Chapter 80 It Needed to Come From the Mistress

Daphne spent the whole morning chatting with Joshua. He seemed pretty upbeat, but after lunch, he still needed his nap.

While Joshua was snoozing, Daphne decided to head out and grab some of his favorite desserts.

Just as she stepped out of the hospital, she bumped into Claire, who was carrying a lunchbox. Claire asked, "Daphne? What are you doing here?"

Daphne nodded. "An elderly person I knew from work is hospitalized, so I came to visit."

Her eyes fell on Claire's lunchbox. "You're here to bring food to Mr. Fisher, right?"

The news of Alan's failed suicide attempt had spread all over the internet, so Claire wasn't surprised that Daphne knew about it.

Claire lowered her eyes and sighed softly, "I feel really sorry for you and Otis, making you go through all this for nothing."

"I had no idea he would poison himself this time. Luckily, he was taken to the hospital in time and had his stomach pumped. The poison available on the market isn't highly concentrated, so he survived."

Daphne had suspected as much. Alan was someone who valued his life too much to put himself in real danger. She asked, "So, what are you planning to do now?"

Claire sighed deeply again before speaking, "I had indeed made up my mind to leave him, but this time he scared me. As soon as he woke up, he knelt down and begged for my forgiveness. He said if it happened again, he would leave with nothing and turn himself into the police. So, I thought I'd give him one last chance. I hope this time he's truly remorseful. Besides, he's never asked anything of me, not even blamed me for not being able to have children. He even comforted me, saying it didn't matter."

"I understand. I just feel a bit sorry for you. Please take care of yourself," Daphne had no intention of persuading Claire otherwise.

She never thought Claire was a naive woman. Otherwise, how could she have helped Alan build such a business empire? She must have had her own ideas.

Daphne nodded. "Why not head upstairs now? Mr. Fisher might be getting hungry."

Watching Claire enter the hospital, Daphne took out her phone and made a call. "Forge a pregnancy test report for Claire and send it to Villa No. 1 at Golden Grove Estates."

Alan indeed wasn't worried about Claire's infertility, because his illegitimate child was was still his own flesh and blood.

It was only Claire who remained in the dark, yet was deeply touched.

If Claire found out that he had an illegitimate child, what would she do?

However, the truth shouldn't be revealed by Daphne; it needed to come from the mistress. Only when the mistress confronted Claire directly and caused a scene would Claire truly see the reality.

The best tool, sure enough, was the mistress with the illegitimate child.

She could keep calm and not ask Alan for anything because she had leverage over Claire's infertility. After all, Alan only had this one child, and the final inheritance would be this kid's. A smart woman could always analyze the pros and cons.

Besides, Alan knew exactly how much property Claire had, so he wouldn't let his mistress pissed Claire off.

But now things were different. If she found out that Claire, the legitimate wife, was pregnant, could she still stay calm?

Probably not, because in the end, she might end up with nothing.

In the afternoon, Daphne bought some desserts and, noticing the trash can in the ward was full, decided to take it out.

As she stepped out and walked a little way, she overheard some familiar voices around the corner.

"I don't know what Joshua sees in that Daphne! Maybe she's just a schemer trying to gain Joshua's trust to get his inheritance!"

"Joshua won't even let us take care of him! It's like Daphne is his illegitimate daughter! Is she the most filial one?"

"What are you talking about?!" A man's voice cut in, sounding annoyed, but he didn't say anything nice either, "She's just an outsider who knows how to say a few nice words. It seems like she really has some devious means; she's even married Carl. Now we can't do anything to her. However, Carl isn't someone she could easily deal with. His whole family is dead, and he doesn't even share the same last name as his biological father. He probably won't care about her for long. Besides, with her poor health, she won't last long."

Every word reached Daphne's ears.

Daphne pretended not to hear and walked over. The recycling facility was at the end of the corridor.

Almost the whole Thomas family was sitting there. Seeing Daphne, they all fell silent, not daring to speak.

Who knew if she had heard them?

Someone tried to smooth things over. "Mrs. Ward, why not just asked the nurse to take out the trash?"

Daphne replied, "The nurse went to get medicine. It's no big deal to take out the trash myself. Joshua is already asleep, so I'll be heading back now."

Daphne said and turned back to the ward.

Silence fell again.

Joshua had roughly explained the family situation to Daphne, mostly about how everyone was concerned about how much of Joshua's estate they would get. They were all scheming.

As Joshua put it, there wasn't a single good person in the whole family.

When Daphne left the hospital, it was still early, not yet time for Carl to get off work. So she took a cab to a high-end store that specialized in custom essential oils.

All the essential oil ingredients here were plant extracts, and there were also some expensive high-end fragrance ingredients.

Daphne thought, 'Carl seemed to be in a bad mood, maybe because of work. When I get home, I can light some essential oils in the bedroom to help ease his mood.'

Daphne didn't choose the sweet formulas but went for a more neutral agarwood scent, adding citrus and camphor, along with some other auxiliary scents that were calming and soothing.

Daphne sent the address of the store to Carl.

Just as Carl arrived, Daphne had just finished making the essential oils. The store even gave her some beautiful aroma stones as a gift.

"What did you buy?" Carl saw her get in the car with a shopping bag, and he could faintly smell the fragrance.

Daphne smiled and placed the bag at her feet. "I made some essential oils myself. You seemed to be in a bad mood, and I didn't know if it was something I did wrong or if it was work-related. So I made some essential oils to help you relax."
