Chapter 100 Photos
Chapter 100 Photos
DAPHNE FLINCHED when she heard the loud honk outside. The guard wasn’t around. He’d told her he was stepping out to send money to a relative just outside their subdivision. The gate was locked per her instructions since he was away. So BK wouldn’t be able to open it from the outside if it was indeed him. That was one of the gate’s features. It could only be opened from the inside.
She wiped her hands with a clean kitchen towel and headed out. It was BK. He had gotten out of the car and was peering inside the guardhouse from the gate.
She gave him a dry smile when he waved.
Like it was nothing?
She turned away and walked back to the door. She pressed something on the screen to open the gate. Then, she returned to the kitchen.
She’d spent the whole day cleaning the house. She wanted to keep her mind busy. She didn’t want to overthink. She had to be sharp for tomorrow. It was the day of her report.
She noticed BK enter from the corner of her eye. She knew he was about to hug her, so she moved away and pretended not to see him.
He followed her, so she moved again to the drawer and pretended to grab something. She tried to move quickly, but he cornered her before she could reach the bowl.
“Got ya!”
She closed her eyes as he hugged her tightly from behind.
“L-let go of me, BK. I’m doing something.” She wriggled away, and he let go with a confused look.
Their eyes met briefly.
“Is something wrong, baby?”
She forced a smile.
“Me? Something wrong? Nothing. I’m just tired from cleaning all day after going to church alone.” She emphasized the word alone. “There’s food if you’re hungry. Just heat it. I need to rest. I have to leave early tomorrow.”
“Baby,” she heard him call out.
It was only six in the evening, so she knew he’d be puzzled.
She left him in the kitchen. He didn’t follow, which she was thankful for. She went straight to the bathroom and took a shower. She soaked in the tub to calm herself down.
When she stepped out, she saw BK waiting for her sweetly just outside the bathroom. For once, he didn’t knock. She hadn’t heard a thing.
“You need the bathroom? It’s free. Go ahead.” She smiled at him casually when she turned to look.
She went into the walk-in closet to get something to sleep in. Apparently, he followed her, and he leaned against the closet door, watching her.
How long would her husband keep lying to her? She shook her head to clear her mind.
“Do you want me to grab your sleepwear too?” she asked with a smile.
She couldn’t ask him anything yet. She had class the next day. She needed to wake up early.
He nodded slightly and smiled.
She handed it to him when she stood in front of him. Then she stepped out first and changed. The closet suddenly felt too tight, so she dressed outside. She let him watch her. His lips parted like he wanted to speak, but he held back.
She quickly dried her hair with a blow dryer. He was still watching, sitting on the edge of the bed, holding the clothes she gave him.
She walked over and gave him a quick kiss with a smile. She didn’t give him a chance to respond.
“Good night, BK.”
She climbed into bed and lay down.
BK must’ve sensed she wasn’t in the mood because he didn’t speak. He could probably tell her smiles were different, that’s why he couldn’t smile back.
She was genuinely tired, so sleep came fast. She’d only had a few hours the night before. She wore herself out cleaning their big house. Good thing their house help wasn’t around yet.
She woke up the next day with her husband’s leg draped over her and his arm wrapped tightly around her waist. She gently moved away and got up.
It was just past four in the morning, but she had already taken a shower. She planned to leave by six so she could review her report in their room. She quickly made breakfast for both of them too.
BK was still asleep, which she was grateful for. She left without waking him and sent a message saying breakfast was ready and that she had left for class.
Their classroom was still closed, so she waited outside the building. She looked for a bench and sat there. She opened her laptop and reviewed her slides.
Twenty minutes before eight, she went up. A lot of her classmates had arrived. They were noisy again, probably because their teacher hadn’t shown up yet.
She hadn’t even set her bag down when her phone rang. She answered it right away. It was Amelie. She stepped out to take the call since the professor wasn’t there yet. They wouldn’t understand each other if they talked inside the room.
“Are you at school already?” Amelie asked first.
“Yeah. Just got here. Why?”
“Do you have an exam or quiz today?” she asked seriously, which made Daphne laugh.
“No. Why all the questions, Amelie?”
Amelie sighed.
“I’m serious, Daph. What I’m about to say might ruin your mood, so I’m asking first.”
Her smile faded at that.
“I have a report today in my major subject at eight. We’re just waiting for Sir.”
“Until what time? Do you have class later too?”
“Yeah, but just lectures. Come on, just say it. You’re making me anxious.” She felt nervous hearing her friend’s voice. Amelie rarely got serious. This was different.
“You sure?”
There she goes again. Now she was even more nervous.
It took her a while to answer. “Yes. Just say it.”
“I honestly don’t know how to tell you. But you need to see this. I’ll just send it to you,” Amelie said.
“O-okay,” she stammered.
Her heart thudded as she said that. The line went quiet for a moment. Amelie must’ve been sending it already. She heard her sigh.
Moments later, a notification popped up on her messaging app. It must be what Amelie was talking about. She saw her name, so she was sure that was it.
“I sent it already,” Amelie said.
She swallowed twice before tapping the notification. She had the call on the loudspeaker so she could still hear her friend.
Her fingers trembled as she opened the message. She gasped when she saw the first photo Amelie sent. BK, helping a woman out of a car. Not just any woman—Amber.
She shook her head afterwards, trying to deny it. That couldn’t be!
Her eyes dropped to the second photo. As clear as water—it was BK and Amber.
That’s when her knees started shaking. Even her muscles trembled. She clenched one hand to stop the shaking, but she couldn’t.
“W-who took the photos, Amelie?”
“I did, Daph. I was nearby for something yesterday. I couldn’t be wrong. It was them. I’ve seen them together before, but I couldn’t remember when. Maybe just recently. I thought I imagined it, but yesterday, it was clear. That woman with him, Daph… she’s pregnant.”
She shut her eyes at what she heard.
