Chapter 98 We saw Amber

Chapter 98 We saw Amber
“That looks good on you, anak.”

Daphne smiled as she turned to BK’s mother. She was standing in front of a boutique mirror in that mall. She had also picked something to wear, following the older woman’s suggestion. She said she’d pay for it too, since she was the one who invited her out.

BK’s mother had just returned from Caramoan yesterday. She picked her up from university after her class today. Daphne had given her the schedule the night before, so she knew exactly what time to fetch her.

“Thank you, Ma.”

She looked at herself again in the mirror. Even without trying it on, she knew it fit perfectly. She wasn’t planning to buy anything because she still had plenty of dresses, even from gifts, but the older woman kept insisting on getting her one. She didn’t want to upset her.

Her face crumpled slightly when she caught a glimpse of someone else trying on dresses in the mirror’s reflection. Her eyes dropped to the woman’s noticeably pregnant belly. It really was Amber, the same person she saw outside the bookstore standing there. Her face hadn’t changed. Just her body, a little rounder.

She glanced at BK’s mom. Hopefully, she wouldn’t notice Amber, because if she did… it’d be awkward. She was still focused on picking out a dress behind her.

Daphne wanted to leave right then, but she couldn’t. She had nowhere else to go. Seeing Amber would only make her feel worse. Not because she was her husband’s ex, but because it was awkward. If only she hadn’t lost their baby, maybe she’d be nine months pregnant by now too. Amber had only gotten ahead by a few weeks, even if she was already due. It was just heartbreaking, knowing her baby had been taken from her too soon. That’s why she didn’t want to talk to Amber. She had nothing to show, no child to call hers, and nothing to bind her to BK except for a wedding ring.

She looked again at BK’s mom, worried she might suddenly express her wish for a grandchild. What would happen to her studies then? Only she and BK had discussed this. His parents didn’t know. She knew the woman was heartbroken too when they lost the baby.

“Amber?”

She shut her eyes for a moment when she heard the older woman’s voice. She’d seen Amber, after all. Of course, she’d recognize her. She’d known her for years.

“It’s really you, Amber! How have you been? How far along are you now?”

Daphne had no choice but to turn so Amber would know she was there. Maybe she’d leave sooner if she saw her.

“T-Tita Ken. I didn’t expect to see you.” She glanced at Daphne and gave a polite smile, which Daphne didn’t return. “I-I’m doing okay. I’m due any day now.”

“Really? Are you with someone? Your husband?”

“I’m alone today, Tita. The father of my baby is still at work.” She glanced at Daphne again and smiled.

“Why did he let you go to the mall alone? Who’s going to carry your bags? Goodness, you might tire yourself out and affect the baby.”

“He actually hired a butler for me, Tita, so I’m okay. He’s just really busy lately.” She pointed at a man standing not too far away.

“That’s good to hear, hija.”

“I’ll just check out the other racks, Ma. Please take your time.”

The older woman turned to her and squeezed her hand.

“By the way, this is Daphne—BK’s wife. I’m sure you’ve met her already at the office, right?”

Amber visibly swallowed at the remark. Maybe she didn’t expect BK’s mom to know she used to work there.

“Y-yes, Tita. Hi, Daphne,” she said, reluctantly.

Daphne knew it was forced. Because of what BK’s mom said.

“Hello,” she answered with a strained smile.

She wanted to ask how she was doing but didn’t. Amber clearly looked fine and content with her current situation.

“Well then, Tita, I’ll head over to the infant section. I need to hurry. It might get dark soon, and the baby’s dad doesn’t want us caught in the rain.”

“What a thoughtful husband you have, hija. Take care.” BK’s mom looked at her belly as Amber rubbed it.

“Thank you, Tita.” She smiled warmly at her and then looked at Daphne. “Bye, Daphne. It’s nice to see you here.”

She responded only with a small smile. No need to pretend. She knew Amber still had feelings for BK. Her eyes gave her away earlier.

“You know, anak, I want to see you wear a dress like that too.” She was referring to the maternity dress Amber was wearing.

She didn’t say it outright, but Daphne understood what she meant. She wanted her to get pregnant again. That was something she couldn’t promise.

All she could do was agree with her silently. BK’s mom really did want her to get pregnant.

After shopping, they had a meal together. They went home right after since it was a Friday, and BK’s mom didn’t want to get stuck in traffic.

As usual, Daphne got home first. BK always came home late now. Even when she went to the office, she never got to leave with him because of his other job. She had to admit. They barely had time for each other anymore.

Since they were going to a party the next day, she decided to finish her assignments and prepare her slides for an upcoming report. She knew the party would go late, so she’d have no time for work tomorrow.

Just as she closed her laptop, BK walked into their room. She hadn’t heard his car, so she was caught off guard.

She immediately kissed him back when he leaned down to kiss her.

“Why aren’t you asleep yet, baby? Another round of assignments?”

“Yeah,” she answered with a smile.

“My wife is such a diligent student.” He pinched her nose playfully.

“Of course. Everything I’m doing is for our future. I don’t want to rely on my family’s wealth. That’s why I’m working hard.”

“That’s great. So, how was shopping with Mama?”

She paused briefly but answered seriously.

“It was okay. Fun. Not until…”

BK frowned at her pause.

“Not until what, baby?”

“We saw Amber.”
