Chapter 24: MAKING LOVE AFTER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME.
Chapter 24: MAKING LOVE AFTER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME.
“What is going on?” Darius asked again, his voice heavier this time, his eyes fixed on me with a seriousness that made my heart pound faster. He had asked once already, but now the weight of his tone told me he wasn’t going to let this go easily. His gaze was sharp, yet there was a softness behind it.
I swallowed hard, not knowing how to explain the storm raging inside me. If I told him everything, he might lose his mind. I didn’t want to ruin his night or his spirit. He had been through so much already. But how can we ever move forward if I keep holding things back? The question echoed in my mind like a whisper I couldn’t silence.
“Okay, Darius,” I said at last, forcing a small smile. “It’s already late. Tomorrow morning… we’ll talk. Please, not tonight.” My words came out gently, almost pleading.
He stared at me for a long moment, as though trying to read between the lines, trying to catch the truth in my eyes. Then, finally, he sighed. “O-okay… I just pray it’s nothing serious.” His shoulders relaxed a little as he lay back against the pillows.
Relief slipped over me, though it was thin and temporary. Thank goodness, he listened, I thought, breathing out slowly. But tomorrow would come, and I would still need to find the courage to say what needed to be said. Tonight, though, I just wanted him close.
Still, one question burned in my chest. Why had the doctor not discharged him yet?
I turned back to him. “Darius, baby?” I called softly, using the name I knew made him feel strong, wanted.
“Yes?” His eyes flicked to mine with curiosity. “You want to tell me now?”
My heart clenched. He was still expecting answers. I shook my head gently. “No… it’s something else. Are you free to talk?”
A faint smile tugged at his lips. “Of course. What’s on your mind?”
“Okay…” I hesitated, then asked, “What’s holding the doctor from discharging us?”
His face shifted. The strength in his expression faltered, replaced with something weaker, almost reluctant.
“Is everything fine?” I pressed again, afraid of what he wasn’t saying.
“Yeah,” he said, though his tone lacked confidence. “I’m good. But I just have to stay here for the next few days. Maybe a week. Honestly, I don’t know.”
My chest tightened, but I tried to stay calm. “Alright. I’ll meet with the doctor in the morning. I need to understand exactly why. We can’t just stay here without answers.”
He nodded faintly, and silence crept in. The room suddenly felt colder, the air heavy. I pulled the blanket over my arms, but it wasn’t just the temperature it was the emptiness. My body felt restless, my spirit unsettled.
My thoughts began to wander, drifting into the kind of silence that made my skin ache for warmth. Not just physical warmth, but the kind only he could give me. It had been too long since I felt him that way. Too long since we had been more than patient and worried spouses in a hospital room.
I looked at him lying there. My husband. My love. The man who carried my heart, even when I feared losing pieces of him. He looked tired, yes, but still so handsome it hurt. My insecurities whispered cruel thoughts: What if he doesn’t want me anymore? What if someone else has taken the space I used to fill?
But then another thought came. What if I can still remind him? What if I can still make him want me, make him see me the way he used to?
I slid closer to him, resting my head against his chest. His heartbeat was steady, grounding. He closed his eyes, but I couldn’t resist. I covered them playfully with my fingertips, my other hand tracing light circles across his stomach.
Doubt and longing wrestled in me. Can I win him back tonight? Can I bring him closer? Or will he turn away?
His eyes opened again, wide this time, and before I could overthink, he leaned close to my ear. His voice came out low, almost like a secret. “I’m horny for you.”
The words struck me like lightning. For a moment, I froze, stunned. Then a rush of warmth and relief coursed through me. He wanted me. Even here, even now, he still wanted me.
I stood and quietly locked the door, my heart racing faster. Returning to him, I leaned close and whispered back, “I’m horny too.”
Our eyes met, and something shifted in the air. It wasn’t just lust; it was hunger mixed with longing, need wrapped in love.
I leaned in to kiss him softly at first, unsure, testing. But the moment our lips touched, the kiss deepened, grew hungrier, more urgent. His hands reached for me, pulling me close as though he had been waiting forever. My body melted into his, and the cold of the room vanished.
Every touch became a reminder of us of who we were before the fear, before the silence. His fingers trailed across my back, sending sparks through me. My hands tangled in his hair, anchoring myself to him.
We kissed until my chest ached for air, until the silence of the hospital room was replaced by the sound of our breathing. His lips wandered down my neck, gentle yet full of fire, and I shivered, my heart racing.
For the first time in a long while, I felt truly seen. Desired. Loved.
We didn’t rush. There was no need. Every caress, every sigh, was like rediscovering each other. His eyes, when they met mine again, carried something deeper than desire; it was recognition. It was love that hadn’t died, even when everything around us tried to bury it.
I closed my eyes and surrendered, letting the moment swallow me whole. It wasn’t only about satisfying needs, it was about healing, reconnecting, proving that we were still us. That nothing, not even fear, could strip away what we had built.
Time blurred. The hospital bed, the white walls, the cold air all of it disappeared. There was only us, tangled in each other, speaking in whispers and sighs, reminding one another of the fire we carried.
The night stretched before us, and though time was moving, we didn’t feel it. Every kiss, every touch, slowed the world down until nothing else mattered. I could almost forget we were in a hospital room. It felt as though we were in our own private universe, one stitched together by love and longing.
When his lips left mine to explore the curve of my cheek, my throat, my shoulders, I trembled. His touch wasn’t hurried, it was deliberate, almost reverent. As if he was reminding himself of every inch of me, reacquainting himself with what he already knew but had missed.
“Betty…” he whispered my name like it was a prayer. The sound of it on his lips lit something deep inside me. I leaned into him, letting the warmth of his body dissolve the insecurities that had plagued me earlier. For once, I wasn’t thinking about tomorrow, or the doctor, or even the truth I still had to confess. I was only thinking about him.
I wanted him to feel strong again, to feel like the man he was before this hospital bed. I wanted him to know I still saw him that way, my husband, my lover, the one who had always carried me even when I didn’t deserve it.
He cupped my face gently, pulling me back to look into his eyes. They were heavy with emotion, with hunger, but also with something tender. “You’re beautiful,” he said simply.
The words broke me in the best way. My throat tightened, and my eyes burned with tears I hadn’t expected. “And you’re mine,” I whispered back, pressing my forehead to his.
His laugh was soft, but there was relief in it too. Relief that we were here, together, still able to say those things despite everything.
We moved slowly, carefully, savoring each moment. Every time his hand brushed against my skin, it felt like electricity. Every time my fingers traced over him, it was like we were writing a story with touch instead of words.
I thought about all the nights we had missed. The nights where fear and distance had crept between us, stealing the intimacy we once shared so freely. Tonight was our way of taking it back. Tonight, we were saying: No matter what happens, this is who we are.
He shifted, and I followed, our bodies molding together as if they had been made for this exact moment. Our breathing grew heavier, the rhythm syncing until it felt like one heartbeat was guiding us both. The hospital bed creaked softly under our movements, but even that became part of the music of the night.
There were moments when I thought I might cry not from sadness, but from the overwhelming rush of love. It was passion, yes, but it was also healing. Every embrace was like stitching back a wound I hadn’t realized was still bleeding.
At one point, I whispered in his ear, “I’ve missed you so much.”
He kissed me harder, as though those words struck him deeply. “I’m here now,” he murmured. “I’m not going anywhere.”
The way he said it, with such certainty, melted me completely. For the first time in weeks, maybe months, I believed it.
The minutes blurred into hours. We lost count of how many times we kissed, how many times we whispered to each other, how many times we clung tighter when exhaustion threatened to pull us apart. The night belonged to us, and we used every second of it.
Finally, when our bodies grew too weak to continue, we collapsed together, tangled in each other’s arms. The blanket slipped somewhere to the side, but neither of us cared. His skin against mine was enough warmth.
I rested my head against his chest, listening to his heartbeat. It was a steady, strong rhythm that lulled me into peace. His fingers stroked my hair gently, almost absentmindedly, but it made me feel safe in a way nothing else could.
“I love you,” he whispered, his voice heavy with sleep but full of conviction.
Tears pricked at my eyes again, though this time they were soft, easy tears. “I love you too, Darius. More than you’ll ever know.”
We lay there in silence after that, but it wasn’t the heavy, cold silence from earlier. This silence was different: it was warm, alive, a silence that spoke louder than words ever could.
My mind drifted to tomorrow, to the conversation I still owed him. Fear lingered at the edges of my thoughts, reminding me that nothing was truly resolved yet. But for tonight, I let it go. Tonight wasn’t about secrets or worries. Tonight was about us.
Eventually, sleep began to pull at me, but I resisted for as long as I could, wanting to memorize the way he felt in my arms, the sound of his breathing, the comfort of his warmth. It had been too long since I felt this complete.
As my eyes finally closed, I thought: No matter what happens tomorrow, at least we had tonight.
And with that thought, I slipped into sleep, wrapped in the
love we had rekindled, certain that even in the most uncertain of times, our fire could still burn bright.
