Chapter 53: The Reapers' Arrival

The penthouse was a silence cage since Sam's return, the note—"He's lied to you since the beginning" (Chapter 52)—burning a hole in his pocket with the crest sketch from Jake's safehouse stash (Chapter 52). Seattle churned outside the windows, the city's ruins a testament to the war's cost (Chapter 46), the void of the underworld humming with unseen perils. Sam paced, restless, the bond humming quietly—Jake's presence always but distant, whiskey glass in hand, golden eyes on the horizon as if the answers Sam insisted (Chapter 52) could wait. But the crest, the note, Tommy's carved chest (Chapter 51)—they bothered him, a puzzle he couldn't leave behind.

A knocking on the door ended the tension abruptly, Paul's voice muffled through the wood. "Boss—trouble. Club's got visitors." Jake's jaw tightened, the bond throbbing—a momentary flash of annoyance—and he set the glass aside, claws shining for a brief moment as he stood up. "Stay here," he growled, shoving past Sam, but Sam followed him, the warning in the note an itch in his side, the crest's claw-like shape a shadow he could not shake off.

The club—Russo's last stronghold, a neon-wrapped shell on the outskirts of downtown—was a pale imitation of its former self, tables overturned from the fight (Chapter 46), bar stools splintered, the air thick with stale booze and ash. Jake entered, Sam behind him, the bond coordinating their stride as if in spite of the rift (Chapter 52). Some of the Viper survivors—Paul, a couple of others—stood stiff, claws out, in the presence of this new entity that moved into the room with a deadly, silent weight.

The Reapers had arrived.

They were different from anything else—deadly, disciplined, a clear contrast to the Cobras' feral chaos (Chapter 40) or the Vipers' shattered ruin (Chapter 51). Six figures fanned out, black leather and metal, movements economical, eyes glinting with cold intensity Sam hadn't seen since the war's peak. Knives clicked at their waists, guns tucked into civilian holsters but within easy reach, a discipline that spoke of training, not desperation. Among them was a man—tall, thin, his presence a knife cutting through fog. Lucian Crowne advanced, his boots clicking on the shattered floor, the light picking up in his golden eyes, unrelenting and razor-sharp, like Jake's.

Sam's breathing faltered, the bond thrumming—Jake's sudden stillness a jolt through him—as Lucian strode the club as if it belonged to him, a minute smile playing about his lips. Dark hair shot through with silver, his weathered face, his hard features, a prime predator. He wore no apparent weaponry, but power clung to him, a silent threat that dwarfed Nick's black-eyed fury (Chapter 47). The Reapers marched beside him, motionless, vigilant, their authority a fortress Jake's exhausted crew could not breach.

"Jacob Russo," Lucian said, smooth voice deep, rolling the words as a taunt as he stopped a few feet away from Jake. "Heard you lost your grip—city's yours for the taking now. Thought I'd take a look." His golden eyes flicked to Sam, lingered, weighed heavy on Sam, the bond humming—Jake's tension seeping through, a growl building in his chest.

Jake stepped forward, claws glinting, low, threatening voice. "You're in my house, Crowne. Say your say and get out." The bond flared—anger, defiance—but Lucian didn't flinch, his smile widening, golden eyes glinting with something older, uglier than Jake's rage.

“House?” Lucian chuckled, glancing at the wreckage—broken bottles, blood-stained floors. “Looks more like a tomb. Vipers are dust, Cobras fractured—Seattle’s a prize, and you’re not holding it.” He tilted his head, eyes locking onto Sam again, piercing, deliberate. “But you—you’re the real surprise. Sam, isn’t it?”

Sam's claws spasmed, the bond pounding—Jake's warning, a fire he ignored—his voice cutting through. "Who in the devil's name are you?" He stepped to Jake's side, the crest heavy in his pocket, the words of the note—"He's lied to you"—echoing as Lucian's eyes met his, golden and unnerving.

Lucian's smile dropped, his face one Sam couldn't read—regret, maybe, or recognition. "Lucian Crowne," he said, voice softening, but the edge remained. "I knew your father. And I know what Jake did to him."

The world shifted.

Sam's breath jammed, his chest closing, the bond flashing—Jake's shock, a jolt that echoed his own—but his eyes stayed on Lucian, golden gaze unflinching, words stabbing like blades into his gut. His father—shines through the vision of the pact (Chapter 37): hard jaw, brown eyes, blood on his palms, a man Sam had never known, dead before he had a memory of him. Jake's role in that vision—binding, choosing—had been clear, but this? What Jake did to him? The note burned, the crest throbbed, and Sam's voice grated, raw, trembling. "What are you saying?

Lucian stepped forward, his gold eyes fixed on Sam's, hard and piercing. "Your father—Daniel—he was no innocent bystander in this transaction. He trusted Jake, fought alongside him. And Jake—" He glared at Jake with contempt, for an instant. "—betrayed him. Ask him how it concluded, Sam. Ask him whose blood sealed that contract.".

Jake bellowed, jumping, claws glinting, but Lucian moved aside, smooth, unruffled, the Reapers drawing blades in concert, a wall of steel halting Jake in his charge. "Not here," Lucian said, his voice cold, golden eyes flashing back to Sam. "Not yet. But think on this, Sam—why is he so quiet now?" He turned, the Reapers at his back, leaving as they had come, leaving the club to silence, the air thick with their threat.

Sam's world was spinning, his breathing thin, the bond pounding—Jake's anger, his silence, a weight he couldn't shake. He stretched out to Jake, golden eyes avoiding him, claws retracting, the man who'd claimed him (Chapter 48), who'd bound him (Chapter 37), now a specter of secrets. Did Jake kill his father?

Sam's fists clenched, claws aching to tear away the deception that had kept him going. "Speak," he growled, voice intense, but Jake said nothing, expression unchanging, a shield between them.

Paul and the rest shifted uncomfortably, watching, but all Sam noticed was Jake—the alpha who had bound him in blood, taken his soul on the battlefield, now a stranger amidst the ruin of his realm. He longed for truth, but the bond pulsed, burning and unsevered, showing him what he did not wish to hear.

Jake was not denying it.

And that silence broke everything.
