Chapter 77 He's My Real Father, Isn't He?
“Mr. Matheus, there are police officers here. They’re looking for you,” a site foreman said, slightly out of breath, his eyes cautious.
“Looking for me?” Christian handed his hard hat to Lorne. He had been planning to head to Lucas’s kindergarten after this. Even though Ariana had firmly forbidden it, he had already promised himself he would build a good relationship with his son. This minor interruption made the faint smile on his lips disappear.
From a distance, he saw two officers in blue uniforms striding toward him.
“Christian Matheus? We’re from Polmont Police Station,” one of them said, his voice formal and firm. “You're under arrest on charges of disturbing the peace and engaging in inappropriate conduct at Mrs. MacRae’s residence.”
“Ariana reported me? Ha, she really is cruel.” Christian’s jaw tightened into a stiff smile. He glanced at the handcuffs being placed on him, a sharp glint flashing in his eyes.
In the distance, villagers quickly gathered to watch, including Mrs. Campbell.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Campbell turned on her heel and headed toward Ariana’s stone house. “Should Maisie know about this?” she murmured.
Before Christian was fully inside the police car, Lorne spoke, “Sir, I’ll arrange your release as soon as possible.”
“Yes. You know I can’t stay away from my wife, right?” Christian replied, his gaze sharpening at Lorne.
“Of course.” Lorne lowered his head slightly. “Please don’t worry. This won’t take long.”
“Please get into the car.”
“He really was taken away,” the older woman said, pointing at the police car speeding off. “He must be in there.”
Inside the house, Ariana’s previously tense expression had turned bright with relief. Her blue eyes reflected the aged face of Mrs. Campbell.
“I’m the one who reported him.”
“You? I thought the two of you knew each other,” Mrs. Campbell replied, clearly surprised.
A faint smile curved Ariana’s lips. “Would you like to come inside first?” she asked, then glanced at the incoming call from the police station. “It looks like I need to go there.”
After giving a brief statement at the local police station to strengthen the case against Christian, Ariana immediately asked Bonnie to take her to visit David at St Leonards.
When she entered the visitation room, she almost didn't recognize the man behind the glass partition.
“David, why do you look so much thinner? Your face,” Ariana trailed off, her tongue going still at the sight of him bruised and battered, purple marks beneath his eyes, the corner of his lip split. “Were you beaten by other inmates here?”
“Yes. You know who did this to me, Ariana.” David did not even try to hide his hatred for Christian.
“What can I do to help you get out of here?”
David smiled, warmth returning to his expression. “You don’t need to do anything. I’ll be out soon.”
“Really? Have you been proven innocent?” Ariana asked quickly, pressing her palm eagerly against the glass.
David fell silent for a moment. He turned his face away, avoiding her probing gaze.
“I can’t answer that right now. But can you promise me one thing?” he looked back at her. “Don’t go back to Christian Matheus. You’ll only be hurt more if you find out what really happened.”
“I won’t go back to that him.”
“Good. Wait for me to come home. We’ll start over,” David said, his eyes lighting up again.
Ariana let out a long breath. She looked at him deeply, guilt pressing heavily against her chest.
“I’m sorry, David. When you get out, I might not even be in this country anymore.”
“What do you mean? You really intend to leave all our memories behind?” David stiffened in shock.
Ariana shook her head quickly. “No, that’s not it. Christian is in prison because of my report. His people’s surveillance on me has weakened. I have to take Lucas to the airport today.” Her voice was hoarse, soft but clear. “I can’t let him take Lucas, even if he says he’s dropped the claim. I don’t trust him.”
David’s face flushed red instantly. He stood up abruptly, the wooden chair behind him crashing to the floor. His eyes burned with anger as Ariana looked up at him in surprise.
“Only I can protect you!”
His booming voice drew two guards over immediately. They grabbed his shoulders, forcing him back, then quickly cuffed his hands.
“Visiting time is over! The inmate must return to his cell!” one officer ordered firmly.
“Wait for me! Did you hear that, Ariana?” David kept shouting as he was dragged away from the visitation room.
Ariana bit down hard on her lower lip. “I’m sorry, David. Forgive me, but I really can’t wait for you. This's my last chance.”
She stood, then walked out of the station, her steps unsteady. As soon as she got into Bonnie’s car, she was met with her friend’s worried gaze.
“Are you sure about your decision?” Bonnie asked, gripping the steering wheel.
“Yes. Please take us to the airport now.”
A small voice from the back seat suddenly broke the silence. Lucas looked at his mother, his gray eyes filled with confusion. “Are we really going on vacation without Daddy, Mom? What about my school?”
Two hours later, they arrived at Glasgow Airport, disguised with hats and face masks. A cold breeze drifted through the departure area as Ariana hugged Bonnie tightly.
“I’m very lucky to have met you and Mr. Robert,” Ariana said softly.
“If you need anything, don’t hesitate to contact us,” Bonnie replied.
“No. My ex husband would bother both of you if I did.” Ariana smiled gently, then waved. “Say goodbye to Bonnie and Toby, Lucas.”
“Goodbye. Take care,” Lucas repeated quietly.
Bonnie held back Toby, who cried loudly, trying to run after Lucas as Ariana led him toward the security gate.
“Lucas, I wanna go with Lucas, Mom!”
“We can’t. They’re going very far away, Toby.”
Inside the plane, the atmosphere felt heavy with silence. Lucas had been staring out the window for a while before suddenly asking, “Mom, are we leaving because you’re afraid my biological father will take me?”
Ariana flinched, her eyes widening. “Who told you that, Lucas?”
“No one. I just noticed that Daddy David isn’t my biological father. Our eye colors don’t match,” the boy replied innocently.
Ariana struggled to find her words. “You must have seen it wrong,” she said, avoiding his gaze.
“You can’t lie to me anymore. Mr. Matheus is my biological father, right?” Lucas asked again, this time looking straight into his mother’s eyes.
Meanwhile, at a small police station, Sean had just finished the paperwork to secure Christian’s release. Lorne stood beside the car, watching as Christian stepped out with a cold expression and a deeply intimidating aura.
“We’re going to my wife’s house, Lorne,” Christian ordered without room for argument.
As he reached for the car door, he suddenly stopped. He looked at Lorne, who seemed uneasy, unable to meet his eyes.
“Lorne? Is there something you want to tell me?” Christian asked, his deep baritone demanding an answer.
“Yes, sir.” Lorne swallowed. “Mrs. Ariana has just taken Young Master Lucas away. They’ve already left Scotland.”
