Episode 45 — The Escape That Came Too Late
Episode 45 — The Escape That Came Too Late
“I can’t sleep. Maybe... maybe this is the only chance I’ll ever get anymore.”
Rae whispered to herself, her eyes still fixed on the tightly closed door. It was well past midnight. The digital clock on the nightstand showed 2:46 AM.
But her body was too alert to let sleep win....
She sat at the edge of the bed, feet dangling, the soles of her feet touching the cold floor. The air in the room pressed down on her, even though the window was shut tight.
“If that door can open... then why am I still here?”
She stared at the doorknob like it was a riddle.
Slowly, Rae stood up. She pulled on a dark hoodie that had been hanging on the chair. Tied her hair up loosely, then grabbed a pair of flat shoes from under the bed.
In her hand, she held a small flashlight. She didn’t want to make a sound.
She opened her bedroom door slowly, so slowly it barely made a noise.
'It’s so quiet. No one’s around...' she thought.
The hallway outside was silent. The main lights were off. Only a few small ones along the ceiling stayed on, just enough to see the path, but not enough to see where it ended.
Rae walked forward. Her heartbeat was fast... Not because she was afraid of getting caught, but because she wasn’t sure of herself.
Her steps carried her to the back of the house. She knew the way by now. Every turn, every wall that was too smooth to lean on, every thick carpet that softened her footsteps.
At the end of the hallway stood a wooden door. Tall, old, and quiet like a guard of time.
The back storage room....
Rae took a slow breath. Her left hand turned the handle. The door opened softly, with a small creak from the hinges. But it was enough to make her hold her breath.
She stepped inside....
The air was damp and colder. The flashlight in her hand lit up old boards and forgotten furniture. But her eyes were fixed on one spot at the far end of the room,
the wall where she knew there was a gap....
A narrow opening between wooden planks. Behind it, she could see a faint glow of light from outside.
Rae walked closer. She touched the rough surface with her fingers.
Then pushed slowly....
The plank moved, just a little, but enough for her slender body to slip through.
Fresh air came in.
Colder. Cleaner. Free.
“Just a little more...” she thought.
Half of her body was already outside.
And then suddenly.......
“Rae.”
One word.
The voice hit her like a hammer that stopped time.
She froze... Didn’t dare to move.
Her heart was stuck in her throat. Slowly, she turned her head.
Kenny was standing at the door of the storage room...
He wore a gray t-shirt and soft house pants. His hair was messy, but his eyes looked clear. Awake. And... tired.
He wasn’t angry.
He didn’t shout.
He didn’t accuse her.
He just stood there, looking at Rae like someone who had just woken from a bad dream.
“You...... why are you here?” Rae finally spoke. Her voice was trembling.
Kenny stepped forward. Calmly. No rush. No threat.
“I heard footsteps,” he said softly. “But... to be honest, I knew the moment you opened your door.”
Rae looked down. Half her body was still outside the gap. She slowly pulled her leg back in and sat against the wall, still holding the flashlight.
“I... I just needed a little fresh air,” she said.
Kenny didn’t answer right away. He sat beside her.... quietly.
Then, without warning, he pulled her into an embrace.
Finally... Kenny hugged Rae...
From behind. Silent. Not tight, but not weak either.
Rae didn’t move.
The hug wasn’t just warm. It was heavy.
Like someone who had been carrying too much for too long… and was finally letting go.
“I... I was scared you wouldn’t come back, Rae...” Kenny whispered.
That voice wasn’t the voice of a boss.
It wasn’t the voice of a stubborn man used to giving orders.
It was the voice of someone who had been holding fear too long.
“You’re scared of being left?” Rae asked.
Softly. Not with sarcasm.
She just wanted to understand.
“I... I’m just scared of losing the only reason I still get up in the morning,” Kenny answered, barely audible.
Rae didn’t reply.
But she didn’t push him away either....
She didn’t fight the hug. She just stayed still, breathing slowly, her eyes open, staring at the dull wall of the storage room.
In that silence, she felt something shift.
Not in the room, but inside herself.
Kenny’s hug wasn’t a trap.
But it wasn’t rescue either....
It was just... a silent request to stay.
They sat like that for a while. Until the cold started slipping in through the wooden cracks.
Finally, Kenny spoke.
“I used to think... if I had everything in this world, I’d never be afraid of losing anything.”
“And now?” Rae asked.
Kenny gave a small, bitter smile. “Turns out... that’s not what I was really looking for.”
Rae turned to him. Her gaze wasn’t full of pity, but it wasn’t cold either.
“So... you want me to stay because I’m the only one you can’t buy?”
Kenny didn’t answer right away.
He stared at the floorboards in front of him for a long time.
Then, in a quiet voice, he said,
“...Because you were the only one who didn’t run.
Until tonight.”
Rae felt something press on her chest.
Not sadness....
But a kind of truth that was too raw to ignore.
Kenny stood up.
He let go of the hug slowly. Not rushed, but with purpose.
He walked toward the storage door.
Then he stopped.
Took his phone from his pocket.
Typed something...... Sent the message.
Rae watched him, confused.
“You... you told your men about this?”
Kenny didn’t answer at first.
He stared at the screen, then turned to her slowly.
“No,” he said calmly. “I told them to remove all the spare keys to this house.
Even the one for the back door.”
Rae fell quiet.....
She didn’t know if she should feel relieved or more afraid.
Kenny didn’t want to lock her in, But he also didn’t want her to leave in secret.
He wanted Rae to stay... Because she chose to.
Kenny walked toward the stairs. Then stopped on the first step.
Without looking back, he said,
“Sometimes... trying to lock in someone who wants to leave only breaks them more.”
Rae stared at his back as he walked away.
There was something building in her chest,
Not love, not hate....
But a kind of emptiness that showed up only when the doors finally started to open.
Rae’s inner thoughts:
'The keys to this house... they’re no longer in their hands.
But why does it feel like I’m more lost than ever??'
Still inside the storage room, Rae sat in front of a dusty mirror.
Her face looked the same.
But her eyes... were different....
She stared at her own reflection.
But what looked back wasn’t just a girl lost in someone else’s house.
Now she was someone who knew,
She was standing at a crossroads.
And no one else could choose the path for her.....
In silence, she whispered,
“I don’t know... if I should stay or leave.
But tonight... I know one thing.”
She touched her chest, over the thin hoodie.
Right where that strange feeling still lingered.
“He’s not a monster.
He’s just... someone who’s too scared to be alone....”
And Rae?
She didn’t know if she could save anyone else
When she still didn’t understand what freedom really meant.
But for now... She chose not to run.
Not yet.
To be continued...
