafening roar. A red light flashed near a concrete pillar, followed by a synthesized female voice booming through the garage speakers: "Corporate Security Breach Detected. All exits are now sealed. Report to nearest security station."
"Move!" Adrian barked, slamming the remote lock button. The car lights flashed once, and he practically shoved me into the passenger seat before vaulting into the driver's side.
He didn't bother with the seatbelt. The engine roared to life with a primal snarl, and he spun the wheel, sending the expensive sports car flying toward the exit ramp.
The parking gate barrier, a massive black bar, was dropping. Adrian didn't brake. He floored it, and the Aston Martin slipped beneath the bar with only inches to spare, scraping the undercarriage with a sickening crunch. A second later, the heavy steel barricade hit the ground behind us with a resonant clang. We were out.
He merged onto the city streets, driving fast, but with a terrifying precision that suggested he was racing against time, not traffic. The city lights blurred into streaks of color.
My breath finally caught up to me, shaking. "Where are we going?" I asked, shouting over the roar of the engine. "Adrian, you need to tell me. They've framed us for a leak, Ethan is working with Stirling-Hale... where is safe?"
He kept his eyes glued to the road, his knuckles white on the leather-wrapped steering wheel. The polished control he usually exuded was strained thin.
"Somewhere they won't think to look," he finally replied, his voice flat.
"And where is that?" I demanded, turning to face him.
He glanced at me for the briefest moment, his grey eyes piercing the darkness of the car's interior. "You need to trust me, Lila. We are exposed right now."
"I did trust Ethan, and he just sold me out to destroy you," I shot back, the raw betrayal making my voice tremble. "You have to give me more than blind faith."
He accelerated, taking a sharp turn that pressed me into the side of the door. "This is not about faith, Lila. This is about time. Every second we spend talking, we're risking being tracked. The priority is establishing a secure perimeter before that footage hits the news cycle."
He drove us deeper into the city, away from the glittering downtown core and toward the older, darker industrial districts. The streets became narrower, the brick buildings taller, casting long, claustrophobic shadows.
"What about the leak? Can we stop the footage?" I asked, pulling out my phone.
"Ethan said it was scheduled," Adrian replied, his jaw flexing. "That means it's automated. It's likely tied to a dead man's switch. By the time we could find the source, the damage would be done. We focus on damage control and finding the link between Ethan and my late business partner's cover-up. That’s the real target."
I was about to ask him again about the destination when a blinding set of lights appeared in my side mirror, closing fast.
"Company security," Adrian muttered, his eyes narrowing. "They locked the building, but they didn't lock the external assets."
He gripped the gearshift, preparing to push the car harder, but as we entered a dark, tight underpass, a dilapidated, flatbed truck suddenly swerved out from a hidden loading dock.
"Adrian, watch out!" I screamed, but it was too late.
The world shattered into a cacophony of screeching metal, grinding tires, and the terrible, deafening impact of solid, sudden force. The airbags deployed instantly, slamming into my face with suffocating intensity.
Then, nothing. Silence, thick and absolute. The taste of dust, ozone, and copper in my mouth. My head swam in a strange, black fog.
I could feel the pressure of the deployed airbag against my chest, smell the burning rubber, but I couldn't move. My hand fumbled for Adrian, reaching across the center console.
"A-Adrian?" My voice was a choked, weak croak.
He didn't answer. I could just make out his silhouette, slumped against the steering wheel, unmoving. The world tilted violently, and then, the comforting, blessed darkness consumed me entirely.
