Chapter 17: Are you planning to die

Chapter 17: Are you planning to die
Three steady knocks sounded on the wooden door, disrupting our toe-curling ordeal and I pulled away from his grip but he dragged me back and shook his head.
“Just ignore, they'll go away.”

I was going to ignore but another three knocks landed on the door again, this time louder than the last and more urgent.

“Let's just see who it is and find out what they have to say, it shouldn't take that long,” I whispered and he finally obliged.

“Stay here, I'll go.”
He calmly led me to the edge of the bed, guiding me to sit down and he walked towards the door and twisted the doorknob open.

“Elias,” Zane called out. “I was in the middle of something important before you interrupted, so whatever you have to say, say it fast.”

“Zane, there's been a new development, with our plan, we don't have till tomorrow, we have to proceed with the mission today,”

“I don't understand, what's going on?” Zane questioned as he stepped over the threshold, outside the room and shut the door. I guess he didn't want me to hear what they were talking about.
After he closed the door, I tiptoed towards it and placed my ears on the door to eavesdrop on his conversation with Elias.
Thankfully, the door wasn't soundproof so I could hear everything they were saying clearly.

“Luke sent the message to Damian today that he wanted to meet up with him tomorrow like we planned. But Damian seems really eager to see him, he asked to meet up with him today, as soon as possible,” Elias stated.

“Why? Why is he eager to see him?”

“I have no idea, but I think it has to do with the fact that he's obsessed with taking you down.”

“So he's jumping at the opportunity that has presented itself in front of him before it eludes his grasp.”

“Exactly!” Elias exclaimed. “There's one more thing, he's sending his men to get Luke himself.”

“That isn't a problem right?” Zane asked

“No, I just wanted to let you know.”

“Good. Our fake attack on Damian's house will happen approximately two hours after Luke gets there. And we won't be able to communicate with him till tomorrow when he meets up with us at the mall, the only thing we have on him is the tracker we implanted on his neck so we can know his location at all times.”

“And that's how we're going to locate Damian's house.”

“Yes, make arrangements for Luke to leave as soon as possible and start prepping the men for our mission, they should be ready and be on standby in the next 1 hour, I'll join you guys in a few,”

“Alright, Noted.” Elias asserted.

Their conversation was over and I knew Zane would be coming back into the room any moment so I ran back to the bed and sat down.
He came back into the room immediately I sat down, just like I had predicted.
He came to where I was sitting and crouched in front of me, bringing us eye to eye.

“That was Elias right?” I asked him, even though I already knew the answer.

He nodded his head. “We had to hasten up the mission, it's taking place today.”

“Is that a bad thing?”

“No, not at all, Everything is in order, Luke should be en route to Damian's house any moment from now.”

“Will you be able to come back home today after everything?”

“Of course baby, I'm coming home,”

“Alright,” I smiled at him and he reciprocated.
He tilted his head slightly, his fingers tracing the edges of my face as if memorizing every inch. His touch was warm, and grounding, with his eyes locked onto mine. They held a softness and a quiet, unwavering devotion that wrapped around me like the coziest embrace.

Then he spoke, and his voice, low and tender, wove through the air like a melody meant only for me, tugging at something deep inside my chest.
“you’re the best thing that ever happened to my life Amelia, Thank you for lighting up my dark world.”

Hearing him express himself was so reassuring, but his smile slowly faded and I couldn't understand why. At that moment I wanted to just hold him tight and tell him everything was okay, but he beat me to it.

“I know right now so many things are threatening to break us apart but I know we'll make it through together. Nothing is ever going to come between us, Amelia. I love you more than anything in this world and I want you to always know that,” he said in a calm voice.

“I love you too Zane,” I whispered. “But you're scaring me, why are you being so touchy-feely when you're about to go on a mission,” I narrowed my eyes at him. “Or are you planning to die?”

He chuckled and shook his head, “Baby I'm just telling you how I feel, nobody's dying.”

“Yeah you better not,” I replied. He was still staring and smiling at me and I just sat there admiring his handsome face and all of a sudden, it crossed my mind. I needed to tell him about it.

“Zane, there's something I need to tell you.”

“I'm all ears.”

“You know I was in Isla's room with Shawna right?”

“Yes, I was actually going to ask you what exactly were you doing in h……”

“Why we were in her room is not important,” I cut him off.
“But we found something there, pregnancy test strips.” He stood up the moment he heard what I said, maintaining a serious expression, but I kept on talking.

“Several of them were littered in her bin and I think they were used recently. Not just that, they all came out negative.”

“But she's already pregnant,” he whispered, facing down, almost like he was talking to himself.

“So she says,” I rolled my eyes. “You know pregnant women are known for using test strips and the tests usually come out negative when they've been pregnant for weeks,” I said, my voice heavy with sarcasm.

“Amelia, I had Steven, our family doctor carry out a blood test multiple times and it came out positive. I know for a fact that she's pregnant, but I don't understand why she had those used test strips in her room.”

“Ask him to do it again, the test. Ask Steven to do another pregnancy test, and this time he's going to do it secretly, without her finding out.”

Zane took a deep breath in and exhaled, with his hands on his waist.

“Okay, he'll carry out another test without her knowledge.”
