62. On Work
"We did our best to chase and shoot them. But we lost the trail in the crowded lanes."
Jonathan chuckled. "Lost the trail in a crowd?" His jaw tightened even more. "Las Vegas is always crowded. Is that a reasonable excuse?"
They looked down even more without daring to speak. There was only the sound of their hearts racing.
"Did I tell you to go home without that jerk?"
Still, no one dared to answer. Jonathan also felt increasingly constrained in anger. He turned around and felt the nape of his neck stiffen. Jayden had never seen his master this angry either. Usually, a trivial matter like this was directly blamed on Jayden. But this time was different.
"According to Christian's report, there's a festival in the area. So, they can't go in there," Jayden gave an additional explanation for the situation.
After all, Jonathan's men could not have deliberately returned empty-handed. The big festival narrowed down their movements. If forced, it would cause chaos. Jayden explained with the hope that Jonathan would understand.
Unfortunately, he didn't.
The man cursed with his gaze. "Did I ask you a question?"
"I just..." Jayden immediately closed his lips tightly. Then, he bowed politely. "I'm sorry."
At like this, Jayden just wanted to calm Jonathan and the rest of the chaos. Unfortunately, it was the wrong way. Even Jayden didn't want to make a scene. He didn't want to cause trouble.
"Do you know what I'm angry about?" asked Jonathan as he calmly pulled out a gun. The sight left the remaining men dumbfounded. They widened their eyes in fear.
"Answer if you want to live!"
His subordinates were even more frightened, their bodies trembling. Sweat poured down their foreheads and faces.
"Tell me!" Jonathan shouted.
"B-Because we failed!" one of them tried his luck with a trembling tone and spilling tears. Anything to keep Jonathan alive.
Jonathan grinned. He walked slowly, back and forth in front of his men.
Their bodies shook even more when they heard Jonathan pull the trigger.
Bang!
One of them collapsed as Jonathan shot him mercilessly, blood flowing slowly from his head. The sight made the other men lose their strength. They were suddenly weak.
"What makes me angry is that you still dare to come back without that bastard!" Jonathan said with emphasis on every intonation. Even his sharp eyes stared at the remaining four men, who were stricken with fear in submission.
Jonathan looked down at his gun. "How many times have I told you? Don't ever come to me in failure!" He screeched at the end of the sentence, jolting the entire room. He was so creepy.
"Forgive us, sir! We won't do it again!" said one of them with fear. He couldn't even cry because he was so tense.
"Don't ever come back if you haven't succeeded," Jonathan added with a cold intonation. "I hate failure. I hate those of you who come back with failure!"
"If you come back a failure, it means you underestimated my task," Jonathan continued to warn. "Do you understand?!"
No one was able to answer. Their voices seemed to be swallowed by fear.
"No one answers?" repeated Jonathan.
"Yes, sir!"
Jonathan gave her a probing look through his pitch-black orbs that burned as if they held a raging fire. That gaze immediately made the men shrink. Their nerves were eroded.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The sound of another shot made by Jonathan unexpectedly shocked the whole room. Even Jayden who was there also did heart exercises, as well as the remaining four men.
They all didn't expect Jonathan to play with his gun again. This time he shot three prisoners inside the bars. They died instantly. It was a sign that Jonathan was a good shooter, and it reinforced the fear of his men.
"I've prepared a place for you if you don't succeed in bringing the bastard who tried to kill my wife!" Jonathan snarled. "Don't think the prison is so full that you wouldn't think of being one of the inmates."
"Look!" Jonathan pointed at the iron bars with his pistol. "I've vacated the premises. I always mean what I say."
Jonathan cursed, throwing his pistol at the wall until it bounced away before he climbed the stairs, leaving the suffocating underground room.
Even at the hospital, Via came alone. She walked down the corridor to see Cathy. Her forehead furrowed as her steps slowed when she found a familiar figure guarding the door.
"You again," Elion said.
Via felt uncomfortable with the man, so she didn't want to respond. She quickly approached the door. But her hand was stopped by Elion before she could open the door. They got into a pretty cold stare-off.
Elion understood what he meant. "I'm just following orders."
Via chuckled.
Elion didn't respond either. What Via saw was that Elion was very calm and unencumbered by anything. The man's hand was also still clasped in hers. Even Via realized that and then threw him roughly.
"You're so stiff." Via advanced closer while looking up, looking at Elion who was much taller than him. "I'm Cathy's best friend. I'm also her husband's sister, your boss's sister!" She emphasized. "Do you still have to hold me back?"
"I'm just following orders," Elion said again.
Even Via laughed. "Wow! You speak like a robot. Where are the settings? Huh?!" He tried to turn Elion's body around as if he were looking for a button on his body.
"I'm serious," Elion added.
"You're always so serious that you never enjoy your life," Via snapped irritably. "Argh!" She flicked her hair back. "Jonathan is so petty."
Via was annoyed with Jonathan who was either too rigid or perhaps too in love with Cathy that his wife was not even allowed to be visited by her own family. But on the other hand, Via could draw another conclusion if Jonathan meant to love his wife. He could take good care of her.
"What did you bring?" Elion confirmed as Via turned around to go home.
"Ah, this. Just some crispy chicken."
"Shouldn't you eat it instead of throwing it away?"
"What?"
"You can't possibly eat that much, right?"
Via observed the paper bag containing two boxes of crispy chicken in her hand. "But you're at work."
"There are many on work."
