Chapter 31: TWO HEARTS SHATTERED.

Chapter 31: TWO HEARTS SHATTERED.
Jenna’s breath caught in her throat. The sight of the man before her was like ice slashing through her veins.

Her eyes gleamed with malicious delight at her fear.

“Well, well,” he sneered, stepping closer. “I didn’t expect to find you here. How lucky for me.”

Her mind screamed at her to move, to run, to do anything but stand there frozen. But her body betrayed her, locked in terror. Her pulse thundered so loudly she was sure he could hear it.

The officers nearby turned, startled by the intrusion, but the criminal moved faster. With a flash of steel, he pulled a weapon from his jacket, waving it at anyone who dared approach.

“Back off!” he roared, his voice cutting through the chaos of the station. “This girl belongs to me.”

Jenna’s knees trembled. This can’t be real. Not here. Not in front of the police. Yet the danger was undeniable. The nightmare she thought she’d left outside had walked straight into her refuge.

Darius, miles away, paced restlessly in the hospital corridor. His thoughts spiraled around Betty, her fragile future, her forced marriage, the weight of losing her. He didn’t notice Jenna’s absence at first. When he finally did, a hollow ache spread inside him, though he silenced it quickly.

She’ll be fine. She’s strong, he told himself. But another voice whispered something darker: Or maybe she’s gone because of you. Because you couldn’t keep your heart steady.

Still, his mind returned to Betty. The guilt of it gnawed at him, though he tried to bury it deep.

At the police station, panic erupted. Officers scrambled for cover, their hands hovering near their holsters. No one wanted to risk Jenna’s life by making the wrong move.

“Let her go,” one officer demanded, his tone steady but tense.

The criminal only laughed. “Oh no. She’s the reason I’m here. You think you can protect her? You couldn’t even protect your own hospital from me.”

The words sliced through Jenna. She remembered the blood on the floors, the screams echoing through sterile halls, the lives stolen because of her.

Her chest ached with guilt. This is my fault. All of it. If I hadn’t been the target, none of those people would have died.

Her tears welled, but she refused to let them fall. She clenched her fists, summoning whatever courage she had left.

“I won’t go with you,” she whispered, her voice small but defiant.

The man’s grin widened. “Brave words. Let’s see how long they last.” He grabbed her arm roughly, yanking her toward the door.

But the officers closed in, forming a tense circle. One wrong move, and bullets would fly.

Back at the hospital, Darius’s phone finally buzzed. He hesitated before checking it, expecting another update about Betty. But instead, the notification froze his heart.

A message from the police.
Jenna.
In danger.

The words blurred before his eyes. For the first time in hours, his thoughts shifted away from Betty. A sharp pang of regret stabbed through him.

Jenna. She left because of me. Because I made her feel unwanted. And now she’s facing this alone.

Without another second wasted, he ran.

At the station, Jenna struggled against the criminal’s grip. The officers shouted commands, trying to corner him without provoking violence.

“You don’t understand!” he barked. “She’s the key. Without her, none of this makes sense. You think I’d waste my time otherwise?”

His voice was laced with desperation, madness even, as though Jenna wasn’t just a victim but some crucial piece of a larger plan.

Jenna’s heart pounded. Why me? Why do they keep saying that?

She thought of her father still in the clutches of kidnappers. Was this connected? Was she just a pawn in some twisted game to break her family apart?

Summoning all her strength, she twisted her wrist, trying to break free. Pain shot through her arm, but she didn’t stop.

The criminal cursed, tightening his grip.

At that moment, the police lunged.

Shots rang out, deafening in the confined space. Screams echoed as chaos erupted. Jenna dropped to the floor, her body trembling, ears ringing from the blast.

When she lifted her head, she saw the criminal sprawled across the tiles, groaning, his weapon skittered away.

Officers swarmed him, pinning him down in seconds. The danger was over.

But Jenna wasn’t relieved. Her body shook uncontrollably, her mind still trapped in terror.

Minutes later, Darius burst through the station doors, his chest heaving, sweat dripping down his temple. His eyes darted wildly until they found her.

“Jenna!”

She turned at the sound of his voice. For a fleeting second, her heart lifted as he had come. But just as quickly, pain replaced it.

Why now? Why only when I’m nearly killed?

Darius rushed to her, kneeling at her side. “Are you hurt? Tell me you’re okay.”

His eyes searched hers, desperate, almost pleading. But she couldn’t bring herself to answer.

Her silence cut him deeper than any words.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered, his voice cracking. “I should have been here. I should never have let you walk away.”

Jenna’s chest tightened. She wanted to believe him, wanted to forgive. But the memory of him calling Betty my love still burned like fire in her veins.

“You weren’t worried about me,” she said finally, her voice raw. “You were worried about her. About Betty.”

Darius froze, guilt washing over him like a tide. He opened his mouth, then closed it again. No excuse could undo the truth.

Jenna stood, wiping her tears. She faced him with new strength, though her voice quivered.

“For once, my request was granted. The police listened. They fought for me. Not you.”

Her words hung heavy in the air.

Darius reached for her hand, but she pulled back. For the first time, she saw him not as her protector, but as a man divided torn between two hearts, too fragile to choose.

And in that realization, Jenna found something she hadn’t felt in a long time: clarity.

She turned to the officers. “Please,” she said firmly. “Help me find my father.”

They nodded, already preparing their team.

Darius stood silently, his face pale, his hands trembling.

Jenna walked past him, her steps steady now. The night had nearly swallowed her whole, but she was still standing. She wasn’t waiting for Darius to save her anymore.

This time, she woul
d fight for her father, for herself, for the life she deserved.

And whether Darius followed or not no longer mattered.
