Chapter Twenty Three: The Board Meeting

Chapter Twenty Three: The Board Meeting

“We are voting you off the board!” My lips tip up in a smile. I was anticipating something like this to happen but I didn't know it would happen quite like this. This is just going to make my work that much easier.

I walk to the head of the table and take a seat, looking at all of them like the trash they are.

“Is that all?” My face takes on a bored expression.

Matthew’s face turns a deeper shade of red. “Did you not hear what I just said?”

“I did.” I reply.

“So, don't you have anything to say?” He sputters.

“Why were you even late?” He tries again.

“I thought you didn't know about that, you are so eager to kick me off the board aren't you? If you really want to know, I was getting a new outfit for work.”

Angry murmurs start to hum around me. I even hear a, “spoiled brat.” thrown at out for me to hear. At least that tells me how they view me.

I stare at my nails, taking note of the chipped off paint. I should have gotten a manicure when I dyed my hair yesterday.

“Are you listening?” He hollers.

“Unless I suddenly became deaf in the last five minutes, unfortunately yes. But I seriously wish I was so I didn't need to listen to your drivel.”

He is furious right now. His breath comes out in puffs and his face is so red, I'm afraid he might have a heart attack. The other members of the board are not happy either. The wave of their anger pulses almost like a visible thing.

“How could you speak to us this way? Have you no respect?”

“I give respect to those who deserve it. The question here is, do you? I have barely walked into this meeting for one minute and you all have disrespected me in more ways than I can count, throwing allegations at me without allowing me to defend them then threatening to vote me out as the CEO of my own company. The absolute audacity!”

My angry tirade mellows them a bit. But Matthews, ever the pest, recovers quickly.

“You gave us no choice! The decisions you have made about this company have been appalling. We were never even made aware that Me Gregory was removed from his position as-”

“What do you mean by removed? He stepped down fair and square. I have the letter of resignation in his handwriting to prove it.”

Yesterday, in the office before Ethan came in, I had convinced Greg to sign off on his resignation letter with the excuse that I was afraid the members of the board wouldn't support me.

“You can look it through if you like.” I stretch out the piece of paper.

“Give me that!” He stomps over to me and snatches the letter into his meaty palms.

His eyes widen. “That's impossible! Gregory wouldn't just resign.”

I smirk, “Is there anything wrong with his resignation?”

“Of course there is,” He snaps.

“He resigned without informing me.”

I place my elbows on the table and link my fingers under my chin. “Oh? I didn't know you were in charge of human resources, Mr Matthew. Is there any reason he should have informed you in particular?”

Everyone's eyes rest on him in suspicion. They are all greedy bastards guilty of the same crime but that also means they did not trust each other. I can leverage this fact.

“O-of course, I meant he didn't inform the board, as a collective. He stammers.

“What I'm trying to say is that we should have been informed. Important matters such as the resignation of the CEO should be discussed before actions are taken. Given that he didn't even select someone to take over from him.”

“What are you talking about? Matthews? The decision wasn't made without proper consideration. A replacement was made. Me.”

“You? Ha! You're obviously not qualified enough.” He turns up his nose at me.

“And why would I be unqualified?” I arch an eyebrow upward.

“Last time I checked, this was still my bloody company.” My voice has dropped low, my tone dangerously cold. Everybody freezes. The chatter comes to a stop and the room becomes deathly silent.

I continue, “I put my husband there and I can remove him any time I like.” I make sure to make eye contact with each and every man seated in the room, they fidget in their seats.

When my gaze lands on Matthews, he is the only one with a smug expression on his face. Like he has a secret he knows that no one else does.

“Regardless of the fact, Mrs Smith you-”

“It's Ms Greyson.” I cut him off.

“That's the way I wish to be addressed officially.” I offer him a condescending smile.

Matthew’s hands ball into fists and he says through a clenched jaw. Good, my name reminds him of his place- beneath me. “Ms Greyson,” He says.

“Shouldn't your husband be here?”

“Why would he be? My presence is sufficient. Besides, he is…….. preoccupied at the moment.” I smirk, suddenly remembering the key card to the hotel room that is sitting in my purse. Last night, Cassidy asked what the key card was for when she saw it in my purse.

Last night……..
“Um, Daphne? Won't your asshole of a husband husband be worried about you not coming home?”

“Trust me, the last thing he will be worried about is me. He has…..plans tomorrow.” Then go on to tell her about the reservation they made at coincidentally, this very hotel. By the time had finished explaining the other issues, Cassidy was furious. Of course, I didn't tell her about the baby. She would most probably go on a murdering spree.

“Don't worry, Cass he'll get what's coming to him they all will. Starting tomorrow.” I smiled mysteriously.

When she asked what I meant by that, I just said it was the first stage of my revenge.

Present day………

They definitely won't be coming for the meeting, especially after I told Sarah to call home and pretend to leave a message that the meeting with the board has been moved to the next day.

“Very well, we can address the issues that are pressing.”

“You have barely been made CEO for twenty four hours and a scandal like this is the result.” He points at the newspaper.

“Our stocks are plummeting and many clients are cancelling their appointments with us. Who wants to work with a PR firm that’s owner is causing a scandal of their own.”

“Is that all?” This conversation is already making me bored. I can see Greg's hands all over this issue.

“Is that all?” A board member with a thin face and a droopy mustache, asks incredulously.

“I don't see any reason why this is a problem. It's actually a good thing.”

“A good thing! Do you not understand what is going on? You are costing us the entire company just because you couldn't be a decent woman.” Another one yells. The room has descended into chaos now, everyone is loudly and shouting at me.

“This is why women are never suited for roles like this.” One of them says. I arch an eyebrow. Sexist much? I take note of the board member in particular that said that.

“Enough! Mathew bangs his fist on the table, the noise makes everyone quiet. I see, they have chosen Matthew to be the new board member.

He turns to me with a triumphant smile on this face. “I'm afraid we have to vote you out, Ms Greyson. I-”

“Says who?” A figure walks into the office and everyone is shocked.

The person that comes in is…….
