Chapter 30: Traces and Morning Departures
Chapter 30: Traces and Morning Departures
That night, silence enveloped Damian's room. Only the slowly calming sound of breathing and heartbeats that began to subside after the storm of emotions had passed. Damian slept on his stomach on the side of the bed, his body partially covered by a shifted blanket. His face looked younger in sleep. More peaceful and calmer, almost unrecognizable from the figure known as a threat. For a moment, Vanya almost didn't recognize him.
Vanya, still awake, lay her head on the pillow, looking at the man beside her. The man she had always considered a monstrous kidnapper had just touched her with such warmth and gentleness. Unconsciously, she smiled, admiring Damian's handsomeness and masculinity. Especially when she saw this other side of Damian, which perhaps not everyone could see.
The light from the bedside lamp softly reflected on his skin, and as Vanya tilted her body, her eyes caught something on the man's back, like a scar. For a while, she just looked at it, unmoving. The wounds were rough, deep, some like old lash marks, others like scratches that hadn't healed properly. One wound, on the lower part of his shoulder, seemed older than the rest. Covered, yet still leaving a dark mark that would never truly disappear.
Vanya reached out, hesitant. Her fingertips touched one of the scars slowly, as if touching uninvited history. Damian's skin felt warm under her fingers, and her heart beat faster. Not out of fear, but because of something else. Empathy, perhaps. Or bitterness. She didn't know.
"Who hurt you like this?" she murmured, almost inaudibly.
She traced the scar gently, following its path, trying to understand the untold story behind it. In the silence, her mind questioned and analyzed. Was this monster once truly human? A human who was broken and never saved? Before all that darkness, was there a light that someone had extinguished?
Damian didn't stir. But the next second, he moved slightly, frowning as if restless. Vanya's touch stopped, but a second too late.
"I don't like being touched when I sleep," Damian's voice was hoarse, heavy, but not angry.
Vanya held her breath, still lying beside him. "I... was just looking at your scars."
Damian slowly opened his eyes, turning his head. His gaze still hovered between consciousness and dream, but he looked at Vanya with more than just an empty stare.
"Don't pity me," he said softly, almost coldly. "Those scars don't make me a victim."
"I'm not pitying you," Vanya whispered. "But I'm... curious. What can make someone change like that?"
Damian smiled wryly. "Many things. This world never runs out of ways to destroy people."
Vanya didn't answer. She just looked at Damian and found herself beginning to recognize the side he had always hidden. The side that didn't appear in threats or cold commands. The fragile side, though shrouded by the crust of power and blood.
Damian slowly turned his body to face Vanya. His hair was a little messy, his eyes still held remnants of sleepiness, but there was firmness in his gaze. He reached for Vanya's chin with one hand, holding her in an inescapable gaze.
"You can still run, Vanya. I won't stop you tonight."
Vanya shook her head slowly. "I don't want to run. At least, not tonight."
Damian looked at her for a few seconds. Then, without a word, he kissed Vanya, this time calmer, slower, like water finding a crack between rocks. There was no urgency, no command. Only a quiet need and a desire to connect, not to dominate.
Vanya returned the kiss. Her hands wrapped around Damian's neck, and their bodies reunited, but this time in a different rhythm. It wasn't about releasing something held back, but about filling something empty.
Damian's fingers slowly traced Vanya's spine, and he kissed her shoulder as if asking for forgiveness for all he had ever broken. And for the first time, Vanya didn't feel like a captive or a pawn. She felt... proud and chosen.
They merged in silence, in a gentle and emotional rhythm. Every touch was an unspoken confession, and every breath was an agreement that even if they were lost, they could still find their way home to each other.
And when the night returned to silence, their bodies lay side by side, still touching, as if reluctant to separate even as time continued to move.
Damian pulled Vanya into his embrace. He didn't say anything. But his heart whispered. If I still have any humanity left, then you are the one holding it from completely collapsing.
And Vanya, in her silence, realized one thing. She was already too close to this danger. But strangely, she no longer wanted to distance herself.
Morning came softly, enveloping the room with golden light streaming through the gaps in Damian's curtains. Vanya opened her eyes first in Damian's embrace. Damian's body was still asleep beside her, his broad chest rising and falling slowly, his black hair messy, adding a wild yet peaceful impression after a long night that drained both emotion and passion.
Slowly, Vanya sat on the edge of the bed, pulling the blanket that still covered her body. She glanced at Damian once more, making sure he was truly asleep, before hurrying to put on her clothes that were scattered on the floor. She made every movement as gentle as possible. As if she were escaping from a sweet yet confusing sin.
As soon as she finished dressing, she stood, looking at Damian once more.
There was a strange tremor in her chest. A feeling she couldn't name. Not just satisfaction, nor just surrender. But something almost resembling sympathy... or perhaps worse. Affection.
She allowed herself to look at the scars on Damian's back from a distance. The scars she had touched last night. The marks were real, not fabricated. Old wounds that seemed to hold a story too deep to be revealed in one night.
In a low voice, almost a whisper meant only for herself, Vanya said,
"Thank you for an amazing night, Damian."
Then she turned, took a deep breath, and slowly opened the door to Damian's room.
"Coming out of Mr. Volkov's room at this early hour, do you think this place is a five-star hotel, miss?"
Vanya's heart almost leaped out. She turned quickly and found the large man standing in the corridor, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed over his chest. His hair was gray, his jaw firm with many scars on his face, and his eyes... sharp like an eagle's. This man was the one who had entered Damian's room earlier. Elijah.
