Chapter 51 The Run

Chapter 51 The Run
Smoke flooded the evacuation corridors as red emergency lights pulsed violently overhead. Staff and patients rushed blindly toward the exits, shoving and screaming, panic spreading faster than any instructions could contain. People tripped over each other in the narrow hallways, crying out for family members, for help, for air.

I pushed through the crowd with Soren right beside me, elbowing past terrified doctors and nurses who didn’t even look at who they were shoving aside. My cracked ribs screamed with every step. The hunter suit felt suffocating, soaked with sweat and dust, clinging to my skin like a second, heavier body. Behind us, the unstable energy from Lucien’s presence still raged through the facility like a storm I couldn’t outrun.

The building groaned under mounting structural stress, deep metallic sounds echoing through the walls as support beams twisted and concrete shifted dangerously overhead.

“Keep moving!” Soren shouted over the chaos, his hand gripping my arm tightly to keep me steady. “The evacuation tunnel is just ahead. We can still make it out before the self-destruct hits critical!”

“I’m trying,” I gasped, shoving past a group of panicked technicians who were clawing at a jammed door. “But it’s getting harder. The Core… it’s still awake. I can feel it pushing. Like it doesn’t want me to leave. Like it wants to stay and fight.”

Every step drained me. My legs felt heavier with each stride. My vision kept blurring at the edges. The system interface flashed warnings in my sight, each one sharper and more urgent than the last.

“I don’t know how much longer I can keep going,” I said, voice breaking as I stumbled over a fallen gurney blocking the hallway. “It feels like I’m tearing apart from the inside. Every time I push forward, it pulls back harder. Like it’s punishing me for running.”

Soren didn’t slow down. He kept us moving through the panicked crowd, his voice steady but urgent. “You have to. If we stop now, Lucien catches up. If we stop now, everyone still inside this building dies because of us. Keep moving, Elias. For them. For the people you just saved. Don’t let Lucien win.”

A group of nurses ahead of us screamed as part of the ceiling cracked loudly above them. A massive steel beam snapped loose from its supports and plummeted straight down toward the trapped women.

Without thinking, I raised my hand.

The falling beam froze midair.

It hung there, suspended inches above the nurses’ heads, trembling slightly as if fighting against my will. The women stared up at it in frozen terror, then scrambled away on hands and knees, sobbing with relief as they crawled to safety.

Soren looked at me, eyes wide with a mix of awe and concern. “Elias… you did it again. You saved them.”

I kept my hand raised, arm shaking violently from the effort. The pressure in my chest exploded again, the Core roaring with satisfaction at being used. More debris began lifting from the floor around us, swirling in chaotic circles as the power leaked out uncontrollably.

“I didn’t mean to,” I whispered, tears cutting through the dust on my face. “It just… happened. I couldn’t let them die. I couldn’t watch it happen again. Not after everything.”

The system warnings flashed faster and brighter in my vision.

Soren pulled me forward again, his voice urgent as we continued running. “You did good. You saved them. But we can’t stop. Not yet. The tunnel is close. Just keep pushing.”

I lowered my hand slowly. The beam crashed down behind us with a thunderous boom that shook the floor. The crowd screamed and pushed harder toward the exits. I felt every step draining more of me, like the Core was sucking away pieces of my strength with every breath I took.

“I’m so tired,” I gasped, leaning heavier on Soren as we forced our way through the panicked crowd. “It feels like I’m disappearing. Like every time I use this power, less of me comes back. I don’t know how much longer I can hold on.”

Soren kept us moving, navigating through the sea of terrified people. “Then hold on to what’s left of you. That’s all that matters right now. We’re almost at the tunnel. Just a little further. You can do this, Elias.”

Behind us, I could still feel Lucien’s presence following, calm, patient, unhurried. The ancient thing inside me responded to him like it was calling home, whispering that running was pointless.

The system kept flashing, colder and more insistent with every passing second.

I pushed forward through the smoke and fear, knowing that every step I took was costing me something I might never get back.

And the worst part was the small, broken voice inside me that whispered:

\[Maybe losing yourself is the only way to save them.\]
