Chapter 55: Lucian's Proposal
Silence was suffocating from the club because Sam's unrequited question—"Did you kill him?" (Chapter 54)—Jake's cigarette smoke curling through the air, his golden eyes clouded, offering nothing but the gentle hum of the bond between them. Sam's claws were deep in the creased letter, his father's warning—"born to be claimed" (Chapter 54)—a collar around his chest, the crest's claw-like mark a burn he could not rid himself of.
Seattle's smoldering wreckage loomed beyond the shattered windows, Reapers' shadow (Chapter 53) casting across the power vacuum (Chapter 51), and Jake's silence left Sam adrift, the bond a flame he hated needing. He couldn't stay—couldn't handle Jake's silence, the lie his father's words betrayed, the curse bleeding through his family (Chapter 54). The note smoldered in his pocket as he stormed out, the door of the club slamming shut behind him, the connection strained but intact—Jake's presence a drawing thread he ignored. The streets were a graveyard—ash-covered, littered with the wreckage of war (Chapter 46)—and Sam went swiftly, hood raised, claws unsheathed, for the one clue he had: Lucian Crowne.
The Reapers' leader saw his father, saw Jake's betrayal (Chapter 53)—if anyone could dissect this, it was him. The waterfront was a haze of salt and smoke, warehouses to ash, black waters of the Sound washing over the docks. Sam tracked Lucian's scent—sour, metallic, with something else, older—through the ash, the link pulsing faintly—Jake, distant, unchanging. A shadow stepped forward, and Sam stood still, claws out, as Lucian came into view, golden eyes glinting in the dark, the Reapers fanning out behind him—silent, trained, a black leather and steel shield (Chapter 53).
His smile was thin and knowing as he raised a hand, halting his crew, his eyes locking onto Sam's.
“Figured you’d come,” Lucian said, voice smooth, deep, cutting through the wind. “After that little chat in the club, I’d be looking for answers too.” He stepped closer, golden eyes—too like Jake’s—piercing, a predator sizing him up. “Find anything interesting in Russo’s secrets?”
Sam's snarl rumbled low, the letter trembling in his clenched fist as he thrust it out, crest glinting in the poor light. "This," he snapped, voice abrasive. "My father—Daniel—sent this. Says I'm cursed, born to this bond, and Jake—" He faltered, the question strangling him again. "—betrayed him. You said you knew him—what's the truth, Lucian? What did Jake do? Lucian's smile faded, his golden eyes easing—not with sympathy, but comprehension—as he took the letter, reading it, fingers running over the crest. "Daniel," he breathed, voice low, almost whispered. "He was right—about the curse, the bloodline. Clara's blood started it, a pact older than any of us, tainted by power we couldn't control." He handed it back, gazing at Sam, firm, unyielding. "Your father sought to cut it off—chop the line before it consumed you.
Jake swore he would too—until he didn't."
Sam's chest tightened, the connection pulsing—Jake's quiet, a weight he carried even here. "Did he murder him?" he snarled, claws uncurling, Lucian's words in the club—"whose blood cemented that bond" (Chapter 53)—ringing through his mind. "Tell me."
Lucian cocked his head to one side, golden eyes tilting, a flash of something—remorse, perhaps—on his face. "I wasn't there when Daniel died," he said, voice controlled. "But I do know Jake kidnapped you—tied you up—when he could have stopped it. That's betrayal enough, don't you think?" He moved in, voice dropping, intimate, menacing. "You're not free, Sam—not as long as that tie is in place. But I can help you cut it loose.".
Sam's breath caught, the bond searing—Jake, a burning flame, a chain his father had cautioned him about (Chapter 54). Ethan's ritual surfaced again—silver dagger, blood, Jake's death (Chapter 50)—but Sam had abandoned it then, chosen the bond. Now, standing before Lucian's golden eyes, freedom dangled again, a rope he could not shake. "How?" he demanded, trembling voice, the letter's burden—"not meant to be free"—weighing him down. Lucian's smile returned, hard and calculated, as he leaned forward, voice a whisper on the breeze. "It's not simple—not pure like you'd hope. The curse is blood-deep, tied to the pact, to Jake's life. I've examined it—dissected it. There's a method, an older rite than Ethan's illusions, but it requires something you never expected." He paused, golden eyes glinting, the Reapers shifting behind him, a silent menace.
If you want your freedom, Sam… you'll have to kill Jake. The world came to a halt, the wind's wail dying, the bond burning—Jake, alive, waiting—a flame Sam could feel in his bones, a leash he'd selected (Chapter 50), hated (Chapter 25), needed (Chapter 48). Kill Jake—the alpha who had bound him, saved him (Chapter 39), taken him (Chapter 49), maybe murdered his father (Chapter 54).
Lucian's words caught on, a knife slicing deeper than Nick's claws (Chapter 47), freedom not a gift but a cost, a blood cost Sam had not been willing to pay.
Sam's stomach churned, gasping convulsively. His claws clenched into fists as visions flashed—Jake's hand around his throat in the factory (Chapter 39), his rarely heard, soft laughter in the shack (Chapter 31), the searing heat of their last battle, hot and brutal, before the war took them both (Chapter 46). Jake had done this. Jake had branded him, signed his destiny in fire and blood. But had Jake ever given Sam a choice?
Lucian stood back, unruffled, watching. He could see the uncertainty on Sam's face, the turmoil within him. "You don't have to do it now," he told him smoothly, stepping back. "But if you want to be free, you know where to look.".
Sam didn't move, couldn't move. The letter in his pocket burned against his chest, the bond a steady pounding against his side. If he left now, if he walked away from it… would it be his one chance? The bond wasn't magic—it was Jake. And no matter anything, no matter the betrayal, the bloodshed, the war… it wasn't weak.
Lucian wheeled, vanishing into darkness, his Reapers merging with the night. Sam stood immobile on the pier, inky waves of the Sound crashing below. He could go back—fight Jake, wrestle the truth from him—or he could seize freedom, no matter the cost.
The city raged around him. And Sam had to know if he'd burn with it.
