Chapter 108 What was he doing here again?
DAPHNE GASPED when BK suddenly knelt before her. He immediately held her feet and inspected them.
He looked up at her. “What happened, baby?”
She swallowed hard at his question. What happened? Why didn’t he ask himself what happened to her?
She clenched her teeth. Swallowed again before finally meeting his gaze.
“Who are you?” she asked seriously.
“B-baby…” her husband said in disbelief.
She had temporary amnesia after the accident, but her memory came back quickly. She almost wished it hadn't so she could truly forget him. She was already full of pain.
“I don’t know you, so let go of my feet. My husband might see you. I don’t want this to cause a fight between us.”
Forgive her, Emmanuel. She still wasn’t ready to face BK now. It felt like history was repeating itself. She was pregnant too the last time he came for her after she left him. And now, here he was again, and she was pregnant with their child once more.
“Damn it! I’m your husband, baby. There’s no one else. We’re married…”
She shut her eyes when he suddenly collapsed against her knees.
“I’m so sorry for all the stupid things I’ve done. Forgive me, my love. Please don’t forget me just like that…” he said as he looked up at her again.
She shook her head. She showed no emotion. She didn’t let him see how affected she was.
“Mister, please. Let go of my feet if you don’t want me to scream. What would people who know me think if they saw us?”
He glanced briefly at her swollen belly. She knew he had figured out she was pregnant.
“No! I’m the only one you’re married to! Now that I’ve found you, I won’t ever let you go again, Daphne.” He embraced her, but she resisted.
“Stop it! Let me go!” She pushed his head away, trying to break free, but he didn’t budge, until Emmanuel arrived and pulled BK away from her.
“E-Emmanuel… Please get rid of him. I don’t know him,” she said, confused, while he stared at her.
“What the hell are you doing here, Mr. Hernandez?” Emmanuel asked her husband, letting go of him, nearly knocking him off balance. Good thing BK caught the railing.
“Baby, please. It’s me, your husband!” He turned to Emmanuel. “Please tell Daphne I’m her husband.”
She couldn’t look at her husband as he said those words.
“Please, Emmanuel, tell my wife.”
“You must be mistaken. I’m not your wife. Maybe I just look like her.” She pointed to Emmanuel. “He’s my husband. He’s the one who’s been caring for me while I’m stuck in this damn wheelchair! He’s the one who fed me when I couldn’t move. He’s the one who helps me walk when I need it. So what are you saying, that you’re my husband?!” She couldn’t stop herself from raising her voice.
“Please leave, Mr. Hernandez. Just go. You heard her. She doesn’t know you. If you really care, give her space. That’s the best thing you can do now. Listen, even just this once. The pain you caused her isn’t something to take lightly,” Emmanuel said softly.
She looked at her husband, whose shoulders slumped. Their eyes met briefly before he turned away. She felt a flicker of pity, but he deserved this. What he did hurt far worse.
“Are you okay?” Emmanuel asked as he approached her.
She nodded.
“Sorry you had to witness that. Is your meeting over?”
“Yes. Just finished. Do you want to go home now?”
“Y-yeah, if you don’t have anything else planned.” She forced a smile and wheeled herself toward her room.
They didn’t speak during the drive home. But she broke the silence first.
“How did BK find this place?”
He turned to her. “I don’t know, Daphne. Maybe they followed me. They know I was the last person with you.”
“Maybe. But Max made it seem like I left the country. So how did BK track me here?”
“I told you before, nothing’s impossible with them. The airport’s owned by the Moores, who are close to your husband’s father. And don’t forget the Madrids’ powerful security firm. You know this. They’ve got connections even in government.”
“True,” she sighed.
She stared out the window. What would she do now that she’d seen her husband again? What if he found out she was pretending not to know him?
What were his plans now? Win her back? Just to break her again? She wouldn’t let it happen. The child in her womb was enough reason. She wouldn’t play the martyr again. He had a child with someone else. His attention would be split, and it could only bring her more stress. She would never risk losing this child again. She’d rather lose BK than lose her baby. One day, she’d forget him. She was just waiting for the annulment papers her lawyer was preparing.
She went straight to her room when they got back. She needed rest after everything that happened. For months, her life had been quiet, and now, chaos returned just because she saw her husband again.
Three days passed, but the memory of what happened at the inn’s veranda still haunted her.
She guided herself out of the house using her walking aid. She could manage when Emmanuel wasn’t around. He’d gone into town to buy engine oil for the generator.
She sat beneath the mango tree. There was a bench there, custom-built by the young professor just for her to lounge on. It was calming in that spot. Breezy. Sometimes, she’d even fall asleep there in the afternoon.
She hadn’t even fully settled in when she saw a motorcycle pull up in front of the house. The rider wore a helmet, so she couldn’t make out who it was. But the build of the body was all too familiar. Her heartbeat suddenly quickened.
She was right. It was BK riding the motorcycle. She couldn’t avoid him anymore once the caretaker pointed her out. She quickly looked away before BK could meet her eyes.
What was he doing here again?
